  1. Do you have a name for it then? Please give me a name for it so I can go outside and clear my head as you suggest. Here is what the bylaws call it: " 1. Children of full-time faculty members may be given financial aid, but such students, if transfers, shall be ineligible for 12 months in any sport in which they have an athletic record for the previous or current year." Do you have a name for it, besides illegal?
  2. I see your points. I guess it really is how you read it and my reading (which of course doesn't count!) is that there was financial aid given to a faculty child and that faculty member was not full time, but part time. Section 16 says that, if tuition is charged, it must be paid by the parent. Then the rule goes on to say in 1. that children of full time faculty members may be given "financial aid", which can be interpreted as the tuition remission which was granted in this case. Again, the problem for me is in the part time teacher receiving the benefits of a full time faculty member, which the rule clearly stipulates against. There is inherent contradiction in the definition of "financial aid". The rule states that DI schools may not give "financial aid", unless the recepient is a child of a full time faculty member. That implies that tuition remission is "financial aid". Seems there needs to be another term used here, because the rule then goes on to say that all "financial aid" must be "need based". DII schools jump through a bunch of hoops to document and prove financial grants do not exceed need. If they do, that athlete can not play varsity sports. However, neither DI nor DII schools who have children of full time faculty members have to document anything in that area. My bet is that this rule will be seriously clarified when the new edition of the bylaws rolls out in the Fall of '08, and the "frequently asked questions" section will once again grow.
  3. Sorry I have not waded through all the current posts on this topic, but could someone comment on the following: Tuition and Financial Aid Section 16. If tuition is charged, it must be paid by parent, bona fide guardian or other family member. If a parent, guardian or other family member secures a loan for payment of tuition, it must remain an obligation of the parents, guardian or other family member to repay the principle and interest in full with no exceptions. Financial aid will be allowed under the following conditions: 1. Children of full-time faculty members may be given financial aid, but such students, if transfers, shall be ineligible for 12 months in any sport in which they have an athletic record for the previous or current year. How is it that, after this issue was investigated thoroughly, it was not considered a violation that a part time coach was given tuition remission for two family members? I could understand if it was a full time faculty member, but for a part time faculty member to be given tuition remission seems a blatant violation.
  4. Can't imagine the "death penalty". That would really penalize the 10 schools contracted to play football against Temple starting August 24.
  5. Huh? Stop hatin on Temple and just get with reality. Your personal grudge is not that important in the scheme of things. The issue about public/private/DII has been going on far longer than Silverdale has been in existence.
  6. Temple's problems have nothing to do with any movement toward a total split. The ground swell has been there for a long time. Every single DII school, plus most public schools favor the split. That was the strong majority vote last time around and it was ignored by the B of C. It won't be ignored this time around.
  7. What about their Moore County Jamboree--anyone have a schedule?
  8. August 24 SAS @ Temple Should be interesting to see what happens when all the talking is over.
  9. I think you hit the nail on the head---- After all, Daddy Skogen is in it for his boys and he will see to it that they get their glowing stats against inferior opponents, no matter how many of his bench kids sit and no matter how much rummbling is going on in the stands from parents. It's all about the stats, baby. Always helps to have Daddy be your coach.
  10. They don't have enough players--at least last year they played 8 man most of the time. They used to play DIIA, and are still technically in it and maybe not competing in the playoffs. Having to travel to Memphis about killed them I think.
  11. What TSSAA rules are giving him a problem?
  12. Board of Control is going to decide next week if DII will have 2 classes in basketball, baseball, softball and soccer. Word is that if they go with this, then at least 5 DI's in Nash will hop over. Who has heard anything--who has hunches---any word out there?
  13. The DII Middle Region coaches are freaked about secrecy----they do not trust the coaches in the other regions that is why they won't post anything
  14. Once again, another enlightened comment on DII. How do these guys get published????? Richard Cowan , CAK AD says "I can't speak for the school, but my gut feeling is we would give the multiplier a try," he said. "I don't think our mission as a school is to be an athletic scholarship school. Knoxville News-Sentinal Wednesday story : http://www.knoxnews.com/kns/high_school/ar...2645392,00.html
  15. A proposal has been submitted to the Board of Control by the DII Committee, endorsed by all DII schools, that 2 classes be created for basketball, baseball, soccer and softball. This creates a much more competitive atmosphere for the small schools in DII. The proposal might be discussed at the special February meeting, but will probably be decided one way or another by the March meeting. If passed, would some DI privates jump?
  16. Oneida, these guys are living this week to knock you in the mouth. They gonna be pumped up and so you better be ready for a big quarterback who can throw and run and a big fast back. Neither one of them, and none of the rest of their roster, has any fear of you at all.
  17. Given the amount of "workstudy" Boyd doles out, they should be in D2 playing Baylor on a regular basis. Baylor in a runaway.
  18. Fully agree ---- no DII coach of any sport, much less football, wants anything other than plan 3 is my opinion. We will see proof of that, I am sure, when all the Heads and AD's of DII meet at BGA next week to run through all of this. Plan 3- a total split- gives , what is currently a decent division, real legitimacy in terms of numbers and competition at the A and AA level. It allows school whose missions include financial aid to be true to themselves. It is the ONLY solution to the problem---any other plan allows too much room for doubt- mistrust- and finally, further controversy. [Edited by BiggestElk on 5-1-03 9:16P]
  19. Great work, Indian. I think your model is what we are going to end up with, +/-. The DII Heads/ADs are meeting in May to give their recommendation to TSSAA staff and my bet is that it will be close to what Indian has laid out. I think TSSAA will listen and accomodate because there is no going back at this point.
  20. Looks like we got a hot one going here. Back to the article, the writers interpretive statement following the MBA coaches quote is even more puzzling than the sore loser's quote itself. "Translation: They wanted it more than we did." Say what? I missed that translation all together. Interesting how no one has leaped to the defense, isn't it?
  21. Sore Loser? After his team had lost the Doug Hall Relays to BA on Saturday, the MBA head coach says in the Tennessean, "Sometimes luck and superstition win out over skill and science". What is that about? How about congrats to a fine team that just outran our team?
  22. "only thing I can think of is they are afraid to go out and start their own organization" There are lots of reasons DII just doesn't form their own organization, but "afraid" doesn't really define it. How about: 1. Expense to start up a new organization 2. Time commitment involved in starting up a new organization 3. Leadership needed to start a new organization Who has the money, time , energy? Who is or where is the acknowledged leader that will pull it all together? Pragmatics dictate---not fear.
  23. Give us some times to back up your claims---- Is there anywhere to be found a legit state list- say a top 10 in each event?
