Sommers Yes a wrestler can get hurt by another wrestler. So lets just stop all wrestling. All should just face the fact "Girl wrestlers are Staying" The TSSAA doesnt seperate them, and they cant make them quit. The coaches cant stop them from trying out. Even if the TSSAA made a girls group they would still be wrestling boys till that started. Then USA wrestling put the two togather. Then AAU wrestling puts them togather. The Nation Federation Of State High Schools puts them togather.( I see a pattern here) The TSSAA rule book does not say wrestling is a boys only sport nor does the NFSHS rules. Again a girls group would be nice but I dont belive that can happen at this time. But I also belive the girls should NOT have to set out untill a program is in place. I also see your last statement as some weak effort to influnce girls that may try to wrestle in the future. If not why would you post it on all the Girl wrestlers forms? Michael Morelan

SLY, I have seen 12 different girl wrestlers so far this year. I do not remember exactly what schools they were from. Here is my guess, McMinn Central 2 Seymore 1 Ooltewah 1 Rea 1 or 2 Sequoyah 1 or 2 Morristown? 2 Marion/Grundy 2 ????? 2 The TSSAA didnt seperate the girls from the boys in reporting to the National Federation of State High Schools. So they are all counted the same. The NFSHS also stated about the increase of girls wrestling, but they didn't treat them any different. Even with several states not taking the girls count out of the boys, the NFSHS has over 3,600 girls wrestling nationwide. Michael Morelan

Altho I haven't seen all the girls that are wrestlers. I belive Amber Wilson(Seymore) is the best girl at this time. Amber might be about 135lbs(not sure). Kristi Sweat was a good wrestler, she made Sports Illustrated. (how many other wrestlers from Tennessee has done that) Also Cumberland had a girl that wrestled years ago but I cant remember her name. FludDanzr21 Miranda is my daughter. and I am proud of what she does. I attend ever partice and I have never missed one of her matches. I also attend my sons pratices and miss only one of his matches. (he is long out of highschool) She wants to wrestle, and at this time she has only one option in school to wrestle. I am sure if the TSSAA does a girls group we will be their. As for wrestling I do not know all, and I am learning more day to day. Again I am her to support my daughter. This is whats she want to do. I do not see a "easy" answer for this. But I do not see her quitting this sport. Nor do I see some other of the girls that are wrestling quitting. Michael Morelan

twhoops,, just the world with Title IX. My daughter is a wrestler on a boys highschool team, altho I dont know all I do know a small amount about Title IX. Michael Morelan

I do not disagree with CoachGonyea.. BUT, This cannot be setteled here. The TSSAA will have to do that. Then we will have Division I, Division II and Girls.. But what after that? shall we break it down by school size? % body fat? hair color? Private or Public schools ,,oops done that....(yes extreme ). USA wrestling does not seperate the kids. AAU wrestling does not seperate the kids. Only two states seperate them. and they did that with the starting of the girls programs. Start the girls programs, but untill that they wrestle. If the school has a sport that does not have the same sport for the other gender. Boys and both Girls can play.. Football and Wrestling come to mind. Michael Morelan

Sly, Just think how wrestling would be in Judie Foudy had been a wrestler. Of just if the wrestling community had welcome her in her youth. What is TSSAA opining on this? Can a Tennessee Highschool coach refuse a girl? Michael Morelan

Sly.. you are correct, McMinn Central has struggled for some time. We have went from 4 wrestlers to 23 this year. We have new coaching (Brian Gossett). We have went from praticing in a condemned gym to praticing on the school grounds. In fact the kids were only able to pratice two to three days a week last year. At this time 18 of our kids havent wrestled before this season. We have started a feeder program and plan to visit the local grammer schools to help inform future wrestlers. Some of our kids wrestled AAU and that helped a lot,, Al miller in Cleveland treated us nice with the USA wrestling. I see any people that want to wrestle as a inprovement. I also see that if we dont get people involved in this sport it will slowly die. As for Miranda she wrestles because she likes the sport. I have asked her would like to do another sport at this time and she refuses. She playes soccor and does track but in her mind she is a wrestler and I have to support her in that belief. I belive the more women/girls that wrestle will save the sport. Women wrestling is growing. Support all who wrestle. I would be nice if the trouble wrestling is having with Title nine was helped by the influx of women wrestlers. Michael Morelan
