  1. The Bearettes have hosted 3 sub-state games since 2000, losing all three. Last year to Blackman,2004 to Columbia and 2001 to Oakland. They didn't play in a sub-state several years during this time frame but the last sub-state that they won was in 1995 over White County. This was the year they went to the state finals losing to Shelbyville.
  2. There has been a charge to park at the District 5-AAA tournament for several years now. It's actually a donation to the host school's sports programs.
  3. That is game 2 on Monday at 7:30 CST (or slow time as it is known in the Eastern Time Zone). Game 1 is Bradley Central vs Coffee County.
  4. The district tournaments are totally controlled by each local district. The TSSAA has absolutely no say so on how you stage this tournament. They only require that each district send four teams to the region tournaments. How you determine which four teams advance to the region is up to each district.
  5. The Bears very successful head coach recently picked up win number 400. The win just helps cement his place in the strong tradition of Bradley Central basketball. It goes along with 8 District 5-AAA tournament championships, 8 Region 3-AAA championships, 5 trips to the state tourney, 2 games in the state finals, 3 Mr. Basketball nominees, 1 Mr. Basketball winner. He also has the most wins as the boys coach at Bradley Central, eclipsing Coach Bill Walker's 328 wins. Coach Smith's granddad, Tip Smith, coached the Bears bach during 1939-42 and again 1950-55 and won 240 games himself. Coach Tip Smith won 2 state titles and also finished 5th and 3rd during a four year stretch in his first tenure. Congrats to Coach Smith on a tremendous career at Bradley Central. Tournament time nears so let's see what the Bears have up their sleeve as this season rapidly comes to a close.
  6. As of 01/07/12 1) Bradley Central (15-1, 4-0) 2) Ooltewah (9-5, 3-1) 3) Cleveland (3-2, 8-7) 4) Rhea County (7-9, 2-2) 5) McMinn County (6-10, 2-3) 6) Walker Valley (5-9, 1-3) 7) Soddy-Daisy (6-8, 0-4)

  11. This 12th annual tourney will be held Friday thru Sunday, 11/25-11/27, at Bradley Central High School in Cleveland, TN. In the 12 years of its existence there have been 5 different teams to play in this tournament and win a state title in the same season. There are a total of 14 state championships among the 8 teams playing in this year's tourney. There have been at least 4 different Ms.Basketball winners to participate in the tourney. This year's participants (with last years records)include: 1)GPS (23-1)--defending state champs in DII-AA. 2)Oak Ridge (21-7), 3)McMinn County (14-20), 4)Wilson central (26-6), 5)Brainerd (15-9), 6)Brentwood Academy (16-10), 7)Bradley Central (27-6), 8 Alcoa (19-12). This years schedule--all times EST. Check this thread each day for results and box scores.
  12. Bryce had successful surgery late last night, early morning. Prognosis is out until early January, 8-10 weeks. It's his non-shooting hand and he'll be able to continue with a lot of basketball activities during his recovery time. Best of luck to Bryce and the Bears this season in basketball.
  13. The Cookeville field was in terrible condition for a playoff game. It looked like a mud pit even before the teams warmed up. Yes, it was the same for both teams but the word is out the the Cavs like to doctor their field according to other district coaches, depending on the nights opponent. The home crowd was pathetic for a regular season game let alone a playoff game. I don't know what it takes to get people there but obviously football is not it. Wildcats by 21.
  14. There are a couple of Bears that do live in Chattanooga who started school at Bradley Central as freshmen. It doesn't matter where you live, it's where you started school. According to the TSSAA this is 100% legal.
  15. 10th meeting between these two with the Bears leading the series 5-4. Last game between these two was 1998 with the Bears prevailing 49-35.
  16. Without Simbeck at QB the Cherokees will really have a problem with a freshman at QB. Simbeck was ejected in the 4th quarter of the Bradley Central game. Look for them to come up with some new plays where there are a lot of direct snaps taken by their speedy running backs. If they can't get it done then the season will end on Friday night. Both have played and lost to Farrgut while MCHS has also lost to McCallie who is very mediocre. Oak Ridge lost to Powell and Maryville who are both 10-0 and ranked #1 in their respective divisions. Good luck and may we have no injuries!
  17. These two teams will battle it out at Bear Stadium with the winner becoming District 5-AAA champs and hosting the first round of the playoffs. Both teams are 7-2 and 5-0 in district play. Coach Damon Floyd is 31-30 in his 6th season at BCHS and Coach Bo Cagle is 32-21 in his 5th season at MCHS. Floyd is 2-3 versus MCHS while Cagle is 3-1 vs the Bears. This is the first time in his career that Coach Floyd has been above the .500 mark. The Bears lead the series 51-34-3. All three tie games ended in a 0-0 score. This is the 2nd oldest rivalry (88 games) in the state, trailing only South Pittsburg vs Marion County. The Bears are averaging 34.7 on offense and the Cherokees 32.4. On defense the Bears surrender 17.8 and McMinn County 21.8. Common opponents-- vs. Cleveland--Bears won 18-0, Cherokees won 35-20. vs Soddy-Daisy--Bears won 52-14, Cherokees won 44-20. vs. Rhea County--Bears won 41-9, Cherokees won 34-14. vs. Ooltewah--Bears won 41-39, Cherokees won 30-26. vs Walker Valley--Bears won 42-0, Cherokees won 30-10. So what does any of this mean????? Just that there should be a whale of a ball game at Bear Stadium next Friday. Kickoff is at 7:30 and there will not be an ESPNU broadcast so it will be over well before 11:00 p.m.! Good luck to both teams and may the game be injury free.
  18. It's a shame that the game is on ESPNU. Virtually no local folks will see it. There will be more at the game than actually watch it live on the boob tube.
  19. You left out Rhea County. They use Chattanooga refs unless they've changed this season.
  20. What do you consider the 'perceived weaker links'?
  21. This will be the 38th meeting between the Bears and Eagles. Da Bears lead the series 22-14-1, winning last year 28-24 in a shootout at BCHS. These two teams didn't play after the 1996 season until 2009 due to classification and district alignments but it'll be an ongoing series again with the latest classification. This is a crucial game for the Bears in the district and Rhea won't have I'tavius Mathers in the lineup. Mathers burned the Bears for 336 yards which was a career high for him rushing but don't look for the Blaze to win a state title. It takes more than one player to win it and there are teams out there who will stop him enough to make someone on the Blackman beat them and it just ain't there folks. One-dimensional teams don't win state titles. Mathers is the best 'speed' back that the Bears have seen in a while and the Bears barely laid a hand on him on most of his big gainers. He didn't have to break tackles against the Bears, simply get outside and run. He is one of the top three backs that come to mind that the Bears have faced over the years starting with Jeff Womac at Warren County in the 1980's and then Gerald Riggs at Red Bank the latest in 2001. Red Bank won the state title that year but they had lots more fire power than Blackman. By the way, look for Mathers to drop Ole Miss and go elsewhere when they let Houston Nutt 'resign'. GO BEARS! Prediction Bears 42, Rhea 13
  22. Bradley Central football is broadcast on Q93.9 as it has been for many, many years.
  23. Both teams come in at 1-0 with impressive wins last week. Baylor's total thrashing of Soddy-Daisy. The Bears 34-12 win over Polk County was also a good sign for the Bear offense and defense as the season begins to unfold. Here's some interesting facts for these two opponents. 1) Coach Phil Massey in his 6th season at Baylor is 96-59 (75.0%) overall, 33-23 (58.9%)at Baylor Coach Damon Floyd is now 26-27 (49.1%) in his 6th season as Papa Bear. 2) Baylor first played the Bears in 1916, the Bears first ever varsity season and won 26-0. They didn't meet again until 1970, Baylor wins 22-0. The last time they met was in 2000, Baylor wins 38-31. Baylor leads the series 11-3. 3) State titles in football--Baylor was voted state champs in 1929, 1931 and 1944. They won the playoff title in 1973 over Hillcrest, 6-0. Bradley Central was voted state champs in 1961 and won the playoffs in AAA in 1976, 50-48 in 3OT over Jackson Central-Merry. This game was voted national game of the year in some publications. 4) Baylor has more state championships than any school in the state with 116. Bradley Central is tied with Oak Ridge for most state titles by a public school with 37 in all sports. Good luck to both teams and let's have an injury free night. It wouldn't hurt to have another rain shower prior to kickoff again this week.
  24. Can someone give me the name, grade, size of this year's QB? Last year's stats?
  25. The Bears and Wildcats kick off the season again this Friday in week 0 for the third consecutive year. The Bears return a lot of offense but lost a lot on defense while Polk County also lost on both sides of the ball. It should be a great crowd in what is quickly becoming a great old, but recently renewed rivalry. Good luck to both teams and may we have an injury free game and please Lord let this heat break before Friday!!! Here are some fast and fun facts about this series-- 1) The Bears lead the series 23-7-1. 2) The first game ever betewen these two came in 1917 (13-12 Polk County wins) in what was Bear legend Jimmie Lovell's first game ever as head coach at BCHS. 3) Polk County coach Derrick Davis is 86-38 (69.4%) entering his 12th season at PCHS. 4) Coach Damon Floyd is 25-27 (48.1%) entering his 6th season at BCHS. 5) The Bears won 14 games in a row in this series at one time with Polk County breaking the streak in 2009, 20-13 at BCHS. The Bears won last year at Polk County, 26-16 handing the Wildcats their only loss until they fell to CAK in the 2nd round of the state playoffs. 6) Largest Bear win was 52-0 in 1941. Polk's biggest win was 20-6 in 1938. 7) The Bears returned to the playoffs in 2010 after missing them for 9 consecutive years. 8) Polk County has been to the 3A playoffs for 10 consecutive years under Davis, missing only in 2000, his first year as head coach. Derrick replaced his dad Larry who is still on staff as an assistant. Good luck to both teams!
