  1. I heard the red man from CN has resurfaced as a candidate to come back to the Hill. Pretty reliable source.
  2. players' coaches usually equals trouble in the long run. Ask the head man at UT. The wrong kind of kids will take advantage of it and lose respect. All kids deep down want discpline. To me the real definition of a players' coach is one that does the right thing when the wrong thing is easier. Example- treating the same offense with the same consquence regardless of depth chart position. This gains respect in the long haul of a program.
  3. The killer of high school sports- coaches "suggesting"that "their" players only play their sport. Any principal / AD worth his or her weight would not let this happen. Any coach who is for specializing the players is in it for themselves, not the kids.
  4. Rankin will not end up in J.C. Every year he likes for people to talk about him maybe taking another job. A pretty good philosophy considering he gets a raise on every scare he puts into boosters. Very good coach, no doubt, but he's staying put (If I had to bet). The rumor I've heard around Morristown is that Coach Woods could have it if he wanted it, but you know how rumors are. Is there anyone on the current staff at S.Hill being considered, or maybe from next door Virginia?
  5. when you are constantly in the public eye such as a high school head football coach, class or lack of class shows it's face eventually. Congrats to the Rebels, Falcons, and Tornadoes--great representation of East TN.
  6. s.doyle could have also beaten Maryville if it weren't for the defense, offense, special teams, the hot weather, etc. You guys also had Knox Central on the ropes, but again..offense, defense, and weather conditions cost you all that one. Did you know if not for Michael Jordan, Karl Malone and John Stockton would have a couple of rings. On a positive note, S.Doyle's program is in better shape now as a whole than it ever was under the last regime.
  7. general perception: Maryville--class (can't describe it, but you know it when you see it), and I'm not even talking about the scoreboard. It's not a coincidence that they win. It's not luck. They have a "class thing" going on over there, from academics, athletics, to great leaders. It feeds off itself. In every aspect of the school / community, they strive to be winners. All the scoreboard does is remind everybody that they got it going on. If a school hates Maryville and what it stands for, then that particular school has some severe disfunction. If I am starting a new football program and / or school, Maryville High School is the first place that I'm going to see what they are doing. Us East Tennesseeans should embrace the unbelievable run that the Rebels are on. Why wouldn't a parent want their kid to be a part of all of that?
  8. What was kept pretty quiet back in the mid-90's when Turner returned to CN was that Ken Sparks had verbally accepted the head coaching job at Samford. Within 24 hours after "sleeping" on it, he changed his mind. Well, during this short time frame, Coach Turner was lured back to Jefferson City to take over the controls of Head Coach. So, the Eagle Club gladly put him as director to make up for the mishap. The red man is the real deal, a complete football coach blended with unbelievable people-skills. CN wouldn't let him go just too easy. Has any of the DB coaches been mentioned as a possibility?
  9. James Little Man Stewart - Morristown West - class of 91 Travis Cozart- Lenoir City- class of 93 Scotty Witt-Clinton- class of 93 Ricky Upton- Jefferson Co.- class of 96 or 97 (I think) Lee Roy Thompson- AE- mid 80's Reggie Cobb- Knox Central- mid 80's Brigham Lyons- Greenville- early 90's Dustin Moore-Greenville- mid 90's Shawn Summers- Oak Ridge- early 90's Spencer Gulmire- Oak Ridge- class of 2006 Jeff Jennings / Scooter Houston-- Jefferson County -class of 2004 These are the best ones in East Tennessee that I have seen with my own eyes.
  10. If Maryville takes care of the ball, they win. West will make turnovers hurt more than most. West is well coached as is Maryville. The challenge will be if Maryville can stop West's running game, and if West can slow down Maryville's overall offensive game. I truly believe that the only team that can beat Maryville is Maryville itself. But, that's why they play the game. West has had more success than anyone else against the Rebs. It will come down to big plays and special teams.
  11. I've heard the Mike Turner rumor. With Carl Torbush as CN's Assistant Head Coach, the red man might be interested. If the Hill can lure him, he would be the obvious choice. Are the Toppers going to be competitive with the $$$? Year in, year out Science Hill looks as good on paper as anyone. So, this wouldn't be a rebuilding type thing, more like a change of atmosphere thing, topper people, am I right? Prime time job in my opinion. With a big athletic program such as yours, one would think that it needs to be addressed with a proven, can't miss head coach, in-order to get kids out, and to give the kids confidence. good luck on your search.
