  1. First, congratulations to Coach Brimer and the Greeneville guys. They were ready for us and took it to us last night. I think they'll represent Region 1 well next week. Maybe we can slip in too. Who knows. My hat is also off to the coaching staff at Morristown West. Someone has finally organized what I have believed for years to be a gold mine. Good looking young team. I respect what they've done. Hope they respect us now a little too. I don't have the specifics of the match because I don't have the book right here, but the final score was 64-18. Match started at 140. I'll give our results then edit the names later. 140-Michael Goldstein (SH) won by fall-6-0 Science Hill 145-Matt Stull (SH) won by disqualification-12-0 Science Hill 152-David Williamson (SH) won by fall-18-0 Science Hill 160-Adam Jones (SH) won by fall-24-0 Science Hill 171-Greg Tomas (SH) won by fall-30-0 Science Hill 189-Cory Brown (SH) lost by fall-30-6 Science Hill 215-Bret White (SH) lost by fall-30-12 Science Hill 285-Ben Murray (SH) won by fall-36-12 Science Hill 103-Jonathan Pearce (SH) won by fall-42-12 Science Hill 112-Javier Tapia (SH) won by fall-48-12 Science Hill 119-Richard Tapia (SH) won by fall-54-12 Science Hill 125-Leland Davidson (SH) lost by fall-54-18 Science Hill 130-Matt Drish (SH) won by major decision 135-Bret Usary (SH) won by fall-64-18 Science Hill There you have it.
  2. Region 1 Duals at The Topper Palace, Science Hill, 6:30 on 1/25 Greeneville vs. Dobyns-Bennett Science Hill vs. Morristown West
  3. 8 kids total-how many were actually starters is an added factor. That's why it is difficult to use individual tournament results as a polling standard. Greeneville was missing Joel Brimer and at least one other starter. A team place in a tournament can be changed by a detail as small as who has more first round matches. The second year I was here we lost the regional tournament by 3.5 points to Daniel Boone. In addition to having a much better tournament than we did, they also had one more first round match, a bout that involved one of their first seeds. That pin got them four points. And Dark Half is right. McCallie did pummel us properly on Friday night.
  4. Agreed. BayouBear is definitely one person on this board who writes readable posts, and he's been good to my kids. I appreciate that. Furthermore, I imagine that the same thing can be said about Georgia's classification system as I said about North Carolina's, especially if Collins Hill is #8 over there. Have any of our better teams seen Parkland, NC this year? And I agree with you about Greenback. Justin does a great job there and puts tough kids on the mat. I see it, and he's getting his kids out in the tougher tournaments now. I respect them greatly.
  5. Walkenvol, I was at the other gym with the JV guys. Coach Shelton and Coach Bosken have worked more with the older guys so I felt like they needed to be at the varsity tournament. And I'm trying to get Randy ready for the day I decide to write a book or something and test the theory that my wife only likes me so much because I'm gone so much. And Bear, I agree with you about the need for more separation in our classifications. We wrestle in North Carolina a great deal and I can tell you firsthand how the four classifications have resulted in the growth of wrestling in that state. Tim Pittman at Gibbs has been saying that for years now. There is an old wrestling guy over there who does a monthly newsletter with results and rankings for each classification. Wrestling may not be as tough there at the very top but there are a greater number of competitive teams throughout the state as a whole. It's kind of like when I was at Jeff County. When we had a little success I asked for things, and the mentality of some was that since I'd done okay without the stuff I would continue to be fine without it. Bottom line is the TSSAA doesn't think the classification system is broken, so they aren't going to fix it. This may not have much to do with the poll but maybe it does. Our entire method of doing the duals and our classification system needs to be retooled if you ask me. Make suggestions and I'll make proposals. Don't know what will happen, but I'll try.
  6. Sigh... This is why I have more or less quit posting on this board, but anyway, here we go for what probably won't be the last time. I quit posting because there is such a lack of honor, decorum, respect, or actual information on this board. This is just one more case. First, I vote on the poll for region one. Oh, and I'm from DI. I suppose the fact that I am in Johnson City and not Chattanooga or Nashville casts aspersions on my credibility, but what can I say? I grew up in Abingdon, VA and only coach wrestling part of the time and I love it here. After we got the Barnes and Noble I decided that if we had a decent microbrewery JC would be, in my opinion, the perfect town. You have to love a college that drops its football program. But I digress... The poll is a labor of love headed by Luther Killian. That should be no secret. From where I look at things, Luther is the ultimate unsung hero. He has done as much for wrestling in this state as anyone I know. What's more, he toils in relative obscurity. Fortunately those who know what is going on had the good judgement to elect him to the Hall of Fame this year. Rob Sherrill did a Tennessee poll for a while that didn't survive for whatever reason. That poll was split and was good. I miss it and Rob, but it only reinforces my point. Polls come and polls go, but one poll has stuck around, prehistoric as it may seem. There are two or three polls on this website, right? Ronnie Bray's is great, and in my opinion he does a great job of gathering information for his poll. But the coaches' poll has been around since I started. We can quit doing it since it is such a dinosaur, but one day (if honor wins out) even this website will go away. There is so little honor or respect here. This is what I tell my kids. The only poll that matters is the one posted on the TSSAA website the Monday after the state tournament. They take pictures and put them up. What proof. As far as voting goes, I have always considered myself a champion of the little guys, since the Hilltoppers are little guys themselves. Still, I am not going to let that keep me from voting for who is the best. I plan on doing the poll as long as I feel that I am informed enough to vote (which may not be true even now) but my team HAS spent more than one weekend being pummelled by some of Tennessee's and North Carolina's best. I don't know what else to say, except that as far as I can tell the poll is not some sort of secret cabal designed to feed the egos of selected coaches and programs. We're just trying to promote the sport in Tennessee. Proof once more that no good deed goes unpunished. And last time I checked, Collins Hill was somewhere in Georgia. Close to Atlanta, right? Man, is wrestling the greatest sport or what? Jeff Price Science Hill High School
  7. Independence was very impressive on all counts. They looked like a team, behaved with class, and wrestled their butts off. My hat is off to Coach Berry and Coach Gabriel. They are great guys and I enjoyed getting to meet them. They have done a great job with that team. Our tournament was better because they were there. They're the kind of people we want in our gym for this event. Look out for them in the future. Only one senior on the squad.
  8. John was definitely a character. I'll miss him and Tony Farrace sitting on the back row of the bleachers at Science Hill duals, no doubt talking about how much better wrestling was back in the day. I just hope when I'm finished I can say I've done as much for wrestling in this region as either of those guys.
  9. Top five teams-more to follow... 1) Ooltewah 2) Independence 3) Science Hill 4) Glenn, NC 5) Abingdon, VA OW 103-140-Ken Iscaro, Abingdon OW 145-285-Cody Sliger, Ooltewah Individual Champions 103-Pearce (Science Hill) 112- Bradbury (Ool) 119-Long (Greenback) 125-Hood (Ooltewah) 130-Iscaro (Abingdon) 135-Puriefoy (Abingdon) 140-Gabriel (Independence) 145-Hodges (Glenn) 152-Williamson (Science Hill) 160-Kuykendall (West Greene) 171-Young (Ooltewah) 189-Campbell (Pigeon Forge) 215-Stuff (Gibbs) 275-Sliger (Ooltewah)
  10. Hey, guess what? Nothing. Just wanted to publicize our tournament by moving it back to the top of the board. Have a great day and good luck to all who are lining up tonight.
  11. Coach Bray, How do we get info to you without posting it here? Coach Price
  12. Alcoa has scratched and West Greene will take their place.
  13. I did. My apologies. The oversight has been corrected. And Kingston will not be coming. Just found out.
  14. The Seventh Annual Scott Fandetti Brawl will be held Saturday, January 13 at Science Hill High School. The tournament is held in memory of Scott Fandetti, a wrestler at Jefferson County High School who died in an automobile accident in August of 1996. He had been sixteen for a month. Scott was a conscientious, witty kid and a heck of a wrestler. He won 65 matches his freshman and sophomore years, and was well on track to set the career win record at Jeff County. He was a two time regional finalist, winning the championship his sophomore year. Scott embodied all the things that were best about wrestling. He worked hard and never whined or complained, was a fierce competitor, and always fun to be around. When he died, one of the pledges I made was that he would never be forgotten. The tournament has become a way to keep his memory alive. It is a small tournament and we have the finals on one mat. I suppose that's sort of old school now, but the event to me is more a way to remember Scott than anything else. We have an interesting assortment of teams from three states. From North Carolina: Glenn High School, High Point NC North Henderson High School, Hendersonville, NC From Virginia: Abingdon High School John Battle High School From Tennessee: Ooltewah Greenback Alcoa Gibbs Pigeon Forge Tennessee High Independence Sullivan East Science Hill My parents put on a great event. The hospitality room is great, the awards are nice, and I actually get to sit in my chair and coach. I know we haven't promoted the tournament too well in the past. It's been called the Science Hill Tournament and the Science Hill Invitational Tournament. I hope one can see why that wouldn't work, although it presents some interesting T Shirt ideas. Anyway, I just wanted to let everybody know what's going on at The Hill next weekend. Hope we can once again put on a good tournament.
  15. Science Hill won the Greenwood Invitational in Greenwood, SC today. The Hilltoppers scored 267 points. Clover SC was 2nd with 220, Hillcrest SC B team was 3rd with 200. Champions were Jonathon Pearce (103), David Williamson (152), and Ben Murray (285) Adam Jones was 2nd at 160 Matt Drish was 3rd at 135 Javier Tapia was 4th at 112 5th place finishers were Richard Tapia (125), Leland Davidson (130), and Michael Goldstein (140) Scott Fandetti Brawl will be held at SHHS on 1/13
  16. I vote for region one and have been doing so since Bill Brimer passed it off to me in I think 1996. The poll is one of many labors of love on the part of Luther Killian, who is about the finest person I've ever known in this sport. And I still think Ooltewah and Greeneville were pretty good this year. Jeff Price Science Hill
  17. P.S. And I'll be sure to have Bo's Individual weight loss plan in my possession anytime any of you want to see it.
  18. Thank you Coach Bray. Your explanation was next to perfect. I fought Bo and one of my assistants for over a week when I made this decision. Thank you, tnfolkstyle, whoever you are. I appreciate your confidence in my team. I imagine you are someone with your finger on the pulse of Region One wrestling who can make such sweeping statements. Perhaps you can predict the exact final team scores complete with state qualifiers and match results. I'd love to see that. If you can get it to me by Monday I can take it to the seed meeting and see if I can't get the guys just to skip the tournament and give us our plaques so we can start looking towards Chattanooga. Or maybe you are a mole from Greeneville supplying Coach Brimer with some wonderful bulletin board material, which I'm sure he appreciates. And by the way, there are four Es in Greeneville. See I know that since I've been battling them for 15 seasons now. It's amazing how wrestling can attract the finest, most excellent people and at the same time draw the most dishonorable absolute imbeciles. And this website, replete with armchair Dan Gables and J. Robinsons. And I understand posts by KIDS. When I was a wrestler my coaches made decisions that I didn't like or understand. Since I've been coaching, I've made those very decisions hundreds, maybe thousands of times. And the good thing about being a kid is that you can make ignorant, uninformed, disrespectful statements and pretty much get away with them. As someone once said, "forgive them, they know not what they do..." The decision for me was a no brainer. I know I'm just a primitive screwhead from the right side of the state but in case you haven't noticed it, Greeneville is pretty good. They're in a bit of a bracketing pickle at the duals but they'll represent us East TN hillbillies right well at Clarksville. They've pushed us all year long and at the regionals we'll need every point we can scrape up. Once at Jeff County we won by a point and a half... I'm doing what I think is best for my team first and then my people. My team and my people with whom I have sweated and suffered and laughed and cried. My team and my people to whom I have given a great share of my time, devotion, and love. The mission comes first, and the mission is as many championships as we can win. If any of you self proclaimed sages want to get a degree and come take my place, have at it. Sorry Tennessee, but my team is more important than anyone's personal drama. I feel sorry for the sad people (for whom I once had absolute respect) who have created it and rejoice that me and mine are no longer part of it.
  19. Congratulations Drake, and make sure you get to Airborne School! AIRBORNE ALL THE WAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
