We're so fine at WR that we waited until the end of the game to use them?

I understand our OCs game plan. However, grinding down the opponent can backfire when the offense gets into a negative rythum because of untimely penalties, which is what happened to us on more then one occasion. Ergo the 2 minute drill drive. Which is even more impressive because the HC had been evicted. That was a good test to overcome.

How about Trezevant, MUS, & CBHS ... all winning their games. MUS held South Panola scoreless. Trezevant beating a 6A school. A big kudos to all three of those schools. That's representing right there!

And still won the game....we not gone blow everybody out...we are gone get the best of everyone...they may get blown out by other teams but they will play championship ball against us. We needed that game just to see how much fight we actually have in us. In spite of the refs and coach, and dr. Hunter bein put off the sidelines they stayed together and finished with a win....5-0 baby... houston up next at home....let's go!!!!

Agreed. We are 5-0 going into the Houston game. We play at home. We won the previous game despite the adversity. It's good to see we stayed poised when chaos could have taken over. That is a championship quality to have. When asked to make plays. Those young men responded. Those are character builders. Let's go Whitehaven!

Certainly these were 3 great wins for these 3 schools.  However, all of their opponents are not as good as last year.  USP is at a perhaps unprecedented down, certainly in recent history.  Can't believe LaSalle will remain a top 10 team in Ohio.  No elite team should go 0-3 on PATS.  The lack of a kicking game changed their approach late in the game and forced them to gamble.  CBHS took full advantage of it.

 

This year MUS is very good, especially on defense,  but they are not an elite team, because their offense is too one dimensional (no consistent rushing) and their receivers drop too many on the money passes.  CBHS has an excellent dual threat QB in Voss.  Their pass defense is suspect.  Both teams have excellent kicking games. Should be an interesting match up in late October.   Unfortunately MUS may have lost their linebacker "anchor" on defense.  He went out with an apparent more than casual knee injury in the 2nd half of the USP game.  Big loss if that is the case.

PLAYERS OF THE WEEK FOR WEEK 5 (Commercial Appeal)

 

OFFENSE

 

DeAndre Bobo, Mitchell senior: Bobo only touched the ball nine times last Friday but certainly got his money’s worth, scoring four touchdowns as the Tigers defeated Lewisburg 49-30. The 5-10, 180-pounder had scoring catches of 45 and 22 yards, had TD runs of 15 and 9 and added a 2-point conversion run as Mitchell improved to 2-3 heading into Friday’s game against Douglass at Whitehaven.

 

DEFENSE

 

Desmond Clayton, Trezevant freshman: Despite a listed size of 5-7 and 165 pounds, Clayton wreaked havoc for the Bears in last Friday’s 36-14 victory at DeSoto Central. He had fivesacks as the defending 2A state champion Bears improved to 3-2.

 

Maurice Hampton Jr., MUS sophomore: MUS held South Panola to 62 total yards in a 29-0 victory led by Hampton, who has already committed to play football and baseball at LSU. He returned a fumble 23 yards for a touchdown — his third defensive TD of the year — and intercepted two passes while breaking up another as the Tigers failed to complete a pass.

 

SPECIAL TEAMS

 

Blake Armour, Brighton senior: The linebacker was unblockable in a 31-29 victory over Kirby, blocking four punts as well as a crucial extra-point attempt as the Cardinals improved to 4-1.

 

Trey Thomas, MUS sophomore: Thomas set the MUS and Shelby County game record with five field goals against South Panola, connecting from 26, 33, 36, 21 and 36 yards. With five regular-season games to go, he’s tied the mark of 13 set by Collierville’s Corbin Peeper in 2013 and has a great shot to surpass the season mark of 17 by Ridgeway’s Josh Jasper in 2005.
