HELP! Tip-off question to a coach or ref

I think if both players touch the ball and one of the Center's end up with it. I don't think it matters. But if only one of the Center's tip it to themselves or go up and grab it, its not legal.

Not sure, though?

Thanks! It really looked strange the way in happened and the ref blew the play dead and awarded the ball to the team that controlled it anyway. I don't remember if both guys touched the ball or not. I'm not being critical. I just didn't know what the ruling should be.

What is the official ruling on an opening tip-off as far as controlling the ball. I was recently at a game where one of the players tipping off came down with possession of the ball. It did hit the floor first if that makes any difference.

The correct ruling on this play is that either or both players that jump center cannot touch the ball more than twice. However, if either or BOTH players touch the ball & it hits the floor, any of the players (10), including the jumpers may control the ball & be legal. That team then is credited with posession of the ball for determining the direction for the alternating posession.

This rule has not changed in the last 30 years.
