  1. veerman8133, I can understand your point of view and I appreciate it. But my point is that I hate when people get on here and spout off when they have no personnel knowledge of a situation. I could pontificate on several schools situation but I don't know the ins and outs of those programs. I've got no problem trying to promote someone who you think would be good for the job, but to question the previous coach or the administration's commitment to a successful program just rubs me the wrong way. If I were to say anything, I try to say it in a manner that speaks of facts, not rumors or half truths. But these discussions always come down to bashing or denigrating a coach. I have coached from semi-pro down to youth league and I will never attack the effort or sincerity of a coach. I truly appreciate what high school coaches do. There are other programs in the area that haven't been the most successful, but I would never talk about the effort, sincerity, or motivation of a player or coach because it takes certain type of person to play or coach football. It takes dedication and I applaud each and every player and coach that makes that commitment.
  2. Well since you aren't concerned with Gibbs, I sure can't tell because you seem to have all the answers when it comes to Gibbs and its football program. If you aren't concerned with Gibbs then way do you care if they do well or not? Since you aren't concerned, find another thread. From your comments, you don't know the situation at Gibbs. You see, most people lose sight of what a high school coach is. He is there first to teach, then coach. Last I can recall, football is an extracurricular activity. Next, in the big scheme of things, high school coaches should be more concerned with building young men and women first. Thats the problem with society, everybody is consumed with winning and they forget about the competition, and the life skills that can be learned from sport. I see in youth sports and all the way up that many people just want to win and forget that these are young men that require molding and character building. I am a product of the Gibbs football system and we won when I was there. The circumstances were different then in terms of kids and expectations and parents. I played for Randy Carroll and learned so much from being on that field with him. I learned discipline, perseverance, hard work, and so much more from my parents, but Randy Carroll reinforced all those concepts for me when I was in a Gibbs uniform. But the only thing outsiders see is w's and l's and rumors about a program or school or a coach. That's why I never make comments about other schools in regards to coaches or players because I don't know everything about a school, team, or coach. In closing, the administration will do the right thing.
  3. Coach1076, since you know all the ins and out of hiring a coaching staff, where exactly did you coach and what are your qualifications? Thats what I love about the internet, most of this crap is spouted off by people who couldn't even coach a team on Madden 07. I don't think any of you are getting paid to make that decision or even have a vested interested in what is going on at Gibbs....but you sure do have all the answers.
  4. I have heard the same thing. Seems like it's a done deal, just letting the ink dry.

  7. Just wondering if there are any websites dedicated to high school basketball teams. There seems to be several dedicated to football. If you know of any, let me know.
  8. I can't really agree with that statement. I believe that you would see the level of football increase across the board with the reinstatement of middle school football. The feeder programs (neighborhood youth programs) are not usually run like they really should be and coaches don't have the training in terms of practice planning, game planning, running schemes that fit ages, etc. It's nothing worse to me than seeing a youth coach stretch and then start running plays for 2 hours with no individual time for instruction. Also I've seen it a million times, a youth coach trying to conduct practice and there are the parents yelling from the sideline interrupting practice. As an example, there wasn't middle school football, but I played freshman football as an 8th and 9th grader. I went on to start varsity, both ways, for 3 years, earned some honors, played small college football. I firmly believe that I was prepared as a sophomore because I played 8th & 9th grade years for the same coaches that coached the varsity on Friday night. Ran the same drills, learned the same plays and terminology, etc. Kids today, play 8th grade ball in the youth league for a group of daddies that sometimes aren't the best prepared and then are expected to relearn football to some extent from a totally new set of coaches. I know several head and assistant coaches in the area, and most have told me that the existing situation in Knox County is a hindrance. Don't get me wrong, I coach and have been an administrator at the youth level and I commend everyone who volunteers. But thats just it, most are volunteers that lead lives outside of their youth program and many times do not have the time or resources to truly build a competitive and teaching environment on the field. Then there is the parent issue. If kids play under the youth league team then most parents feel that just because I paid money for my child to be on the team then he should play. But if the same child is on a middle school team, that parent is usually more rational in terms of what it takes to be on the team. The culture is not I play because I paid, it's I have to be good to be on the team and earn playing time. In addition, I've seen coaches who coach youth ball play kids "because they paid to play". Last, I think that what you are seeing is a cycle in terms of talent here in the Knoxville area. I think there are just better athletes right now than there was 10-12 years ago. Knoxville had a surge of talent in the late 70's and early 80's that somewhat dried up in the late 80's-mid 90's. Actually, thats part of the problem. When I played, you played where you went to school and were zoned for. Now parents all think their child is going to be the next Peyton Manning, feed their child the same crap, and will move, lie or cheat in order for their child to play high school athletics. Anyway, just my 2 pennies worth. I just love prep football. What's the best game to see this weekend? I'm leaning toward AE/Catholic.
  9. That's what is so beautiful about sports. Sometimes you have to fight the giant to grow and get better. Do you think that Appalachian State went to Michigan thinking defeat? For all its worth, Michigan should have beat them handily. Even with App State being the quality program they are, if you ask any fan, Michigan has the upper hand in every aspect from facilities, to tradition, to athletes. But they went to Michigan and defeated them. By your logic, they shouldn't have even gotten on a plane to go up there. No one wants to lose any game, but to say that a team doesn't want an opportunity to make the playoffs because of who their opponent would be is just crazy. As I stated before, some of my most memorable games were against so called unbeatable teams or games in which I was a distinct underdog. In addition, if you're walking into a game looking to be humiliated or thinking you will lose, you already have been.
  10. Well in my opinion, I think it is an asinine statement because every team strives to make the playoffs, no matter what. In fact, if a team does feel that way, then why do you even put on the pads? The greatest games I was ever involved in were against unbeatable teams that we either defeated or played the best we could. But to question if a team wanted to lose because of the next opponent is perhaps the most absurd statement that I have read on one of these boards.
  11. HATS OFF TO SCOTT I am very disappointed in the outcome of the game because my Eagles got out toughed this evening. If Scott plays with that type of attitude all season, they will create problems for some teams. Good luck Highlanders I hope that this game will awaken my Eagles to realize what can happen when you play with pride and heart. Continue to work hard Eagles. Take this defeat and use it as a tool to make this season special. 8 games remain. 8 opportunities to make it a special year. 8 times to come out and play with pride. Continue to work hard. Union County is up next. A great rival that will be prepared to battle. Have a great week of practice. GO EAGLES!
  12. BTW, it was 3-8. Anyway, hats off to a solid Cosby team, I think they will make some noise this season. I was impressed by their size and speed. Don't get me wrong, I didn't think we would run roughshod over them, I knew they had some athletes, but I was very impress with their team and coaching staff. They will do well this season.
  13. This the one game on our schedule that I hope we get rid of. First, I hate the drive there when we have to travel, but next, it's amazing how Scott tends to look down there nose at Gibbs when they are no better than we are. We have practically the same record over the last 5 or 6 years. The games between the schools have been well contested the past few years and its always a few plays that turn the game. Trust me, those Scott wins could have very well been Gibbs victories were it not for a play or two. In regards to non-region play the last couple of years, Scott has played York Institute, Oliver Springs, & Taft Youth Center in addition to Gibbs. Not the strongest non region schedule. While we have played Halls, South-Doyle, & CAK in addition to Scott. Every year I continue to read this board and hear how Scott is going to be great, but they still end up with the same results. As for Scott's chances in our region, I believe they would find it a bit more difficult than they believe it to be. Carter, Seymour are both solid, quality programs. Claiborne, Rutledge, Gibbs, Union County are competitive within the region and Pigeon Forge just needs some stability to be a quality program and rebound from a very disappointing season last year. I know it's not region 2-AAA, but it wouldn't be a cakewalk for Scott either. I hope both teams play well but I don't see Scott running all over the Eagles. Gibbs 24 Scott 17
