  1. You're right. Brain locked up. By the way, no DII schools give athletic scholarships. It's financial aid for any student. Wonder how not giveing financial aid meshes with these Catholic school's mission statements.
  2. What happens to those 18 athletes on financial aid? Can they accept the aid and be forced not to play sports? Can they take aid at another DII school and play without sitting out a year? Or go to a DI school and play immediately? I find it interesting that the two Catholic schools in Chattanooga elected to stop giving financial aid.
  3. Harding Academy in Nashville is the host for the 2004 Chuck Barbee Army Wrestling Clinic. Held in two separate gyms under the same roof, the clinic will be able to segregate the wrestlers based on their skill levels. This will allow the clinicians to tailor their instruction to the participant's wrestling knowledge. LIMITED to 50 wrestlers in the experienced camp and 60 wrestlers in the inexperienced camp, the small size allows for personalized interaction and assures the wrestlers of quality individual instruction. Clinicians include West Point head coach CHUCK BARBEE, Army assistant and former Navy wrestler MIKE CLAYTON, 2X All American Army Senior PHILLIP SIMPSON, West Point 141 pounder PATRICK SIMPSON, Dickson County coach TOMMY BADON, Overton coach RALPH GABRIEL, Ensworth coach JOHNNY RICH, Father Ryan coaches PAT SIMPSON and STEPHEN SHONE, MBA coach FRANK SIMPSON, 2000 Southern Conference Heavyweight Champion KEVIN BALTZ, and TSSAA Referee JIM SIMPSON. Friday evening, September 24, 5-8 Saturday, September 25, 9-4. Bring your lunch, drinks will be provided. Preregistration is a must since space is limited. E-mail gorhamdent@aol.com or call 615-327-4914 if you need me to snail mail or fax you a brochure. The cost is $60.
  4. Just a quick note to let you know that the dates for the Army Wrestling Camp at Harding Academy in Nashville have been set. September 24-25. More info later.
  5. Yeah, that's who I want teaching my kids. 3 failed drug tests, 3 kids out of wedlock by three different women, wants to travel the world (wonder who's watching the children). Great running back but off the field I have no use or respect for him. Maybe he'll right the ship but he has a long way to go.
  6. Has McCallie set their date yet?
  7. You know, that really was a HUGE accomplishment for Leen. Not many folks outside of TN gave him much of a chance, or even heard of him. Gomez is highly thought of, ranked as the 13th best recruit coming out this year in any weight class by Intermat. Thank you matfan for the recap. Leen joins a very impressive list of former champions. On a seperate note, I would have liked to have seen how James would have done at a very tough 19. Garvin from AL also had a nice showing, losing in the semi's to the eventual champion and finishing third.
  8. "The score was 3-0 over Joe Gomez the #1 seed from Illinois!!! I believe this is Tennessee's First Senior National Champion!!!" Great tournament for Leen. Most had Illinois signee Gomez winning by a major. Tennessee as a whole did well, with Manley one match away from AA also. I may be wrong, but didn't McTorry win this a while back to become the first Tennessean to do so?
  9. bballer, you need to stick to the courts because you have no idea what you are talking about. Cornell, while a fine program, is no more a top 5 team than UTC is. In the NCAAs last year they were top 20. They are ranked maybe 15 this year going in. They will probably take 3rd at the EIWAs, one slot ahead of Navy. Navy and Cornell are in the same league, with Navy holding an 18-7 dual match winning record. Cornell has been better the last few years. Historically, Navy is better. Both teams wrestle the same "big boys." Another thing-where is Leen going to fit in Cornell's lineup next year? They are solid at 125, though I don't think he could make it down. 133 would seem logical, but Cornell has a NCAA champion returning there and two highly thought of recruits visiting. 141 might be the best bet, but it's also the most crowded weight with a soph. starter and 4 pretty good freshman. He's not big enough to go 149 yet. Hey, Leen will do fine with time. Let him have it. Nobody, however, is "sure fire" at that level.
  10. Thanks, I did. To answer the question, coach Welder was 1993 USA Jr Greco champ and 1994 USA FILA Jr World Greco camp. That's what he's in there for. I'm guessing the summers after his Jr and Sr years in HS? Started for Nebraska in 97 and 98 for sure and went to the NCAAs. Did not AA but looked like he had a couple of nice seasons. How does a North Dakota/Nebraska boy end up in Nashville? Anyway, being a young pup, he should be able to really push those guys.
  11. Ryan Scott gave up 15 plus. Hey, here'e an idea. Let the guy coach HIS team. Best man doesn't OWN squat if you wrestle for me, and my team (and parents) knows it. I set the line-up, period. If you don't like his calls, don't wrestle for him. He has explained himself, which I didn't expect and I wouldn't do, and asked you to cantact him if you have any questions. I see no point in beating this thing to death.
  12. The refs can't win. If they call it they get razzed, if they don't they get razzed. I believe we are fortunate to have the qulity of refs we have here in Tennessee. I view, rightly or wrongly, stalling like the strike zone in baseball. Study the refs and know how they call. Know if he gives you the inside of the plate or the corner. Know if you get so-and-so that you better not ride the hips. Know ref B will hit you quick if you don't hussle back. I have no problem, and I don't think you do either, identifying the ones that call it tight and the ones that don't and what compells them to do so. It's an age old arguement at every level and it will always be. Find a way to use it to your advantage.
  13. My picks are the usual suspects. DI -Bradley. Reload better than anyone. First untill someone knocks them off. -Franklin. Pretty much loaded now and will only get better with a lot of young talent. -Soddy. Loses a bunch but what they have will be coached up by the end. -Science Hill. May be a year away from fourth. -Clarksville. Full house. -Collierville and Overton. Toss up. DII McCallie. Too many horses back Baylor. Reloads well. MBA. Very young this year. The Irish. Ryan loses a lot and Notre Dame has a lot back. I favor the purple by a pint. CBHS. Tough to replace what they are losing. As usual, summer work will separate the pack somewhat. I look forward to the day that it's not the usual suspects.
  14. Mark Garfinkel and Scott Garfinkel, early 80's, MBA Kevin and David Thoni, late 70's, Father Ryan
  15. Temper, temper....remember the Guinness. At what rankings are you looking? Matman's have ND at 7, MBA 8.

    AP Poll

Until Murphy's comes out with theirs, I would recommend the Guinness canned draught. Don't know if you'd need 12 though.

  19. I disagree. I've been there and you couldn't pay me twice what they make to call again. Well, maybe middle school. Most officials do it for the love of the sport and face it, no one is getting rich. I firmly believe, to a man, that everyone of them is doing his best. What's needed, in my opinion, is mandatory continued education and some sort of skills review. Coaches maybe required to fill out an evaluation form after each match and mail it into the TSSAA or head of officials-not as the final say-but to spot trends. MORE pay wouldn't be a bad idea either. It's not like we have an over-abundance of guys lined up to do the job.

You got me Tex, Clarksville should be ahead of CBHS.

  22. I'll tell you what, if they get most of that group from Grassland that ran away with the HVAC, they will be fine. As good a middle school team as I have seen (along with NCW). I'm not sure they all will end up at Franklin though, what with Williamson County having all those new schools.
  23. I wonder if those officials in the stands, and some other good ones who I didn't see, wanted to call and just were not asked or were given the option of duals OR individuals, or were asked and declined (some have other lives besides wrestling)? It seems that in our quest to be "fair" to all areas we deny ourselves the most competent officials. How does that selection process occur?
  24. No region mtnman, they all go. They do have some sort of seeding criteria but dang if I can ever figure it out. I'm sure someone can 'splain it.
