The Hunters Lane coach was pushing for the nails to be cut because his guy kept bleeding from getting scratched. His blood time was about up because the cuts were deep enough that they would not stop bleeding. If you were a coach and your guy kept getting scratched and had the possibility of losing the match because he could not stop bleeding, you would most likely ask the referee to check the other kids nails because that is the most common reason for the scratches and cuts. Besides after the first cut, the coach asked the nails to be checked, the referee said no, Dowell used three minutes of blood time, then after starting the match again, he developed three new scratches, one of which was bleeding, he asked the referee to check the nails again, the referee did so, I can tell you the coach did not want the Cordova kid to get disqualified, he simply wanted his guy to stop getting cut to ensure that he was not going to be disquailified himself for blood time.
