Covington visits Bolivar this week. The Covington paper says that a win here will clinch the Region 7-3A championship for the Chargers. Bolivar is 1-6 overall and 0-3 in the Region. I suspect that the Chargers will be heavy favorites in this one.

Any thoughts on Bolivar? Why do they have such a problem being competitive in football?

Coaching. Coaching. Coaching.

If, you want to have a program you must hire a great coach that will put his kids in a place to win. Bolivar has been dysfunctional for a long time. They hired a good coach in Wilson a few years ago. They were competitive and won. After that, trash. I hate to see it. Bolivar has the talent to be competitive and win.... Just a total lack of organizational leadership and coaching.

That is all.

I wondered what their issue might be.

Of course, the community plays a part here. Covington has always had parents and boosters involved to encourage the coaches and players. Back in the 1990’s there was a Quarterback Club. Now the Covington Gridiron Association is active with fundraisers, boosters who donate team meals, etc.

One other aspect is having Middle School programs that play good football and feed players into the high school.

    • It's time to play everybody's favorite game of how is this season going to go. I'll undertake the fool's errand of a prediction. Encourage the region 2 fans to do the same. Cloudland: Top until they get beat always seem to perform year in year out with a small changing roster. Cosby, North Greene: These two could finish in either order they didn't have big senior classes. Lots of young guys got experience last season and most of their best athletes are upperclassmen it'll depend on coaching and if the kids can put it all together.  Jellico, Unaka: Like the two above could finish in either spot both of them lost key pieces to graduation. It'll depend on how returners play and if young guys can fill shoes.  Hancock: Small roster size devastated by a big senior class that took a lot of the experience and athleticism with them.
    • Confident that Marion, Moore, and Gordonsville are losses.  7-3 would be a nice turnaround.  5-5, 4-6, 3-7, etc. and it's a disappointment
    • Win the Watertown game, you can start 4-0. Lose it and you might be anywhere from 0-4 to 3-1.
