  1. If this young man has done nothing wrong then why isn't he playing. If I was his coach I would demand an answer quickly. How many games like the one at Rhea co. must they lose!!! Like I said If he is in good standing with the tssaa then he should be on the court. Maybe there is something we fans don't know. Maybe some adults have something to get straight before he plays again. If this was my son I would want some type of answer
  2. Jay Davis played at Mcminn co. I must have feel asleep and missed it because I was at the game!

  6. cbg, If we let home schoolers have the best of both worlds, then what do we tell all the schools that have been denied membership to the tssaa, who can't compete because they haven't met certain educational standards required by the association? The proposal for a split of public and private is not being proposed by the tssaa but by one of its member schools. Will be shocked if it happens. The independent game rule has been with us for a long time so I guess we like it. Their are exceptions to this rule, tennis, bowling golf...I think
  7. Have seen the agenda and looks like their are three items that everyone will vote on. 1. to put all private schools in D11 and all public schools in D1....a complete split based on public or private 2. to allow home schoolers to compete in the zone that they live in at a TSSAA member school. 3. to allow soccer players to play in independent games. IMO don't see the membership or the legislative council passing any of the three. However, I hear that the home school people are taking their cause to the state legislature.
  8. ta23, Sources close to me say that you were actually pinned yourself in junior high by former Lady Vol Jody Adams. If only you would have known the CJB!!!!
  9. Just thought I would share this bit of info on this subject. The California State Association,I think, plans to include girls exhibition matches during their state tournament. I think their are just 8 weight classes. There must be alot of interest in wrestling by females in California. Maybe we could have 3 divisions at our state tournament??? I don't think we have enough interest in our state for this to happen. Does anyone know any females that coach wrestling?
  10. Bill you have been at every Board and Council meeting that I have attended over the last ten years but every proposal that our school has sent in has been on the agenda of the regional meeting. I agree that the wrestling community doesn't get very involved with the Board or Council. IMO going back to one tournament will not happen anytime soon.
  11. I hear alot of complaints by different coaches, athletic directors and principals but I see very few "wrestling people" at these meetings. The TSSAA regional meetings will take place in early Nov. in Memphis,Knoxville and Nashville. Each school can present proposals or changes that they want to become part of the TSSAA bylaws. The proposals are voted on in each region and usually if their is a strong majority vote across the state, the legislative coumcil will make those changes. You must get your proposal in about four weeks prior to the meetings. Not all proposals that pass in the regional meetings become part of our bylaws. These meetings are held at 1PM at different schools and are open to coaches also. I know that most coaches are involved with their practices and that makes it hard for you to attend. The meetings last about two hours, depending on what is on the agenda. If you don't like how things are being done get your school involved and try to change it.
  12. Weak tournament, less expensive, eliminated from the tournament by someone that was ejected??? IMO last years tournament was fantastic. If you want to go back to an 8 or 16 man bracket then I'm sure you remember that we only gave 4 medals in each weight. It takes about 8 hours to drive from Bristol to Memphis and their is alot of difference in the level of competition as you go through our state. The 32 man bracket does allow more of the strong wrestlers in a particular area to get into the state bracket. When we moved to the 32 man bracket some said that our tournament would would be watered down. How many times has that watered down fourth place finisher beaten a region champion? Many times. I bet you can ask any young man that has placed in the 32 man bracket format how they feel about the medal that they won and I'll bet most are extremely proud to be considered all-state. When the TSSAA gives us more qualifiers and medals as they did many years ago,why would we want to give that up????
  13. When are these public schools going to "file a petition". Any idea who the person or persons that will take this to the TSSAA. I have never seen a petition filed. I don't think they want to file it with the Board of Control, since they don't deal with these issues. The Legislative council would handle issues like a split. I'm curious, why will they ask council members for a split? I have been following the actions of the TSSAA and the public/private issues for many years and I have never seen this one. Good luck, you will need it.
  14. OnlineLC Don't think you will see option 3 happen. If a member school drops out of the TSSAA,they can't compete against member schools without TSSAA permission. It would be very hard.very hard for many private schools to come up with a workable schedule in all sports. Also can't compete against any school in any state if they are not a member of the national federation and the school they schedule is a member. National Federation only recognizes one association in each state. Most private schools could not afford the travel it would take. IMO,at this time, there is not a big push by the legislative council to change our current format.
  15. KKW, Sorry, didn't have my information with me when I made the post. We are certainly glad to have you in our tournament.

  17. The Bradley Central Invitaional will be held on Dec.20 and 21. If you would be interested in attending call Turner Jackson at (423)476-0645.
  18. The legislative council recently passed a rule that basically says that if you are at a private school that boards then you can transfer to any school and become elgible.(as long as the school you transfer to is not in that boarding schools "day student zone") Also any student athlete can transfer to a private boarding school and become elgible. IMO we are making a huge exception for boarding schools. If you transfer to another school, with an athletic record, you must sit out 12 months from last participation. Any athlete can apply for a hardship that might be granted by the tssaa and maybe become elgible. Hardships are not as easy to get as many think. Also any athlete can transfer an be elgible to play junior varsity as soon as they get to the new school. Also if the athletes parent is a teacher/coach and they move to a new school their son or daughter can go with them and be elgible even if there is no move.
  19. Changes made to the bylaws of the tssaa can't be presented to the legislative council by an individual. Those proposed changes must come from a school that is a member and be signed by the principal. If you really want the change to have a chance,a school needs to get it o n the agenda of their regional meeting that is held in the fall. IMO the legislative council will take a good look at those proposals that are passed in the regional meetings,if the majority of our membership wants the proposal. I don't think The merit proposal has a chance but any proposal can be put to a vote by the membership.
  20. I don't understand all the talk about a public/private split. I am not aware of any talk by the legislative council of the tssaa about a split that involves a split of public and private schools. I was for the split of financial aid/non-financial aid schools when it happened but there was never any talk about a public/private split. Most people don't understand how many different types of private(they now like to be called independent schools) that we have in the state of TN. There are very small independent schools that can hardly make it financially. There are very big and powerful independents that charge a tuition of about 24,000 a year. There are all male and all female independent schools. There are independent schools that board students. Some independent schools like most public schools must do fund raisers to support their athletic teams, some get 25 million dollar donations. Some regions of our state don't even have private schools, My point is that when we talk about private or independent schools we usually only think about the private schools that we come in contact with in our athletics. I am not a independent or private school supporter but I do think that they are here to stay. I have no problem participating against any privte school that does not give scholarships. I am very concerned about the fact that when we split into Div.I and Div.II we allowed unlimited financial aid. This will IMO cause more hard feelings between some priviate and public schools. How can we allow unlimited financial aid and have a recruiting rule? I do know that there is some talk about all of us going back together but I will be very surprised if that happens with all the unlimited financial aid and court cases that the private schools have put the tssaa through. We had problems getting along when there were scholarship limits, how could we survive now?
  21. ELA The case with BA is over, from what I understand. The Supreme Court sent it back to Cincinnati and the recruiting rule was upheld. Carlton Flatts lawsuit against Ronnie Carter and the tssaa was dropped. I will be very shocked if we go back together. What year is that old Buick?
  22. Seems as though many have forgotten why we split. It is not a public-private split,it's a scholarship/non-scholarship split. Some schools that gave financial aid were out of control. They violated tssaa rules, quotas on scholarships and were recruiting athletes with a passion. With all the legal action by a few schools and the unlimited financial aid now,IMO you won't see the split go away. I do feel for the smaller private schools who have to compete against the very big and powerful private schools. Seems as though the tssaa is fine with the split so I would guess we will stay this way.
  23. Title IX just celebrated its 30th birthday and their has been alot of print about this subject. Although great for womens sports, sure has been rough on the sport of wrestling. USA Today reports that of the 400 programs dropped because of title IX,170 were wrestling programs. I sure do hate that we lost SEC wrestling. Tennessee and Carson Newman are about all thats still around. Remember when we had Alabama, Auburn,Florida,Georgia,Georgia Tech,Tennessee,UT Martin,Florida Tech,Florida International,MTSU,LSU,Southern Tech,Kentucky and Miami Dade North and South. What about all the great coaches that were in these programs. Gray Simmons,Swede Umbach,Lowell Lange,Tom Milkovich,Gary Snider,Fletcher Carr to name a few. Does anyone remember when Auburn hosted the NCAA tournament? Sure wish we had these programs back for alot of obvious reasons. Just wanted to see if anyone had any thoughts on title IX.
  24. CBG, Clint and Pete are two people that have given alot to our sport. I don't know you but I'll bet they were refs 20 years before you were born. They also have done alot for the sport through the board of control and the legislative council of the tssaa. Things that I'm sure you probably aren't aware of. They may not be your favorite refs but they do care about wrestling.
  25. The board of control is made up of mostly principals that actually do care about high school sports. When Clint Abbott retired from the board we lost a person that knew the sport and what was good for the sport. The legislative council does have Pete Stafford,a guy that does know the sport. Most of the time,in my opinion, the board looks to Ronnie Carter for direction on wrestling. Some of the coaches proposals were actually national federation changes, things not on the state level.
