  1. It's being brought up because this is a chat site and it is not a bad topic...although (I agree) somewhat untimely. As for the question being decided in Feb, the difference was a disk flip. The comparison of the last tournament results, while more impressive for Pennington, are not applicable since they didn't wrestle each other or have common opponents (right?).
  2. Franklin Road Academy had an eighth grader win a couple of matches at the DI State tournament.
  3. The problem is the member schools. Many of the better programs are not members of TMSAA. There are proposals for regional team tournaments, unforturnately they may not be very tough...less so than many conference tournaments.
  4. Clarksville, Arte and his crew did indeed put on a fine tournament. As for the Clarksville cheerleaders...they mopped the mats. Other cheerleaders can help with a tournament, but not many mop mats too. Speaking of other cheerleaders, the Bradley and Soddy squads fired up their fans with a pretty good dual themselves before the finals. And Coach Logsdon, you have a team of beasts. I'm not here to start another thread, but there is NO other team in Tennessee that can hang with you. Congrats to all for a great tournament.
  5. What an exciting match. Comes down to last match...win or lose 140 wins or losses the match. Top ranked 135 v top ranked 140. Myers launches Manley (feet over head) and doesn't even get the takedown (to Manley's credit); Manley scrambles to secure a takedown...and the rest as they say is history. Congrats to all who participated.
  6. wrestlingfan, you pick the date, but you have to consider the freshman season ends last week so your date has to be soon because the teams won't stay together long. You can pick this weekend, but more middle tn teams are involved in the region duals than state duals, also the GC is not just a freshman tournament, it is also a middle school team tournament, and most are involved this weekend. You can pick a day during the week...no you can't. You could pick the weekend after the state duals, oh yeah, that is the individual region, well how about the next week, crap, that's the state tournament, and after the season is FIVE weeks later than the freshmen were scheduled to wrestle. I agree that Feb 1 is not optimal, and as you can see, it wasn't chosen lightly. There are only five mid tn teams involved in the state duals, and I promise you there is no choice. There is no one around that would think twice about helping your team in the state duals than participating in a freshman tournament. It was Feb 1 or cancel. Hope you still come if you're not wrestling or watching the Duals.
  7. Hillsboro forfeited to Overton in the finals. They both go to the region duals. Hillsboro takes on McGavock in one semi.
  8. Cheatham County beat Sycamore on the 6th criteria of the tiebreaker. Springfield got third over Mt. Juliet on the same criteria.
  9. Coach Blair, I agree. John Lennon was tough. I remember John beating himself up before a match to get fired up against a defending state champ(Charles Houston-pretty bad himself), and John went right through him. Along those same lines, and I'm not from Memphis, a contributor to this site, Tom Marable was one tough ######, as was Mike Blosser. Just thought of two more...Mean Chuck Bean the Wrestling Machine and the guy that idolizes him David Thoni. [Edited by blindzebra on 1-22-03 11:15P]
  10. The Duals had nothing to do with the cancellation. It was strictly a safety issue. While it is true the duals got scheduled for the same day, they were going to be incorporated into the tournament.
  11. The only conversation posted is about the wrestling. That says it all concerning the officiating. And, MatMaid...like that hasn't happened before. [Edited by blindzebra on 1-18-03 10:20P]
  12. Is Greene from Cheatham County not worth mentioning...he's a two-time state placer and only lost two matches this year; he got stuck at Hillwood and lost to the powerhouse from New Orleans??
  13. Did Jim and Paul Simpson really call the match? Did they affect the outcome? It was a Simpson wrestling the last match.
  14. Say what you want about West TN wrestling, they are coming. Collierville spent two solid weeks in Middle Tn taking on all comers in Franklin, Clarksville (Rossview), and Ryan-and were more than very respectable. Christian Brothers has not backed from any competition either. Neither has Houston. They are all getting good seasoning for Chattanooga in Feb. Should bode well for all.
  15. I'm going to need some help, but here's what I remember: 103-great match, Dunning got put on his back and got down 0-4, great comeback to win over McCallie (could have been best match) 112-ryan beat a very good Gooden (Red Bank); Gooden put Simpson on his back twice in semis; the anticipated rematch between mba and ryan almost happened in consolation as ryan won a close semi 5-4 119-Cody Cleveland?? (help) 125-Silberman wins (don't remember much) 130-Raymond Dunning handily beat an outstanding Willie Furman (Red Bank); loaded weight class 135-Manley looked to be in for a tough finals before bulling his opponent (Red Bank?) to his back and pinning him in the first period; not sure if he got out of the 1st period the whole tournament; could have been OW 140-Ryan Scott gets beat in a slugfest 0-1 to Marable; Two tough SOBs 145-Brentwood very smooth in outclassing Ryan 152-Ryan wins on last second near fall over an Alabama guy who had some quality wins in tourney 160-McTorry terrorized this weight class pinning in finals 171-Marable beat Luttrell 1-0 in another slugfest; hardly the anticipated killing; should be prelude to DII finals 189-Rumble; Davis (Westside-Memphis) beats Goodman (MBA) in nonstop action; could have been best match 215-Thornhill-MBA (didn't see much of this match) 275-Crosby-Greenville outclassed, outmanned everyone in weight class; pinned Cooper-MBA in finals (could have been OW) Sorry I didn't know all names and results, but it should be a start.
  16. Wrestler4life, if you are telling me Cleveland wrestlers didn't enter weigh-ins after the door closed (signifying the start) then I guess I apologize, I heard different, but I guess you know. One thing you don't know is how many middle tennessee refs officiate the state tournament. Middle TN is well represented with very quality officials. There are just as many (within one either way) calling the finals as Chattanooga also. The Sonic tournament was the 5th tournament going on in the area that weekend. I know some of the officials for that tournament were pretty green, which is why I'm surprised by the behavior of your coach (since he is an official). If anyone should know how to talk to and support the officials it is an official. The reason officials have to "ding" coaches is to keep from getting run over. If the stories are even in the ballpark of being true, then an unsportsman penalty on your coach early in the tournament would have probably allowed him to see the finals from the corner. And in answer to an earlier post, officials can't pick and choose the rules they follow. Unauthorized hair covering prohibit a wrestler from competing...period. The official doesn't have a choice. Just like they couldn't allow someone to compete wearing high top basketball shoes. Hair covering usually means the hair is longer than allowed or not in its natural state (corn rows). The rule is in place for safety. Fingers have been broken from getting caught in long hair. It probably hasn't happened to anyone you know because the rule has been in place for a long time so the situation doesn't come up...but it did before the rule. Corn rows can be abrasive, so there is a rule to keep them covered...in a protective covering, not a nylon. Now, I too would be upset if an official was grabbing my wrestler inappropriately, but neither would I allow a coach to continue around kids whose only reaction is to kill the ref. Officiating is a tough job. I'd invite you to try but I don't think you'd cut it.
  17. Wrestler4life, you're smelling like a liar. The way I heard it is that Jack showed his backside as soon as he showed up for weigh-ins with you dragging kids in the back door. I don't know you but Jack knows better. If the officiating was terrible, it was in not dealing with out of line coaches sooner. I'd rather talk about the tournament which sounds great. I commend all participants. I can't believe a middle school tourament got such a turn out...Baylor, Cleveland, Christian Bros, as well as good teams from middle TN. The good wrestling is a lot deeper than it used to be and this is probably a good reason why.
  18. You terribly underestimate him to say all he did was muscle and had no technique. One thing you can say about he and Simpson was they had great drive and a refusal to lose.
  19. McCarty was a beast. I remember a state champion?? from Mater Dei defaulting during a match because his coach was afraid Matt would break him in half. Hope he is doing well at Michigan State. Would like to hear more about him.
