  1. FWIW.... http:/ / highschool. rivals. com/ viewrankhs.asp?ra_key=751 Alcoa 72 Maryville 97 Only ranked teams from the Volunteer State!
  2. Dang your absolutely right. Thanks for pointing that out, I knew I shouldn't have tried to think about anything that late at night. To correct myself, I believe OR would have given Smyrna a very good game. I was just thinking about DY and how he was such an electrifying player and I was afraid that Smyrnas RB was similar to him in that aspect and he was not. My bad, thanks for pointing out my mistake.
  3. Dude- I never said that they wouldn't. Every time DY of OR touched the ball I held my breath. The young man was a very special HS athlete. He ranks in the top 5 I've seen play in person (and I've seen many D1 athletes play HS ball) Also, Smyrnas RB runs to the right, Marvylle players attack the football and its not a safety, he goes to the left, Maryville players attack the football and it is. Maryville got lucky imo. I apologize, the rest of that comment I do not understand. Either way, with DY on the team I believe OR would have beaten Smyrna this year. IDK about past yrs or next year but this year, with DY on the team, they were very impressive.
  4. Read a lot, but didn't want to say much because I've never seen Smyrna play. First, this is my opinion of the game. There has been a lot of "bashing" going on on both sides (many of who were neither Maryville nor Smyrna fans) and this is not intended to "bash" anyone. Both teams played a really exciting game. I tried watching some of the other games and for the most part it was pretty one sided and boring. Big thanks to both sides for putting on a hard fought show. While not winning the big game seems like a big disappointment, MOST teams in TN would have taken 2nd place in a heart beat. No shame is getting close. Smyrna has a lot to be proud of. As for the game. For Maryville, this was not a pretty win but we'll take it any time. We are usually a pretty balanced team but (to my surprise) Maryville was able to move the ball on the ground pretty good. This is not the best team we have played this year. I believe OR and Alcoa were a lot better. Smyrna has some BIG boys playing on the line and they did a very good job opening up holes for the RB who btw is a good athlete. Neither team could stop each other in the first half. Both ran the ball well and the passing attack was very limited due to such success running the ball. Towards halftime, with about 90sec left or so, I had a good feeling that Maryville was going to get a pick. Smyrna got too greedy (understandably so) and tried to get some points before the half and that was the best opportunity for Maryville to cause a turnover because Smyrnas passing game is not that good imo and it would have been very difficult to cause a turnover the way their RB was running the ball. Those 7 points before the half were extremely important to Maryville, I thought that once Maryville came out after the half that the game would be over very soon because they were just too much for Smyrna to handle due to the fact that they were running the QB option so well and our QB is one of the best in the state, not just running the ball but also passing. Stop his running game and he will beat you passing the ball, Simple! I figured Maryville would score on the opening drive, go up by 14 and knock the wind out of Smyrnas sail. Once I found out that he was out for the game I knew it would be a uphill battle. The Smyrna coach did a very good job pounding the ball and eating away the game clock. On the safety, if the RB goes to his right its a 1-3 yrd gain. He doesn't, Marvyille gets lucky and gets 2 points. The 2nd and 3rd string QB's for Maryville almost lost the game (Fumble and ALMOST an int inside the 10yrd line). Maryville gets lucky again towards the end by a bad snap and that's all she wrote. I really thought Smyrna was going to be a lot better and faster by reading all the posts but I was not very impressed. What did impress me was their size and they never quit. These are just some of my thoughts of the game. Again, congratulations to both teams on a great season.
  5. The biggest Q is....Can Maryville stop Young again? Maryville dominated FHS tonight and Bearden pulled off a great win away. Hows does this game play out?
  6. As far as the refs go, overall they did a good job IMO. I saw at least 2 plays where the ref could have thrown the flag for pass interference but did not, and then when alcoa covers clean and make a great play on the goal line, they get called for pass inter. Clean play, there should not have been a flag IMO. There were 2-3 other times where alcoa should have been called for holding but was not, but im sure there were as many plays where maryville should have been called for holding and they weren't. The refs cant catch every single penalty and do make mistakes.....get over it people. For the game, the better team won, no doubt about it. Alcoa line dominated maryville on both ends of the ball. Alcoa was more physical and a lot faster. I was not impressed by alcoas play calling at all. Inside, Inside, Wide.....Inside, Inside, Wide.... but then again, if inside, inside, wide, won me ball games I'd do the same. GQ out coached Rankin but Alcoa outplayed Maryville. Excellent game, better team won, and I hope both are able to go to state and bring the golden ball back to where it belongs....BC
  7. I agree with you 100% Speed was the factor and this has always been one of Maryville's problems. Just like Alcoa, WS ran it on Maryville's and thats how the game was won. The O put up enough points to win but WS played a great game. What many people don't want to recognize is that this was one of our youngest teams. We played a ton of sophtmores. They will only get better. My senior year we didn't win state. The next time we didn't win state was my brothers senior year. Those losses were hard but this one (maybe because im older now) weren't as bad because this team was very young, inexperienced, and moved up to 6A. In my eyes, this season as a great success. I feel bad for the seniors but they have set the stage for the next X amoung of generations of Maryville players. Long term, this was a great season. I said it before and I'll say it again, the only reason so much negativity is being thrown around is because those people are such low lifes that they have to degrade others in order to make themselves feel better. I have no problem with anyone saying that Maryville did not look as good as everyone has been talking about....because they didn't. Watching that one game, one might come to the conclusion that Maryville is not that good. They were not that good for one night, anyone that knows anything about Maryville football knows exactly how good these kids are and how much hard work they put into this program. Every single football program knows about the Maryville High School Red Rebels for a reason. Again, I congratulate both teams on a great football season!
  8. Great job WS! Congratulations on an great game. You guys played like you wanted to prove something and you deserved to win. I haven't see Maryville play this poorly since the Alcoa game. Also Congratulations to Maryville on a great season. When you lose so many starters on O and D most teams in TN would be down and their goal would have been just to make it to the playoffs. It was a lot of fun watching you improve your game throughout the year. To the WS community, players, coaches, parents, and fans, Congratulations and ENJOY this great accomplishment. It just shows how rare and difficult it is to win the golden ball. Most team and players in the state of TN will never accomplish this and thats what makes it so special. In Blount County we only count a successful season if it ends with winning the state game and if you took a look at the Maryville and/or Alcoa trophy case you'd be amazed. I usually post everytime Maryville plays but I dont think I have for this game. I saw too many non-maryville fans and a couple of Maryville fans saying how this will be an easy win for Maryville. As much as I wanted this to be the case I knew WS was way better than advertised by a lot of people. You guys played a good game and I hope you enjoy this win. I wish you good luck next year also. As for Maryville, great season. There is nothing to be ashamed of. There are still people and there always will be those who say you can't play for the big boys and crap like that. You lined up against a lot of great teams this year and you smashed them in the mouth. You proved many many people wrong. This season has been a great success in my eyes. You proved that you can play with anyone, now go out and start practicing for next year and prove that you can win stat in 6A. Know that those who disrespect you the most have the least in life. Those who say that Maryville can't do this or that are the ones who have not done anything in the personal and athletic life. You have achieved great things, remember that. Well, this is it for me.I hope everyone has a great Christmas. It has been a fun season and I will debate with most of you next football season. Remember: Its not what you do or say when everyone is around, its the things you do and say when no one is around.
  9. I think someone from the daily times must have been reading coacht because they've had more articles on alcoa and maryville this week than they've had all year. Also a great article on Philip and I couldn't agree more with what GQ said. http://www.thedailytimes.com/article/20 ... /-1/sports This is not the whole article (you have to buy the paper for that) but its a good one!
  10. Who are the schools? Also, is the kicker a senior or junior? According to sources he really likes LSU!
  11. Call me crazy but I believe Toki McCray is ahead of both of them, they are nice QB's and winners, but Toki McCray was better. Can't agree or disagree with you here. I have always heard that Toki was an awesome athlete and QB but I was younger when I watched him play so I don't remember him a whole lot. I can given an honest opinion starting with Nick Giles till now
  12. As a former player and long time fan, I think Philip is the best overall QB Maryville has had in a long time. Cade who initially went to play for the old ball coach at South Carolina is my second pick, he didn't have the size (weight) but had great vision and ability to get the ball to the open reciever. Philip can get the ball where it needs to go and he runs the ball very well. If he does not get offered from a D1 school I can see him walking on to a big time program and taking 2-3 yrs to develop into a great QB. He certanly has the leadership mentality and under the right system he would be a very succesful QB.
  13. That was a great game. The only thing that surprised me was the number of charter buses. Its very difficult playing with with the T when you are behind 21 points. I am no fan of the T at all but I am also not the coach of Riverdale so it doesnt really matter I guess. I thought that the Riverdale passing game was better than advertised (at least better than I thought). It seemed like the balls were thrown right to the receivers but for some reason or another they could not hold on to the ball. It might have something to do with the fact that they are playing in a running offense so the lack of game experience might have been the reason (just an opinion). I thought that the Riverdale crowd and game day atmosphere was pretty neat. I wish Maryville fans were more alive. I think it used to be like that until the administration took away a lot of the things which enhance the game day experience. Either way it was nice to see all the fans on the other side. I did not think Maryville would make it this far. Not because they are not goo enough but because I thought the competitions would be a lot more difficult. This belief comes from years of talk from the 5A schools of just how much more difficult it was. Now I see that the level of competition is just a little bit better. I also believe that if it had not been for Maryville, teams such as Central, among others, would have some golden balls in their trophy case. I see Maryville being a championship contender many many years. This has been the youngest and most fun team I have seen in a long time. Again, great game between two great traditions.
  14. sitting on the 35. Great atmosphere from the riverdale fans.....should be a good one!
