  1. Coach 763, at no time in my post did I ever mean any disrespect for Coach Johnson at all. They were very much positive comments! I started to write "Coach Gerald Johnson" but wasn't quite sure if most anyone else would know who I was referring about. I have the utmost respect for him, as well as the other "elder statesmen" that have been mentioned. Also, I was very sincere about someone writing about the history of football in Nashville. The sooner the better, guys like you and shadow are not getting any younger either!
  2. One might hope that people like shadow and coach763 would write a book or publish something about the History of Nashville Football, or overall athletics for that matter. You know guys, you could supplement your social security income or put a down payment on the "retirement home" or something. You could include other people with information such as Clint Parnell, Mama Johnson, or any of the old heads who would love to pass the info on to us young pups who still care.
  3. Ronald Hale, as big as he was, was a giant teddy bear in school. On the field he was a monster! Earnest Cecil is a detective for Metro Police. Preston Brown was the running back and was fast! The clinic bowl game with gallatin in 78 was a great game. The game between Maplewood and Oak Ridge in 74 or 75 at MTSU was the coldest game I have ever been to. Probably the most famous Maplewood player was E.J. Junior (Alabama and Miami Dolphins). He was a stud to watch. Jbmtpb, that may be a tall order and i'm sure we would leave someone out. E.J. was drafted by Miami, Shelton Quarles and Robert Davis (Whites Creek)were drafted by Tampa Bay, Jeff Gooch (Overton) went to Tampa Bay, help me out guys
  4. Maplewood had the goods back in the 70's. If I remember correctly (if not coach763 & shadow needs to give me some of their medicine), almost all of Coach Elrod's assistants went on to become head coaches themselves in Metro, Phil Grammer, Doug Mullican, and lest we not forget "Mama" Johnson (basketball)who is still going strong on football sidelines across metro today!! Yes the atmosphere was great back in the day and so were the players, coaches, and fans!
  5. Maplewood played in several Clinic Bowls in the early to mid 70's. One against Oak Ridge, man was it cold that night, and one or two against Father Ryan I believe. Maybe coach 763 or Shadow can give some more insight, as long as their medicine holds out
  6. CHHS72 & others, I didn't mean to insult anyone by my quote of the rule. I did state the rule earlier (as quoted from National Federation and TSSAA). The interpretation is simply this: A cheerleader's megaphone is to be used by cheerleaders to cheer through. Not to bang on the floor, the wall, wave in the air behind the basket, nor to give to people in the stands to yell through. Coaches, administrators, and officials have been told, over the last several years, that most anything else is an artificial noise maker and is illegal. This includes things such as small megaphones, rocks in a jug, air horns, musical insturments, etc.. That is the "interpretation" which has come down from TSSAA. You know as I do that some people across the state, including officials, might turn a "deaf ear" to the way it is to be enforced. Some schools have asked permission from the TSSAA on the small megaphones to sell at booster clubs. The problem comes in when they sail out of the stands or some idiot is yelling in one in an referee's ear or a opposing player's ear. Like most other places, a few ruin it for everyone else. I hope this clears up some of the questions
  7. alliegator11 : WELL SAID!! AMEN!! ENCORE!!
  8. The TSSAA (National Federation) rule is quite clear about the use of artificial noisemakers! NONE!! The referees should have kept their mouth shut and let the TSSAA supervisors notify the schools as to what they can/can't do. The whole issue is being blown out of proportion. The rule is clear, if there is a question or you have a complaint, the complaint department is located at 3333 Lebanon Road, Hermatige Tennessee and their phone number is (615)889-6740. Ask for Mr. Carter, Mr. Beck, or Mr. Meneese. [Edited by yodude on 12-12-02 12:15P]
  9. Like them or not, rules are made to be inforced. If the TSSAA tells officials "enforce the rules" then they must inforce the rules! And yes, if officals don't, they can lose games from their supervisors!! Also, the purpose of megaphones is so that cheerleaders can cheer louder, not bang on the floor, fan use, or for any other reason!! Behind every rule, there is a valid reason as to why it was done. Lastly remember, the rules the TSSAA plays by are NATIONAL FEDERATION rules which are used in almost every state in the country. So the rules you see here are the same used all across the contry. I know for a fact that Georgia and Kentucky are using the new "waistband" rule this year too!! Play ball, do what your asked to do, and have fun

    top nose gaurd

The kid from Hendersonville is the best nose that I have seen in years. I forgot his name but he did a lot of damage last year. Must be coaching because Andy Griffin (defensive coordinator) does a great job each year in his 3 - 4 set.
  11. Taco Bell, Nacho Bell Grande, Tortila Chips & Salsa, 2 Enchalidas, Bean Buritto, Chalupa, Refried Beans, and Spanish Rice. Jalapinos on the side, hold the guacolome. Make the margaretta frozen please .
  12. Coach T, Can you stick a fork in this thread? IT'S DONE!!! Please    !!
  13. The three referees were Andy Griffin, Chip Sullivan, and Rick Eaton. And they did an excellent job with both games.
  14. Jeremy Laster is one of the best, if not the best player I have seen out of Nashville in a long time. He has a tremendous bat and is a top outfielder with a great arm. Has all of the tools to make it to the next level. If he continues to work hard, the sky could be the limit for this young man!
  15. Halo rule and "two yard belt", which exist in the NFL and the NCAA don't exist in high school football. The kicking team only needs to give the returner an opportunity to catch the football. Rule 6-5-6 in N.F. rulebook states "....K shall not touch the ball or R, ..... nor obstruct R's path to the ball". It may look ugly but in high school, it is not a foul. ELA is also right about the other things which can take place on a punt or free kick.
  16. Gentlemen, let's not lose perspective. The origional thread delt with "Best of the EARLY 80's". CoachF has them all from that time period. What a group of guys! Never a dull moment watching them
  17. Are you on the varsity or 9th grade team? Varsity wise, Coker had a good night in the Varsity game with Hunters Lane, no one else. Freshman wise, Antioch had a back that broke a run of about 50 yards in the freshman championship game against Hunters Lane the night before! However, all said, he might have gained an additional 20 more yards the entire rest of the night! 180 yards?? please!! You got beat 40 - 16!! When you finish with your remedial english class, go next door to the remedial math class too!!

  20. Is he also on Viagra or is it Anti-Viagra?
  21. It's quite simple. In the first and second round, if both teams are from the same area and are serviced by the same referee associations, the crew will come from that area too. If the two teams use different referee associations, the referee crew will come from a different part of the state. In the third round on, the crew will always come from a different part of the state. Most all of the time, west tn. officials go to nashville, and vice versa while knoxville officials go to chattanooga and vice versa. Not always but most of the time. It is a good system that is set up.
  22. Hunters Lane won the varsity game too, 27 - 17.

    best team (freshman)

Not even close!! Hunters Lane beat Antioch 40 - 14 for the Metro Nashville City Championship and a 8 - 0 record.
  25. Jeremiah Crutcher of Hunters Lane!! By far the fastest of anyone in Metro Nashville, maybe the state! Has the speed to out run you and the toughness to run over you and keep going. Led Hunters Lane to a 8 - 0 City Championship the other night. Also passed the ball for 2 long scores.
