The Eaglettes won over Padaia (Ga.) by something like 65-28 in the opening round of the Deep South Classic. They play Newnan (Ga.) tonight at 6 p.m. and will play again Saturday night at 6 p.m. in the semifinals if they win that one. The championship game is Monday at noon.

If I am not mistaken, the Lawrence County and Riverdale girls also won their opening games in the Deep South Classic. Should both win today, Lawrence County will likely play nationally-ranked Narbonne (Ca.) and Riverdale will likely face Shelbyville in the semifinals on Saturday.

Tennessee High and Summertown girls are also in the Deep South Classic, but both lost their openers on Thursday.

Shelbyville and Riverdale will play in the semis if Riverdale can get by a scrappy Wesleyan team. They won the GA 1A crown the last two years with a player that is now a junior, Nikki Luckhusrt. Her sister, a sophomore also plays. Their father was a former Falcons kicker. Very good athletes.

The prior message mentioned that Lawrence Co. would play Narbonne, CA in the semis if they win. It failed to mention they have to beat Cleveland, TN to get there. That should be exciting.

No TN boys team has ever done well in this tournament. TN girls on the other hand have done well. Upperman was an upset winner last year over Collins Hill (a school with nearly 3,600 kids) who wound up winning the 5A title in GA for the second year in a row. Lawrence Co. beat Shelbyville in the 2000 finals. McMinn Co. was the runner-up in 1999. Shelbyville won it in 1996. Powell was the runner-up in 1992.

Go TN girls teams. Let's see two TN teams in the finals again.
