  1. And the soap opera continues. What a joke of an administration! Next year will make the 4th coach in 4 years for them. That in it's self tells you something about how serious they are about basketball. Sad thing is they had a guy in my old JV coach (Coach Matney) that was dedicated to the program and would have done a great job. But they wouldn't give him a shot and lost him. Now 2 years and 2 coaches later, the program is in shambles. I can guarantee this would not be the case if they had done the right thing and hired Coach Matney for the job. You know what they say about Karma. To the ball team, hang in there. Don't worry about everything and enjoy the game. My 4 years went to quick and I'd give anything to have them back. To the administration, get it right this time before you do anymore damage.
  2. Update for eaglemom. The latest Tennessean box score has Jamison with 12 points during a win over Santa Fe last night. I guess you're right he's starting because he's the coach's kid. Trust me. I watched him shoot on the side goals during our practices. He's been around the game all his life and I have no doubt he's earned whatever time he gets on the floor. Do me a favor and don't give me any updates. Obviously you don't know much about the game. I'll get my info from a more reliable source from now on. Congrats to East Hickman, Coach Matney, AND Jamison. Hope the best for you and maybe I'll be able to catch a game sometime this year. You can bet I will keep track of you guys somehow.
  3. Wow the first game of the school's second season and already a disgruntled parent. And to top it off a freshmen parent at that. I recognize you because my dad was the same way. He thought he always knew better than Coach what do. I finally had to tell him my biggest problem was him. The best thing you can do for your kid is shut up and support him. Trust me I know. There are plenty of those types up here and there were times I just wished they wouldn't even come to the game. If you were referring to Coach Matney's son against Creekwood, I looked at the Tennessean box score. He had 6 which was tied for the 3rd highest point total on your team. That would have been at least more than 2 of the other starters. Why aren't you complaining about them? I asked how things were going , not for an opinion from a parent who is already whining after the first game. If you want to post anything for me then please state the facts, not your jealous opinions. Your team, your coaches, and your kid deserves better. If you can't be supportive of all of them, then don't say a thing.
  4. Thanks for keeping us updated up here. I played for Coach for 4 years. If your kid will listen to him, then he'll learn a lot. He's tough but fair.
  5. Aren't there any East Hickman fans on here? What's the word on the team this year? Have they scrimmaged anyone yet?
  6. No he gave up being principal when he got basketball on top of football. He got stretched too thin and had some major personal problems due to it. He just decided he didn't want to do it according to what I was told by a close-to-the-situation source. Talk around here is he may be done with football as well. His son is a senior so I guess he's doesn't care what happens to football now. I just think it's hilarious that he's quitting after one year. It leaves the administration eating crow for having given it to him in the first place over Coach Matney. What a steal East Hickman got when they got him. They must be thinking that York is dumber than h#@# for letting him slip away. Not just as a coach but a teacher too. He's missed greatly by the players. One of them told me how much it meant to them that he drove up to watch them at the region at White House last year. I was ticked off when he got screwed over and now with Wright leaving I'm even more ticked to think that Coach could have still been here. Between this and the old building stuff that's going on, I'm ashamed to be an alumni of the place. That said I hope the boys have a good year. I'll always support the team no matter what. Once you've put the uniform on, you're always a Dragon. No amount of stupidity by others will change that. One thing is for sure. You can bet they won't quit fighting in any game. Because of that you can never count them out. Go Dragons.
  7. Rumor has it on the mountain has it that Wright is one and done at York. Guess basketball was harder to coach than he thought. Looks like new assistant coach Gunter will fall into the job because there's no one else around to give it to. He wasn't even coaching last year. He did help Coach E and Coach Matney for a couple of years before that. Bet the York administration are wishing they hadn't screwed Coach Matney over now. Serves them right. I hate for all the players though. Not trying to diss Coach Gunter, but he isn't head coaching material. It will definitely be baptism by fire for him. Good luck to the Dragons. It should be an interesting year.
  8. Was just wondering about East Hickman the other day. With all the turmoil up here in J'town, I was thinking how great it would be to have Coach Matney back here. How are they going to be this year? How's Coach and Jamison doing? I bet their fitting in great down there. Will Jamison be getting any PT this year? What kind of team will they have and will they do any good in their district? Would love to hear about my old coach's new team.
  9. So who are the frontrunners for the York job or should I say jobs? Is anyone even interested?
  10. That's what I heard too. Something about the new cheerleading sponsor was making too much money compared to him. Boy that's really being concerned for the teams you coach. If you're in coaching for money you're in for the wrong reasons. Why should he care what the cheerleading coach makes? What does that have to do with his job? He surely isn't trying to make a statement about principles after this past year.
  11. Surprised this hasn't showed up yet. Is it trying to be kept hush-hush or what? Supposedly, Coach Wright has resigned from both football and basketball. I guess basketball was harder than he thought it was. Kinda hilarious. Defintely has the YAI bigwigs eating crow and wiping egg off their face over hiring him to do basketball over Coach Matney. To bad for the kids of both teams, but it serves all those involved in that big screw up last year right. The word KARMA comes to mind. One of Coach Matney's favorite sayings was "the ball don't lie". I guess he and the ball were right again. Good luck to both the teams, maybe a good decision wil be made this time. And to Coach Matney out there, you're better off not being in a messed up place like this. Hope you are appreciated at East Hickman. York didn't deserve you.
  12. Well I've left things alone for a good while to see how things would go for York, but this is just too embarrassing as an alum and former player. Yes some Upperman fans have been rude. Know it for a fact as I've had adults yell mean stuff to me and my teammates as we sat on our bench during games. However, some are very nice and respectful. It's that way at about every school including York. The college freshmen being talked about has gotten in trouble before at Upperman games for acting rude and wanting to fight. What I find so ironic is that he and his little brother happen to be the coach's sons. This is just another example of the fiasco that has occurred this year with the new coach. Someone posted that he had trouble getting his players off the floor. Well its no wonder when he can't seem to control his own kids. Someone posted back earlier in the year that the landscape of the district would be changed by Coach Wright. Looks like York is going wind up in about the same spot they have been, right in the middle of the pack. Maybe that person, who also said I was on crack, was referring to the York's reputation. No one could ever dispute Coach Matney's reputation and integrity. He was respected by all who knew him and I think some of the things that have gone on with members of this year's team ( both on the floor and off) would not have happened had he been there. It looks like the York powers that be are getting exactly what they deserve for their treatment of Coach Matney. It's too bad some of individual players and the teamas a whole are having to suffer too. Coach is better offbeing elsewhere. York didn't deserve him anyway.
  13. I was just wondering how things were going for East Hickman this year. Ya'll had some posts early in the season, but haven't seen things lately. I noticed you got 5 or 6 wins and I would think that would be pretty good for a first year school. How are things going with Coach Matney and his son down there? I'm sure you're discovering what a great coach he is . I miss playing for him. How is his son playing? He used to come in while we practiced and I always thought he'd make a really good player. I'd say he'd been the MAN at York in a year or two if not for all that happened. I know he was the best player in the 8th grade last year. Just wanting to hear how things are are going that way, and see if Coach is doing good.
  14. I gotta go with my Dragons by 8. It's tough to shoot at Smith. We always seemed to have trouble scoring when we played in that pit. I've not seen them play last the few games with studying for finals and all, but they seem to be playing pretty well.
  15. Hey, Cannon is a hard place to play. We always had a long bus ride down there and then had to sit forever. By the time the game rolled around I was worn out from just sitting. Then throw in all the weird stuff that seemed to happen once the game started. Anytime we came out of there with a victory it was a miracle. The guys will bounce back. Too bad it will have to be against LA.
  16. Agree with alot of that bobcat, but that's my point. You can't say Newbaker would have been in and out because Coach Matney wasn't given the chance to show what he could or would do. What people don't understand is that he and Coach E were a lot different. They didn't always agree completely about things, but Coach Matney did what he was supposed to. He gave his thoughts on things, Coach E made the final decision, and Coach Matney supported his head coach. That's what made him a great assistant and that's why so many of us players are loyal to him. I've never said Coach Wright wouldn't do a good job. I think he will do fine. But my position has been and will always be that a man loyal to this school and to the program was not given the chance to prove that he could as good as or better than Coach Wright. That would have given both football and basketball 2 good coaches instead of one coach spread too thin between both. Not to mention the whole education thing with losing a great math teacher. Even Coach Wright couldn't replace him in the classroom. No one there could.
  17. Great game last night Dragons. Wasn't going to bring it up but since Cokie mentioned it here it goes. If I remember right, Coach Matney found Newbaker walking the halls at York and asked him about playing ball. I remember him looking real goofy when I walked in and saw him shooting. It was even worse when he started practicing. You couldn't doubt he would work hard though. Obviously Coach saw something in him and looks like he was right. Just another example of why he should have been given the shot at being the coach of a team he helped build. York fans have him to thank for finding the guy who put up 30+ on Pickett last night. You guys made him and the rest of us former players proud last night. You did something we had had problems doing. You can do it again later even when Capps is back if you keep working hard. Go Dragons!
  18. Dragonfan, I'm not crying , just stating facts. York may eventually get into form, but you can't tell me that they've received the time this fall that Coach Matney could have given them. Yes They've won games already, but seriously look at the competition. They beat weak teams in Monterey and Oneida and a Cookeville team that was basically a jv at the time. I will support the players all the way, but this team has not gotten the attention they deserve and therefore they will be behind where they could have been at this point. So I am addressing how they will be this year. Their first true test comes with Pickett Tuesday, but I don't think Pickett will have Capps so even then who knows if it will be a true indication. All that being said, Go Dragons.
  19. Congrats to you guys. I think you guys have my old coach helping ya'll out. Coach Matney was a great coach and and even better person. We always knew he cared for us and would support us no matter what. Ya'll won't have anyone more loyal to you than him. Too bad York was as loyal to him as he was to them. I'm sure you've heard how he got screwed over up here. Our loss is your gain. York is 3-0 right now, and he is a big reason for that. He always did a great job with the JV kids and right now it's those kids that are getting most of the playing time for York because of football. I hope you guys listen to what he has to say. If you do, he'll teach you alot. Good luck and let him know that we miss him up here on the mountain.
  20. Great win York. We got to see a lot of the young kids play last nightand they did well. Those kids took their knocks last year in JV as they were freshmen playing against mostly upper classmen. Looks like that paid off. I know who deserves the credit there. This team will definitely benefit from the hard work and dedication of "others." Keep on rolling York!
  21. Starters out or not for both teams, the game still has to be played. It wasn't the prettiest game by either team, but York played hard. They've been coached to do that for years. They held a team to 32 points. Opinions will vary on whether it was the York defense or the lack of Cookeville's scoring threats being present. What I do know is the boys will have to score more than 38 points to win the majority of their games. Even the 2 missing starters aren't going to make that big a difference.
  22. correction Stealer, York's biggest losses were Coaches Winningham and Matney. The team will have to wait on Coaches Wright and Williams to finish football and the way York is playing that may be a while.
  23. They would be better if they hadn't run off a great coach and teacher. I played for Coach Matney and had him in class. He was the best math teacher that place has ever seen and worked his butt off for us guys. The team, their parents, the teachers, and the community were all pulling for him to get it. Unfortunately, a few administrators had some hidden agendas and grudges. Now the school the school has lost a great teacher and even more they lost one of the most examples of a good person there is. How does it make sense to have your head basketball coach and the assistant both be football coaches? From what I understand there has been little fall training for basketball team. Now with York likely to go far into the football playoffs, looks like basketball won't get a fair shake. I'm not saying Coach Wright won't do a good job. But Coach Matney put 13 years of blood, sweat and tears into that program under 2 head coaches. He deserved a chance to lead the program. I understand he had all kinds of schools wanting him to come teach and coach. I think he chose a brand new school to go to. I now they'll be glad to have him and I know he'll help build that program into something great. Thanks Coach Matney for all you taught me both on and off the floor. I for one know what you were capable of if given the chance. As for York, they will do well this year, but that will be because the team was coached by Coach "E" and Coach Matney. In the end it was a l;oss for the kids the school and the community.
