From what I understand "x" is $15,000 in apparel, football uniforms are purchased by the school at cost. Other sports uniforms are at 60% of retail. I would assume apparel over "x" would be at that 60% of retail but I don't know that.

I’ll try to be a little more opened minded in my response than the Maryville fans that preceded my post; they obviously believe everyone has an agenda to defame their program and its very impressive achievements, when the question you posed was a legitimate one. I attended Alcoa High School as a tuition student from kindergarten through high school because my parents felt that the quality of education at Alcoa was superior to that Blount County Schools. Having many friends who attended Blount County Schools I would absolutely have to agree with my parent’s assessment, my friends were not provided with the same quality of education as I. I did play sports at Alcoa but never made a significant impact on a game and many players on the sideline were capable of doing the same things I could do. This is the case of most tuition students; they take advantage of the education provided to them so they can achieve more in their future, compared to what they could have achieved at a lesser school. Now of course tuition students do play important roles on many sports teams and certainly several helped Alcoa win its last six state championships, but if you were to look at the percentages I would guess that if you took the percentage of tuition students on the football compared to tuition students in honors English, the English class would be at least double the football team. You are correct sir in saying that there is an advantage in having an “open zone” system you increase revenue, test scores, and often times athletic performance. This increase in school potential is not limitless, first the school has to accept every student within their zone, if there is still room then the school accepts students based on their potential contribution to the systems. Yes athletics are considered when accepting students but in the vast majority of situations that is secondary to academics. This is what distinguishes an “open zone” school from private schools, private schools have the ability to choose every single student that enters the door and if they want to choose a school of only exceptional athletes they have the ability to do that, where as an open zone school has a set capacity and they can only accept tuition students after zoned students and up to the set capacity. So obviously treating them like a private school would not make sense. But how do we compensate for this advantage. The way I see best is to do nothing and encourage all schools to open their zones, it seems to me that if we create competition among schools for students they will be forced to provide better products to students which would logically lead to better students being produced by all schools. This will without a doubt hurt many schools who choose to not compete as vigorously for students but there product would be reflective the effort they put in to gaining students. Maryville, Alcoa, and Oak Ridge are doing positive things for students and the rest of the schools in the state have no excuse not to do the same. Fans needing quit complaining( I don’t believe the original poster is) and encourage their school to catch up because nothing is stopping every system in the state from doing the exact sane thing.

While true, this statement does not genuinely reflect the point you are attempting make, that being the players are not as talented as they are being portrayed throughout this thread. The University of Tennessee in Knoxville has offered zero players who are participants on a football team in class 3A and so there is almost no point to you even posting this. In fact five players in the state of Tennessee have offers from UT, one a DII player, one in 4A, two in 5A, and one in 6A. So now I will proceed to address other issues presented throughout this thread. I’ll start with the comparison of OC Brown to Tyler Robinson. Both are very good players but while Brown’s star ranking is more illustrious most observers deem him to be over rated, he is a very large person with good skills but many observers think he is too raw, this is why he is lacking an offer from UT. It was inferred that his offer list was more grandiose than that of Robinson’s but this is in fact untrue. They each hold an offer Kentucky and each have one other BCS offer according to rivals (Brown-Colorado, Robinson-Virginia Tech). What is largely holding Robinson back is that he at this point he cannot be projected solidly at any one position. No one questions his catching ability but his speed is a concern if he will play TE at the next level. To play OL, where many project him, he would likely have to gain 30 pounds. He could play DE, but again his speed off the edge is not elite and about 15-20 pounds would need to be added to play DT, and then you question can he maintain his speed to be effective at that position. With that said Robinson is the better player at the high school level and he won last year. It would be very difficult to argue that he is no longer as good as he was last year. The comparison of Robinson to Aaron Douglas is a bit of a stretch. They are of similar build and do have similar abilities but Douglas was simply more athletic than Robinson is. Douglas was faster and moved lighter on his feet and their ability to catch is very similar. Douglas was not moved from TE at UT because he was inadequate, he has as of the TE skills of Cottam and Stocker, but the new staff saw potential for him to become an elite tackle and I believe that is certainly possible. No other back as shown the ability or production of Jaron Toney and he without question deserves the award of Mr. Football more than any other player but, the players at Milan were probably better hyped in the preseason and one of them could very well win. The most likely scenario I see playing out is Toney winning the back award and Williamson winning the lineman award based on his linebacking credentials. I do not agree with a back winning that award but there is precedent for it with Chris Donald in 2006, but I honestly can’t say Williamson does not deserve to be Mr. Football.

I am not familiar with all the players you mentioned but I am with a few, Chase Cline is good kid but would only add depth in the secondary at Alcoa or Maryville. And wow Chris Ropp “can make plays at any time”, he’s nice to be around and a funny guy but if he has to make plays for the mountaineers I cannot foresee many plays being made. Clayton shell, if memory serves me correct, was he not the undersized back that took most of the carries for heritage last year if he is who I am thinking of he could never start for either of the good teams in the county. I am sure the players at heritage will try hard but they simply do not have enough talent to be even mediocre, the outlook for heritage is the same as it has been the past several years, dismal. Looking at the schedule they should beat Lenoir City and they may be able to play with Karns and South Doyle but after Sep. 11 they have no chance of winning. I predict 1-9 for the pusillanimous perpetual losers.

Please explain to me where I said the best player on the team should play quarterback, now I did say Cermack should get 30 carries a game and maybe you interpreted that to mean I think heritage should run a single wing where Cermack takes a snap and goes off tackle a la Johnny Majors. This would be a fallacious assumption I do in fact think Hartley is the best quarterback heritage has and he should start. What I have stated is that he is at best the 7th best QB in the county so I’ll run down this one more time. Ryan Stout Alcoa- Proved he was better head to head Austin Talant Alcoa- Proved he was better head to head Hogan Goodson Alcoa- Proved he was better head to head Philip Juhlin Maryville- Started for Maryville last year Paton Robinette Maryville- Proved he was better head to head Zack Witt william blount- Much better athlete better passer Those are six players at the Quarterback position who are unquestionably better, then you have two more that one could argue are better: Landon Turbyfill at Alcoa who would likely have passed Hartley on the depth chart and Zac Owens at william blount who is a better passer and started some games for w.b. last year but is not as good of an athlete. Then of course there is whoever GQ has as his #3 that player could very well be better than Owens. As for the other skill position players heritage has, can someone name me one player whose surname is not Cermack that will play for heritage this year and could have started for Maryville or Alcoa last year. Oh and Greek letters Darrel Waren and Tyler Robinson will start at the defensive ends for Alcoa with the third being Jonovan Henry none of who went to hMS now I believe Tyler Mcglothlin (I think that is his name) is a physical specimen and could see time DE and that may be who you are inaccurately referencing I believe he is a former mustang.

No my evaluation of Hartley is absolutely correct and I stand by my statement that he is at best, the 7th most deft quarterback in the county. There is not an argument that Alcoa has three Quarterbacks that are better than him; that is the reason he transferred. No one will argue that Juhlin at Maryville is better him, and Patton Robinette proved he was superior to Hartley while at hMS. You may be able to field an argument (an incorrect one) for him being more adroit than whoever starts for william blount but it is more likely he will be on about the same level as the backup for william blount. Now I will agree he is better than what you had on roster and anything you have had in recent years but he will not be the savior of heritage football. As for the rest of heritage football I have heard some very positive things about Coach Russell especially related to his character, but I would have serious concerns with the implementation of his spread scheme if I were a supporter of the mountaineers. Considering the lack skill position players hertitage always has, an offense designed to get the ball to many different people in space is the last offense I would run. I have also been told that the one good player heritage has, Michael Cermack, will not play offense. This could be the most arrogant move a coach has ever made, does he really believe that he run a successful offense with his only skilled player on the bench? The only logical offensive scheme heritage could run is one entirely focused on power running where they control the clock and Cermack has about 30 carries. Now under such a system heritage is not likely to win many games but they would lose by margins far less significant than what would be incurred by running a spread. Regardless of who would be placed behind center for heritage he would throw double digit interceptions in a spread system that lacks skill position players.

I'm not sure but it wouldn't surprise me. New coach, new offense, and alot of excitement around the program. The Dailey Times article about the tranfer QB's performance seemed promising. Can anyone explain to me how he transfered and can play. There was a player from Alcoa came to WB last year and could not. Please don't refer me to the TSSAA rule book as I am confused enough already.. I hope all the area teams have a good year. The new playoff system, new regions, and new area coaches or coaching changes should make for an interesting year. Scoot, I know your out there. I'm sure you have some insight to program. Hope every team stays healthy... tpoole12 My understanding of the transfer situation is that the player lived in county while he played for heritage as freshman and while he played for Alcoa as sophomore. He was ineligible to play during the season for Alcoa because he played for heritage the previous year but he was eligible to play in the playoffs, because as we all know heritage is incapable of participating in the playoffs. Now from what I have been told there is an exception to the transfer rule that a player can return to his original school without penalty of suspended play because he is still zoned to attend heritage and that was the school he transferred from. As for the original question with Hartley being the potential starter for heritage I would not look upon that with promise. He left Alcoa being at best the 4th quarterback on their roster and could have very likely ended up at 5th or 6th. More than likely the starter at heritage will be at best the 7th best quarterback in the county and that does not bode well for even a moderately successful season.

I find the situation with this Maples girl very intriguing; it seems to me that either she or family are complete head cases. She had problems at Pigeon Forge Middle so she moved to Eagleton there were strong rumor of turmoil within that team because of her and Howard did everything in his power to appease her so she would stay in the county system which worked for a short time. She played one year at Heritage then leaves for Maryville, one can only assume this is because she was in some way dissatisfied with the environment, as she been with her previous programs, because if you look at level of competiveness it is similar and all other factors relating to the programs are almost the same (with exception of the quality of education Maryville provides but I doubt that was even considered). This will be the third school system in four years and at the rate she is going I can??™t foresee this being her last stop. Good luck with her Maryville but I would not get too attached. Now with that being said I am filled with elation because once again Heritage has an athletic failure and nothing quite makes me smile like the Mountaineers comical failings as an athletic program.

If that is what was meant then by my count its 5-4 with the advantage to Maryville. Maryville having won in 70 76 98 01 02 and Alcoa having Won in 77 79 89 08. And by saying Alcoa has one for 09 that appears to be a prediction, and I guess he is saying Maryville will earn five gold balls in football this year making the count 5-1, though that does not make any sense either. Govolsknox some clarification may be required because not even I can make sense of your commentary.

One of America??™s greatest thinkers and authors Samuel Clemens once said that ???profanity is the weapon of the witless???. If someone has enough intellect to communicate without cursing they generally choose to do so because it still is perceived as language of the layperson, one does not often witness the intellectual elite of our world perorate with aid of profanity and it is because they do not require its use. I have never used profanity and have never required its use because I can communicate without such frivolities. Now with that being said I have never been offended by the use of profane language and accept it as part of our language. I have had coaches that cursed every other sentence because it was simply part of their vernacular and I have had coaches that would not ever use such language. I did not have lack of respect for either as a coach because of their vocabulary, that was entirely based on their ability to teach football, call plays, and develop football players but their was definitely a discrepancy in who I respected more as a man because it is hard for me hold someone in high regard who can not effectively think. The bottom line is that it is a matter of preference but diction has no effect on someone??™s qualification to coach football.

I do commend a young person such as yourself for getting on here and blindly supporting what is likely your older brother??™s team it shows great commitment and fanaticism, but the plain and simple fact is that kingston is just not that good and has no chance of coming out victorious against a team of Alcoa??™s eminence. Simply put kingston does not have players that are of exceptional ilk you have stated that they are coached at a sub par level and they have no recent winning tradition to fall back on. You may point out that kingston played Catholic close but Catholic simply does not have the athleticism Alcoa possesses, they are a good team who was well coached but they are not as talented as Alcoa. If kingston comes within five touchdowns of Alcoa I will be shocked, and yes if Alcoa chooses they can beat kingston by 60 but fortunately for your older brother they will choose not to.
