  1. Mechanical devices (i.e. powered devices) and pyro devices are not allowed. Milk jugs filled with rocks, hand held air horns, cowbells are acceptable. I would suggest that the truck horn is over the line but that is why we have game administrators. A head coach can use a timeout to request a meeting with the game administrator to deal with any distractions including unruly fans and noisemakers.
  2. The rules are already in place... all a coach has to do is call a timeout and tell the white hat to stop the game and call the game administrator. The action must begin with one or both of the head coaches and it then becomes the game administrator's responsibility to remove the noise maker from the stadium. I have seen this done and it is as simple as stopping the game until the distraction is removed.
  3. Over the last 15 years the limitations on tackling has changed football. You can't use the facemask or helmet in the tackling technique. It does require more fundamental drills to perfect but it doesn't have to be full speed at the HS level. Most HS drills are done at 3/4 speed. You are teaching and developing motor skills. It can be built into a weekly practice schedule using a combination of one man sleds, Tackling dummies and 3/4 speed angle tackle drills.
  4. Good luck Lions, down the road. Hard fought game last night.
  5. We don't need to wake a sleeping dog! Our team is hungry for a win, we came close last Friday in overtime! But we don't need Butchie firing up the Lions. They looked good last Thursday night at Westview.
  6. Digger, the only thing we have is an occasional rebroadcast of games on the Christian Music Station (Milan-Trenton). They will cover some games for area schools and play them back on Saturday morning. I don't think Paul Tinkle's station is broadcasting the game this year but I would check with him in Martin to find out for sure. Just buy a ticket and make the short drive to Dyer. You can eat at one of our fine two eateries or but a hamburger at the concession stand.
  7. Same back to you coach! I enjoyed the breakfast and conversation on and off the radio Saturday morning. Hope this week I can make it back up there again. We're playing straight up iron-man football with only 36 boys on the team and 8 of them going both ways. We only run about five plays so your staff doesn't need to spend much time today in your coaches meeting! You boys take it easy on us in the second half and rest your starters for district play. You need to rest that big Y-TE too as much as possible. We don't have anyone who can block him or guard him on defense! Hope you bring about 500 or more with you this Friday. Maybe we can give you a little bit of competition and no one will get hurt! We have Milan the following week and we need all of our starters back for our first district contest!
  8. Tickets are now on-sale at each of the local schools. If you buy in advance, most of that money goes back to your local programs plus you save $2 per ticket from purchasing them at the gate. Driving from Madison County come SOUTH on 45W. Team buses should use the 'back entrance' off the bypass and all others should turn right at the 4-way between Trenton and Dyer on the Dyer HWY and enter at the front of the school. Parking will be available in front and behind the school, on the football and band parking lots. Teams may warmup on the baseball and softball fields. We anticipate a huge crowd like last year so come early and get a seat.
  9. After 15 minutes of stretching and agilities with the heat index at 105 or above, you will only have about thirty-five to forty minutes of real contact football drills before the brain starts to shut down and whatever you said to the players becomes meaningless. Yes, the human body can acclimate over time but young boys in the first week of full contact with pads will not. Even our best athletes have problems in the heat and the big linemen are effected even quicker. If you can stretch indoors and do some agility work inside, do that, then transition outside for an hour of work if you can. I would suggest that Coach Quarles and the Rebels will beat 90% of the teams they play.
  10. I used to conduct three-a-days and didn't pay much attention to the heat. One year we had five boys in the emergency room at the same time for heat related illnesses. After that day, I began to check the heat index and have been very sensitive to it. As a head coach, AD or principal, we all have to be weary of placing our selves or our programs in a position of being negligible before the courts. JUST BECAUSE WE USED TO DO SOMETHING A CERTAIN WAY DOES NOT MEAN IT IS WISE OR CORRECT! When I was young, I drove to fast! Now, I probably drive too slow but at least I no longer get tickets for irresponsible behavior. Coaches must protect their players and coaches from the heat. An assistant football coach died in TEXAS this past week because of the heat. Every year across America heat related deaths occur in football during August. Be smart, follow the rules, even when your competitors do not. Protect yourself from criminal and civil negligence! Yes, you can lose your job and go before a criminal jury for negligent homicide! It happened in Kentucky in 2008. Play smart and work hard but don't let heat end your career or some kids life! We use weather.com to check the temperature (heat index) projection to plan in advance of our daily practice routine. Accordingly, we push back the start of practice to whatever time is necessary. Last night, we worked in GYM for three hours.

  16. Are you boys still going to 'chunk it around' this year or go back to the running game?
  17. We still need two more teams... if not, this could become a three or four way scrimmage
  18. We still need two more teams... if not, this could become a three or four way scrimmage
  19. Proposed format (subject to change) is as follows: * One hour scrimmage game for each team with running clock. * Water break every 15 minutes. * A minimum of three referees per game. * No special teams except for two point conversions. Ball placed in play on the 35 yard line. Declare punt on 4th down until you pass your opponents 40 yard line. Inside the 40, four downs only (without declaring a punt) * Coaches may be on the field behind the offensive line-of-scrimmage with one defensive coach deep in the secondary. The games will start around 6:30 (IF the heat index allows) and the final scrimmage should end around 9:45 PM. The baseball and softball fields will be available for teams to stretch and warm-up. One extra locker room will be available on a limited basis but all equipment and personal belongings will have to be kept on the bus or sidelines during the scrimmages.
  20. Mr. Dillard: This is just a one hour scrimmage in Northwest TN. I'm sure no one from Southern Middle TN will want to drive this far for a scrimmage. Good luck to your team in 2011 but I doubt they need any luck.

  23. Obviously, this post is a joke, probably written by a senior or soccer player. The player mentioned is an offensive lineman. My guess is our former QB is the author, it sounds like his handy work. These boys are working hard in the weight room but no one on the team has any illusions, every game will be an uphill battle and no one is on any preseason list for anything. District games include South Gibson, Milan, Westview, Crockett Co, Dyersburg, Obion Co. Central and Covington. We will have a small offensive line and about 40 players.
