Correction: Covington brought out 14 seniors for senior night. I thought it was 17 in an earlier post.

I’ll be glad if that’s the case. Skylan Smith has a couple of kickoff return TD’s and averages over 40 yards per return. Our QB, Braden Gover punts and averages 49 yds per. We have a couple of place kickers and hit a 42 yd field goal last week versus Ripley. Sounds like that plays to our strength.

This is senior night in Covington. I think I counted 17/seniors on the roster, but we will see tonight. I know that we have played mostly freshmen and sophomores in the defensive backfield. The young guys back there took some lumps this season, especially early. As we get into the playoffs, we will see if they have improved enough by now to hold up their end.

Not much being said about such a key game. I would have thought there would be more discussion. Maybe they don’t have internet yet at Newbern. I don’t recall seeing DC posters on the T. GO TOMCATS!,

Massey predicts Ripley 35 Sheffield 21 so you are probably right. If Sheffield loses this game, it’s possible that 7-3A could sweep 8-3A. Is 8-3A suffering from the Covid shutdown of Memphis football?

That’s the way it looks to me. 8-3A appears to be set for the #1, 2, and 3 ranked teams. Raleigh-Egypt is currently in 5th place but could move into 4th place by beating East this week. I’m hearing a lot about the Jackson kid at Sheffield. He’s evidently a legit candidate for Mr. Football in 3A, being a multi-position guy (QB, receiver, DB). Ripley is locked in to going to Memphis to play Sheffield. Do you think Sheffield might take that game?

Thought that was what you meant, but then I realized that Westview was also known as the Chargers. We have a shortage of good team nicknames, I guess. Maybe one of us could change to The Chanticleers That’s the mascot that Costal Carolina uses. I’ll bet that there aren’t any high schools with that nickname.

Skylan Smith of Covington continues to add to his season stats. After 9 games, he has: Rushing 172 rushes for 1536 yards, 8.9 avg, 24 TD’s Receiving 11 catches 229 yards 20.8 avg. 3 TD’s KO returns 9 for 387, 43 avg 2 TD’s So, his 29 TD’s are a pretty good total.

Westview and Covington will meet on Thursday to decide second place in Region 7-3A. Both teams are 5-1 in the region, so this head-to-head matchup will be decisive. The winner gets a home game in the first round of the playoffs. The predictions are for a close game, with Covington coming out on top. The Chargers have won the last four meetings rather decisively: 2020. 48-0 2019 53-7 2018. 45-6 2017. 45-0 Still, this is a whole new season, and I do understand that Westview has a good squad this year. I heard the end of the Haywood radio broadcast of the game. Congrats to the Tomcats. I heard they finished up with a running back playing QB? What happened to your QB? Injured? What about next week?

What you don’t know is that the 25 years is untrue. I’m a Covington fan and we have beat them 8 times in a row, but not 25. Ripley comes into this game with the same 6-2 record as Covington, and the same 4-1 Region record as Covington. The Tigers sure do have a chance to beat the Chargers.

It's gonna be Football Weather tonight. At kickoff - 65 degrees By 10 PM, down to 56 degrees. Time to break out the sweatshirts, hoodies, etc. And the cold-natured fans might want to bring a blanket. See you at the game.
