  1. In 2001, Franklin defeated Brentwood to finish 2nd in 11-AAA and advance to the regionals. In the opening round of the regionals, Hunters Lane defeated Franklin and Overton defeated Antioch. In the Regional championship game, Sara Hickerson and Amber Steen were locked in a 0-0 pitcher's duel through 6 innings. Overton scored 3 unearned runs in the top of the 7th and went on to win 3-0. Overton then defeated Lavergne to advance to the state. Hunters Lane lost to Beech in the sub-state. [Edited by fpjunkie on 1-30-03 9:20P]
  2. Just heard last night that "Business Unusual" has been cancelled by CNN. The Club K segment was reportedly finished and ready to air, so maybe Club K will be able to get a tape from the network.
  3. I talked to someone at Club K today. It has been postponed. Should show sometime in January.
  4. This Sunday, 12/22, at 2:00 CST, Club K will be featured on the CNN show "Business Unusual". It should be an interesting show with a lot of local softball players making an appearance on national TV.
  5. Not sure about Whitwell, but at Mississippi State she was known as Flash.

    FIREBIRDS

The last I heard they were looking for one outfielder, but of course roster changes sometimes take place during the off season. I do know that they have two extremely strong catchers. If you want to contact them, there is a notice on the bulletin board at Club K which contains contact information. Hope this helps.

Just read on UT's web site that Ashley Cline of Gallatin High School and the Wild Things travel team has signed early to be a lady Vol. Congratulations and best of luck to a great softball player! [Edited by fpjunkie on 11-19-02 11:43P]
  9. This proposal has been kicked around for several years. I don't know what NFCA would have to do with it, other than possibly lobbying, since they are a coach's association. The change would have to come from ASA, NSA, TSSAA, etc. It was presented last week at the ASA Council and was defeated. One of the primary reasons is that ASA must remain consistent with the ISF (International Softball Federation) which is still at 40 feet. I think it would be a terrible proposal for high school. While it might make the few dominating pitchers a little less dominating, I believe it would have an even greater effect on the many pitchers who are not so dominating. (I fear that many games would closely resemble slow pitch games.) Another problem is that high schools often have pitchers as young as the eighth grade. (The ASA proposal would have applied only to 18U A and Gold.) I don't think there is any chance TSSAA will make that change unless ASA eventually does, and even then I would be very surprised.
  10. There are a number of bats, including 6 from Worth, which were ruled illegal at the end of July of this year. One of the bats is the 3DX. However, you should note that Worth makes several bats which include "3DX" in the model number. The one which is illegal is simply "3DX", not "3DX Fastpitch" which is what I have seen girls around here using. The 3DX which is banned, along with the other 5 Worth bats which were banned, are all slow pitch bats. To see a list, go to www.softball.org, then click on site map, certified equipment, and bats. If you happen to have a bat that is on the banned list, you can send it back to Worth for recertification. For instructions, go to www.worthsports.com. Hope this helps.
  11. Overton will host the Bobcat Classic at Cain Ridge Park on March 28-29. For more information contact Coach Corene Minchin at (615)333-5151.
  12. What is up with one team having 9 all district players? Boy that sure seems wrong. Are there not many teams in that district? The district has 8 teams, 6 of which are pretty competitive. The team with 9 all district players won the district, but the team which won in 2001 only had 3 all districts in 2001. The selections are kept very quiet. I did not know about the nine players until it was posted earlier in this thread, but I know who posted it and he is certainly someone who should know, so I feel like that should be accurate.
  13. Maybe they shouldn't even have these honors if they don't know how to choose them and then don't even regonize them. The other districts do not seem to have these problems but I may be talking to the wrong people. I know of their girls who were chosen and they did a good job in selecting them. I don't know who you have been talking to, but I can assure you that at least some other districts have similar problems. I know of one team that had 9 all-district players, and yet the pitcher who gave them their only district loss, had a 7-0 district W/L record and batting average over .500 was not selected. I suspect there are many other similar examples from this district, as well as other districts. I agree that batting average alone is a pretty weak criteria, especially considering how some teams pad their statistics by creative scorekeeping, but at least there was a criteria. As this thread clearly indicates, very few people know who was selected, the criteria used, or how to find out this information. "Maybe they shouldn't even have these honors if they don't know how to choose them..." I couldn't agree more!
  14. Did Brentwood really have 9 players to make All District? Impressive for a team who did not make it to the state tournament.
  15. As the father of a pitcher, I can tell you that the color of the ball does not matter near as much to most pitchers as the seams. The worst seams we have found on any balls are the KMasters which are used by TSSAA. The fine thread in the seams cuts into a pitcher's fingers when she throws breaking balls. During high school season, we don't go to the field without taking along some NuSkin. Does anyone know a way to persuade TSSAA to change balls? Worth has two other balls, the Dream Seam and the Red Dot, that are great.
