Jon Sioredas, the UTC assistant wrestling coach the past two years, has been hired as the new head wrestling coach at Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, Ariz.

Sioredas takes over a program which is in the second of a four-year transition period to NCAA D-I status.

“My goal has been to be a head wrestling coach at the college level and I am excited to be the new head coach at Grand Canyon University,†said Sioredas who was a high school All-American and national champion at Great Bridge HS (Va.) before wrestling for the Mocs.

While in transition to NCAA D-I from D-II, the Anteaters wrestling program competes in the National Collegiate Wrestling Association (collegiate club program) and won both the national duals and national traditional championships this past season.

“This is a great opportunity for me as Grand Canyon is a for profit institution with all 22 varsity teams fully funded," Sioredas stated. "Wrestling has the full allotment of 9.9 scholarships, state-of-the-art facilities and great travel and operating budgets.â€

The Chesapeake, Va .native was the 2005 Southern Conference Wrestler of the Year at UTC and an NCAA All-American placing fifth at the national tournament.

“We hate to lose Jon, but this is a great opportunity for him and we wish him the best,†said UTC coach Heath Eslinger who plans to hire an assistant to replace Sioredas as soon as possible.

“Jon did everything we asked him to do and more. He believed in what we did and was fully invested in our program.â€

    • TSSAA restrictions for hiring non-faculty coaches have been removed for over a year at this point. In the past a non-faculty person had to be "grandfathered" by being an assistant coach for five years, being fingerprinted, and having a background check run per TSSAA rules... since those were rescinded, the board of directors for the school district are responsible for any/all restrictions on hiring non-faculty personnel. I guess what I'm saying to you is that if you really wanted what you posted, it's already possible as long as your local BOE will allow for it.
