  1. Can anyone tell me anything about Paul Raper from Madison? He was injured v. Jackson Southside and was taken to Vanderbilt with a back injury.
  2. It is amazing isn't it? I would have a very hard time ever betting against a Steve Patterson coached team.
  3. 18-11 Madison. End of 1st Quarter.
  4. Outside of the BCS conferences in football, very few football programs make money. Most, in fact, lose thousands. I recently read that about 90% of all college (all levels, divisions) football programs lose money. Some will argue, however, that these schools don't lose money on football, because it serves as advertising and will help to bring students in.
  5. Coach Paul Conway from Lambuth said it was a great event. He said it was very sad for the Western coach, teams, and he even mention that the coach's wife had really worked hard to make it the event that it was ( and had even spear-headed a fundraising effort to help "save" the program). Paulie also mentioned that most players are looking to transfer, though I can't imagine all upperclassmen wanting to sacrifice credit hours in order to play again. I hope all those guys can find a soccer home.
  6. [quote name= But first of all, how about spending a little time watching big time matches and learn what a foul looks like. That would be a big help. I think even watching NAIA and Div. III NCAA matches would help. As it is now, I see fouls called when any kind of contact is made.
  7. I saw where they have won a couple already. I hope they continue to improve, it's good for soccer here in West TN. Just to clarify, and I will drop it. I am not saying the word Celtic is not pronounced with a K (i.e. 'Keltic people') I am just saying the name of the club is pronounced with an S. I respect (and agree with) your professor's contention that the proper pronunciation when refering to the Celtic people, languages, culture, etc. is KELTIC. Thanks, sorry for this diatribe. Go Skyhawks!
  8. I did youth games when I was 15 and 16 years old. Needless to say, I will NEVER ref again. It was instant "skin thickener" for a teenager.
  9. I think the biggest problem with referees is that most have not played the game ( or even watched-other than the games they call). They simply do not understand the "flow" of a game. There are several here in West TN who call it strictly "by the book". By doing this they create far too many stoppages in play that are adverse on the continuity of the match. That being said, the two man system is not a good one. Offsides is missed a number of times that is beyond exceptable. Also, I see far too many calls made by officials from 50 yards away (Across the field). Better referee education is needed as to what constitutes a true foul. Until there are a sufficient number of referees, these are problems that we will have to live with using the duel-system.
  10. It is CELTIC Football Club- It's a proper name and at the time the club was named the accepted pronunciation of Celtic was with an S. That had been the proper pronunciation since the Middle Ages. The pronunciation changed sometime during the middle 20th century to reflect the original Greek (yes, Greek) way. It doesn't matter that the proper pronunciation of the word is Celtic (with a K). It is a proper name just as Boston Celtics is (Ever heard that pronunced with a K?). I am sure if you walked into a pub in Glasgow, proclaiming yourself to be a Keltic supporter, you would be met with some untrusting looks. Anyway, I am sorry for derailing this thread. The women's match was superb. It's hard to believe that Lilly is still playing at such a high level. Great result. By the way, Gerry Bertier, are you in school at Martin? If you are, do you get out to see UTM's women play?
  11. Did they pronounce it with a "K" sound like "Keltic" or with an "S" like "Seltic"? If they pronounced it like "Seltic", they are pronouncing it correctly.
