  1. So, all these have only 1 school feeding them, or is it 1 combined team from other schools put together?
  2. Newspaper? Definitely not in my opinion. The OC school system does not need another article in the paper discussin the woes of the program. Unfortunately, I don't know the best venue. But I do know that the appeal has to be to the jr. high school programs, coaches, students and parents. Nothing will be accomplished in trying to convince the parents of kids already in high school. I do know that you will have to present the case as being for the kids, NOT for the Rebel football program. Little Johnny in the 7th grade has a mommy that knows only that Johnny looks so handsome in his Mustang uniform playing on a team with a 20 player roster. Why, he even gets to play some in some games. Isn't he something!!! Now, if you can figure out how to convince Mommy that Johnny could be playing at a higher level, accomplishing more as a student athlete and becoming a fine young man, above what he is accomplishing now, then you can win her over. Then, and only then, will it have a chance. The greatest mistake would be to approach Mommy explaining to her how good the Rebel program would be if Johnny were to play with kids at other schools, if she would take him to weight lifting at OC 4-5 nights a week throughout the year, and also get him to OC for practice 5 days a week during season, and then set in the stands while Little Johnny may or may not get to play any even though Little Jimmy got to run the ball in the last game. See my point? Mommy has to know what good will come for Johnny, not the Rebels. I would say this needs to be an all out charge led by the coaches of all sports at OC. Get the basketball coaches on board, the softball coaches, any team sport that is played at both levels. Present a unified front on the advantages of what this combining can do for not just Johnny, but Jill as well. Perhaps the coaches and athletic directors from all the schools should meet and prepare a battle plan. Then meet with the school board and request a survey amongst the jr. high parents in each school to see how much support is available. Campaign. Win those hearts and minds. Not everyone out there is a coach or a guru (contrary to what they think and we are all guilty of that to some degree), so common sense from a football stand point won't get it. Bottom line, if the parents and jr. high staff don't support it, you can cancel Christmas cause it ain't gonna happen.
  3. What coach has stayed long enough to outgrow the program? Hill left to return to Arkansas. Bowling left to go to Dyersburg (for whatever personal reasons). Driggers left to return to Jackson (And I myself did not consider him to be a scrub. He went 0-10 the same as Jackson went 0-10). I look at the set up that is available as of now. I see new equipment out the wazoo, new uniforms, new program pride paraphernalia (New logos, inflatables, etc.) and I think it is all good for the kids. They have great new weights, great indoor facility, new lockers, and he was given the 1st block of the day for football at his request. I would say the program has lots of leeway to evolve as needed. I see plenty of coaches in the ranks. I would guesstimate the player to caoch ratio to be about 10:1. That's pretty darn good. Even baseball doesn't get that ratio.. I see the facilities in excellent condition. Is the only thing left at this point is combining the jr. highs? Jr Rebels District Champs does have a nice sound. But when you have Cougars, Mustangs, Eagles, and Generals spread over the county, Rebel Bowl Champs ain't bad. I remember a Ridgemont team that spanked (and I do mean spanked) everyone in the county. They passed on the Rebel Bowl bid and played in the Tater Bowl, which they also won. I watched another Mustang team defeat Kentucky in the Rotary Bowl, and another beat a Dyer County team in the Iron Eagle Bowl. I know of a Hillcrest Team that spanked everyone they played as well even outside the county, including Union City. I remember Ridgemont defeating 3 Oaks, and 4 years ago a VERY talented Dyer County that got shocked on Rebel Field by the Mustangs. I don't think the problem lies in not having a winning attitude. I'm sure by now that my posts are becoming irritating to you. That's not the intent. My intent is to say that if it's this hard to convince someone straddling the fence, what is going to convince those that stand across the fence. I haven't seen anything yet that sways me to agree with you. I see 2 good points in learning the schemes, and somewhat building unity. I see that offset by numbers losses, the limit of the unity due to other sports, and I still haven't seen the answer on what the primary goal is behind jr. high sports. That, along with the spread of the county schools, still keeps me leaning toward the current set up. To push this agenda is going to require an extensive as campaign that not only defines goals, but gives specifics on how this would improve the kids oppotunities as well as the program. I'm not an easy sell, but I'm still in the market for improvements.
  4. Thank you for your comments. While every team is going to have some issues in those areas, it is very promising to hear positive comments from someone outside the program. Now, how much would it take to buy that little #1 running back you guys have? Good luck to the Chargers!
  5. I don't think anyone in the area is happy with being mediocre at best. There have been some good teams at OC that were far beyond mediocre. The problem IMO is that those teams are the exception, not the norm. Unfortunately, people look at this in reverse. They don't want to change and see if there are any results. They want to see results at the high school level before buying into a change. And until OCCHS has stability in the ranks, very few in the community are going to go along with what the new coach on the block wants to change. People are leery of the "flavor of the month" they are used to seeing. Again, I do not exclude myself. My kid is a senior and plays baseball only now. He is my youngest so I have no personal stake in this, just my Rebel blood.
  6. Question ~ How many other areas (Milan, Crockett, Ripley, Dyersburg, Gibson, Westview, etc) have 4 jr. highs with no middle school before enterring high school? I am curious to find out. Those who know please educate me.
  7. I agree that would have made for a very formiddable team. The jr. highs were full of talent that year. And if these kids were attending a middle school, it would be great. But the fact that they are spread out in 4 different locations, I just don't think it would ever work with the possible exception of combining all the sports from the jr. highs. I read the comments of others talking about building chemistry and the bickering of parents when the kids move to the next level. The kids would still be competing against each other in other sports so the internal competition would remain. Parents are still going to bicker about whose kid gets to play more. I agree that the more time the kids play together, learning one system as a team, can only be to their advantage. I still think you would lose some potential players because of the lack of convenience for practice on the parents part and from kids that have not developed at the rate of others. IMO I don't think the OC numbers would grow from that scenario. If there was a middle school, this would be so easy. But as long as the kids are split at 4 locations, I just have deep doubts that the change would be effective. I would like to see it implemented on a trial basis. Sometimes you just have to pull up your big girl panties and try something new, regardless of what parents get ticked. IMO, they did that when they put in the new dress code. Why should this be different? Obama did it with healthcare! LOL I do have to say though that the school board members should vote the way their district represented wants. If not, someone else will. I would have loved to combined our kids with the other schools that year and see what potential they had. Our kids could have competed with anyone as it was, but to add the cream of each team together would have been awesome to see. However, I'm not sure it would have changed what kids are still playing, or how much better they would be for it. I am still riding the fence looking for a definite advantage to pursue either route. I am not ready to just jump on board because with some and say that it would change the future of Rebel football. Not yet! Our kids put in MUCH hard work prior to Jr. high to get where they were. I wish I had a buck for every eye opener they ran as youth league players. I still remember one mother in particular sitting on top of the hill flashing her headlights at the football field. Each time she did I would add another round! lol Those were great kids and great parents, and definitely great days for me. I wish they were running those drills at the high school level.
  8. Ok, let me touch on part of your argument. Do we really believe that if we combine them at say the 7th grade, that this will make a drastic improvement in the high school team? I don't know about the arguing and bickering as freshmen. My son's group was highly competetive and downright cocky. The whole team was and yet there was no arguing or bickering with the other teams, especially once they got to OC. I think if any aspect of sports is combined that all of them would have to be. Any time there are several schools feeding a program, there is a certain degree of individuality, school pride and spirit. I'm not saying that wouldn't exist with a combined team, just that the combined team wouldn't be as many kids. If I honestly thought that a combined jr. high team would place a more competetive and consistent high school team on the field, without a drastic decrease in participants, I would be all for it. I want what is best for the program 2nd only to what is best for the kids. Now I have no doubt that a combined Jr. High team would be competetive at their level, but you are still getting the same kids when they get to high school. Again, I think it would be great to have a middle school, but with 4 county schools instead,I'm afraid that I am not yet convinced.
  9. I don't think any of the aforementioned coaches left because they had 4 feeder schools instead of a combined team. If a football player gets to high school and doesn't know fundamentals, that isn't because they are not combined with other schools. It is because they haven't had those skills taught, or stressed, during their Jr. High days. That falls back to having teachers coach for the little bit of extra money they get as a coach. The system does not generally hire coaches that can teach in Jr. High, they hire teachers that can coach. Not that that is a bad priority, but just because someone played high school football doesn't mean they will be a good coach either. Considering what teachers and coaches make in this area, it is little wonder that some of them put so little effort into coaching. But I do not see the county coming up with money to pay a coach just to do a combined team. In their defense, the current coaches need what little supplement they are getting to assist with a living. Now, how much coaching supplement is it going to take to get a coach to run a year round program for these kids? And even more importantly, how many of these 12-14 year old kids are going to go to a structured work out program 4-5 days a week year round? I think workouts are great, and I think they are needed. But those 7th and 8th grade kids have much on their plates at that age, and I think the dedication would be lacking. Now, another thing to look at, is size of the players. I look at the difference in size of the OC players as compared to any of our opponents and the OC kids just aren't as big. And that's not from weights, thats from natural growth. Maybe we need to change what we are feeding our kids because they ain't as big. I grant you the weights would help, but we are still undersized. Ponder this though, we have allowed very few sacks this year. We have a good QB with good receivers. So we have a strong and efficient line with a good skill position group. We have a good defensive coach (I am told, as I do not know him), but we keep getting killed by the rushing game. Perhaps, we need to find the best players and put them on the field regardless of whether we are on offense or defense. If you take 11 good athletes and make them offense, then as a player I don't have to be as good as those 11 to make the defense. We want to step up and run our program as advanced as possible. You won't find anyone who wants the Rebel programs to succeed any more than I do. I am REBEL to the bone. But as I asked earlier, should we combine all sports teams? Should we dedicate all resources to football and forget the other sports? What limits do we establish? Now, for a sore spot. How many of the Jr. High coaches are actively involved with the high school program? How many of them should be? ALL OF THEM! I know Lance Gray installed the Veer at Ridgemont to better prepare his kids for OCCHS. And had there not been a coaching change, I'm sure that would have paid great dividends just as what you descibe has happened with Ridgemont running the spread now. But I am also a firm believer that you need as many kids as possible playing at the Jr. High level to have a larger pool at the high school level. I feel the jr. high coaches could be more involved with the high school program, and feel as though they are preparing these kids for what is to come. But they don't have to be combined for this to happen. Now, to play devil's advocate. What is the purpose of jr. high sports programs? Is it to insure the high school has a good team, or is it to teach teamwork, dedication, physical fitness, sportmanship, etc? These are some of the points that have to be addressed to convert the mommies and daddies to see a different point of view. I am still not convinced that combining isn't the good route, but I'm not convinced that it is yet either.
  10. I don't think the Jr. Highs are the biggest problem with the high school program. I do agree that combining the schools into a central team would be advantageous to some degree, in that they would all run the same schemes. They would play a few teams different from what they play now. But I don't believe that putting the teams together for 2 years before reaching high school is the miracle cure for OCCHS. If the schools were combined in a middle school, it would be a no-brainer. But as long as the schools are individual, the teams will be. If this was a cure-all, why wouldn't we also combine the basketball teams, the softball teams, and any other sports they play. I believe the feeder schools supply OCCHS with plenty of quality athletes, which are spread throughout the various sports programs at OCCHS. I look at the numbers on the OC sideline each Friday night, and they look good. But a moderate portion of those didn't play at the lower level. Would they have if the county had been combined? I don't think so in my opinion. I saw the numbers plummet when the youth league was combined. How many Jr. High players would quit if those were combined? Again, IMO there would be quite a few. I have personally hauled kids all over this great state to participate in sports, and I don't mean just mine. Anyone who knows me can attest to that. I have encouraged many a youth to play sports, quite successfully I might add. I have not made up my mind whether I would support combining the schools, but at this time I tend towards not. I know Ridgemont used to play 3 Oaks out of Dyersburg and used to play an always talented Dyer group. They had success against both. I will say that I don't think county teams want to play UC, but not because they can't compete. I can assure you the Ridgemont team my son was on could have competed with any team around. IMO, there is too much bad attitude between the city and county to play at the Jr. High level. Too much "old school" in both systems. Look at the baseball league in UC Babe Ruth. For years the city did not want to combine, nor did the county. When the city numbers dropped way down, then they wanted to combine and it is a reality now. Too many people in this area with long memories, and I don't exclude myself. Now, as far as running the high school schemes at the Jr. High level, that is a tough call. Until OC proves that they have stability within the coaching ranks, that is a wash. I know Ridgemont converted to the Veer under the assurance from Coach Bowling that he was going to be at OC. He left the following season. I am not knocking him leaving, but that is the type of problem I am talking about. Now, convince me of what would have changed with the current OC football team if they had been combined at the Jr. High level? Be specific and be thorough. Convince me to see the other side of the spectrum. I am not committed either way, so I can honestly look at what is presented. I have my own opinions as to what could improve the current team as well as future teams, but combining the Jr. Highs is not yet within my thoughts. Give me a legitimate reason to think differently.
  11. SO, exactly what are you saying? Those that follow the local programs know UC graduated a large senior group. OC graduated a large senior group as I'm sure SF and LC did. Fact remains, you have to suck up in the lean years and take what happens along with the good years. Otherwise, you end up with "fair weather fans" and students who only want to be involved when the team is in the good years. UC may be good the next few years, but in losing Chase I will have to see someone step up big time to fill those shoes. Also, the longer the Veer is run against the same opponents, the better it is defended. I will be interested in seeing how UC does against SF and Lake County in the coming weeks. Sounds like Lake County is using a "B-team" as well. Hope UC does well the rest of the season, but I see a tough road ahead of them, possibly for next year as well. Chase will be hard to replace. Oh, and GO REBELS!!
  12. This should be a great game. Covington is always athletic, and are having a better season than in recent years. Obion County is a good team that has yet to reach their potential. The Rebel defense managed to step it up against Union City, and while the offense was not perfect, they were effective. The Rebels need to bring that same intensity to Covington and realize that the remainder of the season will be magnified in importance. The Rebel's need to learn to put their foot on the opponents throat when they are down and finish off good teams. I like that the Rebels have shown they came come back after being behind but would like to see them set the tone of the game early Friday night by getting out front and having the killer instinct at the end. Covington may be a tough match up for OC as their offense will move the ball. A couple of good stops by the Rebel defense with the offense taking advantage early in the game could make the night more pleasant. I don't expect the Chargers to quit, they never have. But if the Rebels can get up early and force Covington to play catch up, the Rebels will improve their chances for a win. I expect a really good game with an Obion County win by 10. GO REBELS!!
  13. Yes, you're right P&G. I saw the ball spotting in question you are speaking of. That was terrible. And i also thought the Unsportsmanlike Conduct was a 15 yarder with an automatic 1st down. Coach Jackson argued with the official but they left it as it was. I don't think in any way that the officials could be blamed for the outcome of last nights game. Both teams played hard and the Rebels won. I mentioned earlier in the week that the Rebels may have a defensive leader emerge. Not sure what happened, but the run defense was very good last night. Didn't like seeing the corners give up pass coverage and bite on the run, especially when the line and linebackers were handling the run so well. UC had a couple of chances on the pass that they didn't finish on, but so did OC on a couple of drives. I have to say kudos on the strategy of beat me with the pass but not on the run. I felt like OC did a great job against the veer last night. Heard rumor the defensive coach was very familiar with the veer. Overall, good win for the Rebels, regardless of classification. Should be a great confidence booster to win against a team that has dominated the series in the long run, especially a county rival. OC now has a bye week to try and get a bit healthier. Was told Miller had strep throat this week as well as the injuries the others are nursing. Miller is one tough kid. I thought the receivers did well in YAC yards last night. And Fair, well that kid has heart and runs hard. If he had the speed of Haskins, kid would be unstoppable. Congrats to OC and the excellent fan support last night. GO REBELS!!!
  14. I find that a rather lame excuse. The Rebels defense was the difference in the game, not the refs. Downfield cut blocking was the most frequent penalty I saw enforced last night. Perhaps there needs to be a change in technique taught. To imply that the refs cost UC the game is petty and I did not expect that from you.
  15. Should be a great game, with a predominantly run offense against a predominantly pass offense. With both teams having suspect defense against the opponents strength, this has shoot out written all over it. I believe this will come down to whether OC is more successful with their run offense, or UC is able to throw the ball effectively. I do believe the Rebels will come into Friday night with a different attitude than last week. No doubt UC will be pumped up and this game will come down not to conditioning or numbers, but to who is able to sustain momentum. I have a feeling the Rebel defense will have some new fire this week. Perhaps a leader has emerged. Rebels by 6 Go REBELS!!
  16. Wow! Someone is on a rant. Now I do not agree with Coach's comments, but I'm sure he has his reasons be it to ease the pain of the loss or whatever reason he might have. I took his comments to mean he and his coaches thought that, not his players. Either way, I believe he may be the only coach in this county to know how it is to be a college football coach. His methods are just that, his. As far as the inflatable helmet, dude, you've got to be kidding. I'd have my team run out of an inflatable chicken's butt if that helped to motivate them. As a coach I would do whatever it takes. I don't recall this kind of negativity when Coach Bowling changed uniforms at OC or at UC. If they get new unifirms at mid-season it's no one's business outside that program. But, just to clarify this years new gear, OC is now a NIKE team. That means all NIKE uniforms for the team at a nice discount. Myself, I was unaware that you had to be a consistent state champ to get new uniforms. Thank goodness you didn't know about the new weights or new lockers the team got. But, of course I was also unaware that you had to make it deep in the playoffs to make program changes. New coaches, implementing college style football, and generally setting off visiting teams. Is there no end to his audacity!! Alright, enough sarcasm from me. The fact is the man is trying to make a change at OC and improve the program there. I don't hate it for any of the kids. I salute the effort whether I agree with his methods or not aand trust me, I don't agree with all of it. Then again, I don't agree with many people period. I applaud constructive criticism, but not mocking or down talking the methods used. As always, GO REBELS! (By the way, running out of that helmet is a conditioning drill!)
  17. Congrats Cavs on the win over Dyer County. I say Crockett by 17 this week over Haywood.
  18. The Rebels were flat Saturday. I don't know the reason but from the time they walked, and i emphasize WALKED out of the locker room, there was no intensity, no emotion, no fire. The offense looked as though cobwebs should be hanging off them. When they played at home, they came out fired up and ready to play. I did not see anything like that Saturday. Cape Central was big, bigger than Sikeston, but the Rebels were never in the game. The remainder of my post is what I'm observing and my opinion. No knocks on kids whatsoever. The offense was terrible Saturday. From my viewpoint, they were so predictable they never had a chance. It seemed most every pass was a simple 5-7 yard route. Even a poor secondary can cover 7 yards. Fair put out some effort, and what yards he got were hard earned. But he had no hands on the passes. Phipps was again out of synch. Now that may have been his fault as he didn't appear to be stepping into his throws, but I think part of it may have been that the receivers routes were not crisp. You know, if a QB throws the 7 yard out pattern, but the receiver rounds it to a banana route, the connection is off. I just didn't see any chemistry whatsoever from the offense. The defense made some good plays. They fought hard but wore down. Myself, I didn't like the defensive alignment. Corners were 10 yards off the line of scrimmage and still taking drop steps. The flats were open all day for easy passes. The linebackers were so caught up in the run, they weren't picking up anyone out of the backfield. When the QB would roll out of the pocket, there was 20 yards between him and the first defender. Could have been busted coverage, but it happened regularly so I lean more towards alignment. I love seeing the large numbers of kids dressed for the Rebels, but I think you gotta put your best on the field and leave them there. OC is in my opinion a really good team. I agree wholeheartedly they are lacking field leadership. Someone has to step up and be the man on both sides of the ball. The Rebels have a great product to put on the field every game, but something has to pull them together to get them to their potential. For the last 10 years, I have seen every Rebel football game with the exception of a 1 year military stint, and this is one of the best teams I have seen for the Rebels. I sat through the 2 winless years, and I sat through the Coach Hill excitement years. This team has more untapped potential than most. For some reason, they lack confidence and continuity in their play. Find yourselves, and bring your best every play. It's there, show it. Now is when you have to decide whether you're going to be 7-3 or 1-9. My bet is always on the Rebels!! GO OC!

  20. Ah, so you see it too. I talked about how in the Sikeston game the D-line over ran the play and what I feel the D-line needs to do. I say forget the penetration and concentrate on gap control. Passing offenses will not be the killer for the OC defense, but the run will be. Gap control does not give you tackles for a loss, but it can sure minimize those long breakaway runs. The paper had Miller with 24 stops (14 solo) for the Rebs. No way that should happen for a safety. The D-line still needs to step up and make more plays at the line and I just don't see that happening when they have their heads down driving for penetration. With that said, the defense did look much better this week. Glad to see that kind of improvement. The passing game never got in rythym, although Fair looked great in the run game. Appears to me Phipps has to pass often to get his timing and to excel at his game. And that could be a lack of maturity for the junior. The kid has great potential and I hope he has a great season. Crockett didn't look like the #3 team in the state that night. They are still a good team, and they did what they had to for the win. Congrats to the Cavs. But they also have some "fixin" to do to make their presence known in the state this year. Good luck to CC from here on out.
  21. I don't put any stock into his column myself. Maybe it's just me, but I see bias in everything he writes. Now I would agree that Sikeston was not a GREAT team, but they were darn good and quite possibly as good as any OC will see this year. In my opinion, had Sikeston been a one dimensional team OC would have prevailed. Their ability to run and throw from the spread was tough with the new defensive scheme the Rebels are trying to work. It was unexpected I believe and they weren't prepared. As I stated in an earlier post, IF the Rebel corners can play man and allow OC to get 8 or 9 men in the box, they have a chance to win against Crockett. But the linebackers must be disciplined against the crossbuck. I've watched the Cavs run that 15 times in a game against OC and be effective each time. 1 or 2 stops may be all it takes to swipe a victory from the Cavs. Everyone knows they are going to run down your throat and dare you to stop them. I agree with P&G, I would load the box and force you to beat me with the pass. Not saying CC couldn't, but I would force the issue. I love watching Pratt's teams run the Wing-T. So much you can do from that set and the Double wing. Cavs fans, have a safe trip. GO REBELS!!! And you're right P&G, Offense is played on the field as well.
  22. No doubt the Cavs have a very solid run game. CC always puts athletes on the field and offense is always strong. I think this may be somewhat of a shootout Friday night. The Rebels are lacking in run defense and absolutely have to make a defensive adjustment. One starting corner was out last week but will hopefully return tomorrow night which could allow playing man pass coverage and get more defenders in the box. I think the Rebel linebackers are pretty good, but the D-line has to fill some gaps. The OC offense is looking good so far. If the passing game continues on course, it may actually open up the run for some key plays. Sikeston, Mo had a good defense and team speed far above the norm. Hopefully the Rebels can get a few defensive stops and outshoot the Cavs. Looking forward to what I expect to be a closer game than in recent meetings. I say OC 41 CC 38
  23. Milan over Westview Ripley over Gibson County Dyersburg over Covington Obion County over Crockett County in an upset
  24. Sikeston was very impressive. I applaud Coach Jackson for scheduling them. Sikeston had a very balanced attack. They had more team speed than anyone the Rebels will face this season. The OC offense was exciting, and may have pulled off the victory if they could have established the run, but Sikeston was so quick to the ball that they shut it down. Very impressed with the Rebel offensive line in not allowing any sacks, and very few pressures. Phipps had time to find the receivers and that aspect looked good. As for the defense, yes they have much work to do. Hopefully normal starter Garland will return this week at cornerback to shore up the pass defense, but against Crockett County the defensive line will have to stand their ground. The Rebel linebackers did a good job against the Bulldogs but there were still several missed tackles. There were a couple of sack opportunities for the Rebel D-line where they simply over ran the play. Each team only punted once in the game. No loss is ever good in my book, but overall I liked what I saw from the Rebels. There was no quit in those boys and I for one think that is an extreme turnaround from the last few years. If OC can keep up the intensity, they might very well be back in the playoffs this year. I truly do not see any other team on their schedule that will be as talented, athletic and disciplined as Sikeston was. Westview may be as balanced as Sikeston, but I don't think they will be a better team. The Rebel linebackers had better be able to cross-read the backs for this week, as Crockett loves the crossbuck out of their Wing set. With a little used pass attack by Crockett, perhaps the Rebel D-line should play gap control this week and not focus on penetration. Gap control can minimize the run game better than penetration for the Rebels at this point. Congrats to Sikeston on a great team and great game. Rebels, keep those heads high. You're looking good despite the loss. GO REBELS!!!
  25. Anyone have any info on how the scrimmage went?
