  1. Reloading? Threw his new clip away? Please explain!?
  2. Well T-Mac in case you haven't noticed, coaching isn't a popularity contest. If you do things the right way or the wrong way, you are still going to have people talking about you. I'm sure that there might even be some people who dislike you because that is just the way life is. I agree that Slatten didn't win many games this year and if that continues, then get a new coach, just don't get rid of him while they are still rebuilidng. It usually takes a few years to get a program to move up and play better ball.
  3. Since the illustrious CoachT has put the lockdown on the other thread concerning the Bear's return to coaching, I will post the information that I have recently acquired on this thread.I just returned from Knoxville where I attended the opening rounds of the Women's NCAA tourney. The word around Knoxville is that the Bear will be soon making his glorious return back where it all began 25 years ago in Big Orange Country. Longtime Lady Vols top assistant Mickie DeMoss recently accepted the Head Coaching position for the Lady Cats at Kentucky. The outcry from the fans in East Tennessee is for Coach Summit to bring back the Bear to fill the vacancy. It is also speculated that when Coach Summit reaches 1000 wins (she's already over 800), she may retire which will then leave the spot on the end of the bench open for, well, you know who.
  4. I have to agree with you V-Queen. I have been watching basketball for some time now and when it gets down to crunch time, the best team seldom wins. I do think that Perry County will do well because it is in their blood. They expect to win and the entire town supports them.It makes a huge difference when you are used to getting to the state. The boys know whats expected of them and will hopefully pull it together and win the tourny. If they happen to lose though, they and all teams should be proud. They have played well all season and should be proud of even making it. Good luck guys!
  5. Well volplaya it is Kirk Haston, not Hastons. I recently watched the PC-LC game and Keltner played pretty well against him, but Haston didn't have to play very well to beat Lewis County. I remember Keltner playing and he WAS the obnoxious red headed guy in the post. His main goal against all his opponents was to aggravate them to the point to where they couldn't play or in most cases, probably wanted to fight. He was a good player though, I heard he almost went to Columbia State and played college ball, but had some back problems, like getting stabbed or something.
  6. Yes, Chris is still in Linden, but he is making a living. He was a great athlete, but I wouldn't consider him a total waste. Lots of people all around the state got enjoyment out of watching Chris play basketball. Not every good player out of high school goes and plays at the next level and I hope we don't call all of these atlhetes a waste.
  7. Hubie grew up in extreme poverty on a farm in the foothills of Hampshire, Tennessee. Each morning Hubie would wake up at 4:00am to go milk the cow so his family could have fresh milk for the day. At 5:00am he would spend an hour shooting at his tire-rim hoop nailed to a walnut tree. This is where he learned to dribble the basketball so well. He once said,"if a coach wants his players to become great ball-handlers they should cover the gym floor with walnuts before each practice." After breakfast at 6:00am, he would take off on the 15 mile journey to Hampshire School riding the family mule named Katie. This was during the months when his father did not need the mule on the farm. During the fall and spring when they were using the mule to plant and harvest their crops, Hubie had to walk. His playing days at Hampshire were some of the best in school history. During his 8th grade season, he led the Hawks to the county cahmpionship where they defeated the mighty Spring Hill Raiders led by future SEC star Orlando "Papa" Wade. Hubie also excelled in his studies where he was awarded the academic award for Redneck Reading, Math for Farmers, and Hillbilly Science. During his High School Basketball Career 1984-1988 he was a four year letterman, Hubie averaged 2.0 pts per game, 5 assists, 3 steals, 3 rebounds, and 4 charges(2 given and 2 received). Upon graduation from High School in 1988, Hubie attended Columbia State where he won the MVP award in Coach Louis Conner's Basketball Fundamentals class. In 1990, Hubie was drafted in the army to serve in the Persian Gulf War. During the war, he parachuted at night into the heart of Baghdad, Iraq with his commanding officer Capt. Tim Webb. While in Baghdad the two soldiers single handedly captured an Iraqi weapons facility housing 200 SCUD missiles. On the way out of Baghdad, the two were ambushed by Saddam Hussein's Secret Police. Sgt. Smith held off the assault so that Capt. Webb could narrowly escape with his life. Hubie spent the next 6 months in an Iraqi POW camp, where he introduced the Iraqi guards to the game of Basketball. The Iraqi guards became obsessed with the game and began playing it around the clock. None of the Iraqi guards could ever beat Hubie in one-on-one. The guards became so frustrated from losing that they decided to grant Hubie his freedom. Hubie escaped across the border into Saudi Arabia where he was picked up by the American patrol and returned to the United States. Back in the U.S., Hubie was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for his bravery. He began working on the family farm and saved enough money to finish his college degree at Freed-Hardeman University. While at FHU, he led Phi Kappa Alpha to back-to-back intramural basketball championships. In the fall of 1993, he joined the staff at LCMS as an assistant to legendary Coach Howard "the Bear" Spears. The Bear taught Hubie the secrets of the much heralded 34-30 defense. As Hubie later became a Head Coach at LCMS he continued using the Bear's System to this day where the Raiders have enjoyed great success. In his free time Hubie enjoys playing with his Legends teammates including his all-time favorite player Buster. In interviewing Hubie for this story he had these comments,"I have never lost to an Iraqi in a game of basketball." Thank you Hubie for all you have done for your country and for the game of basketball.
  8. I will cast my vote for Buster and Jonah as the greatest 1-2 punch of all time at the park. First of all they are two of the greatest shooters in park history. Second, they have a career record of 799 wins and only 11 losses. Third, no one can guard Buster one-on-one in the post for the duration of a game. If a team doubles down on Buster, he kicks it out to Jonah who then nails the jumper consistently making defending this dynamic duo a KNIGHTmare for opposing teams. Not to mention that they can play the physical game which wears opponents down. In the tradition of Stockton and Malone, the Keltners have established themselves as one of if not the greatest duos in Legends Basketball History.
  9. There would be no match up between this years team and the team from 97. Also, Perry Co. does have a good coaching staff down there now and they are doing an awesome job. Perry County does a great job for actually finding good coaches that is why they have such a good basketball tradition down there. The coach that was there during the 1997 year was possibly the best and most dedicated coach that Perry Co. has ever had. They have the State Championship to prove.
  10. I agree that some small school players get overlooked, but Clifton's team hasn't had the greatest year and they also have not been running over with talent in the past. If they could ever have a few great seasons then people would start to notice them. I also agree about Rhodes from Perry Co. He is an average player lucky enough to be born into a family that is known for talented athletes. He gets noticed more for being Mike Rhodes son, than he does for playing basketball
  11. Well I am not sure where meanjeanjr got his info from, but I don't even think that Lewis Co. beat Perry Co. 3 times during Slatten's 5 years there. Even if Lewis Co. did beat Perry Co. they probably should've because Perry is A and Lewis is AA. Anyway-back to White Co., from what I hear the program is just rebuliding and every teams goes through that stage. Give it a few years and if Slatten still isn't winning then find a new coach. Give him a chance to do what he needs to to get the program back on track and give these White Co. threads a rest!
  12. I am not exactly sure how they do it, but when tourney time rolls around the Lady Cats are always fired up and ready to play. I also think that they have one of the best coaches in the state. They have a basketball tradition down there in Waynesboro and they will be the team to beat!
  13. I do not want to take anything away from the boys team, but they are nowhere near as talented as the '97' state championship team. Richardson and Jackson are doing a great job this year and I hope the team goes all the way, but come on now- you can't possibly compare Richardson to Haston or Jones. One thing people need to start realizing is that Perry Co. may not always have the best team, but when it comes tournament time they are ready to play.
  14. Just this past week, the Legends of Lewis County Basketball conducted their most intense practice session of the preseason. The Two Big Stars of the day were Joshua "Buster" Keltner who was 7 out of 8 from behind the arc and Larry "Rodjo" Rodgers who was 8 for 10 from downtown. Both appear to be playing in mid-season form. During his post-game interview, Buster had this to say,"I have been getting up every morning at 5:00 am and running 5 miles before breakfast. I have limited my lunch each day to a chicken fajita salad from the Rio. I believe that this extra conditioning will help me lead my team to a third consecutive Memorial Park Championship." Rodjo had these comments,"I have been putting in two hours of conditioning drills each night before bed. I can now do 200 push-ups and 300 sit-ups consecutively. This added muscle will help me finish on plays when I drive to the bucket." It looks as though fans can look forward to another exciting season of Memorial Madness in 2003.
  15. Well Knight that is not my not so nice name, but I will tell you what it is tomorrow morning at school. I think some people need to chill out on here. This site is for fun, not to make people mad or start stupid arguments. Just thought I would let Viqueen know, when you signed up for this and got your username you had the option of using your name and obviously you choose not to, so don't harp on the rest of us for being anonymous.
  16. First of all, we have done this thread 100 times here lately and I think surely as adults we can find something more fitting to discuss, like basketball instead of bashing Coach Slatten. He spells his name with an e instead of Slatton in case a few of ya'll can 't spell to well! Spelling obviously isn't a class at the Police Academy! Anyway, Slatten had a great bunch of guys at Perry Co., but a bad coach could have taken that group and lost. When a person deserves credit, give it to them. I am not very familiar with the White Co. team, but I do know that Slatten is doing the best he can with whatever he has. Secondly, Kirk Haston wasn't the only player on the team. They had a few other players who helped them win games, actually to win all of their games because they were 37-0. I also have a question to you guys, how many usernames can 1 person have? Isn't it kinda silly to argue with YOURSELF on here?
  17. MeanJeanJr. why don't you get off the computer and get to work. If you knew as much about basketball as you thought you did you would be a coach instead of Barney Fife!
  18. I was just curious how Bruce was doing down here. I knew him very well a few years ago, but lost contact when he moved to Sparta. I have heard nothing but horrible things on him since I moved and I was just wondering what the deal was. Frankly, I am sick of people arguing whose fault it should be that they are losing. I think the world of Slatten and I realize that if they are losing it is partly his fault as well as the players fault, but it seems now all people are doing is trying to figure out who each other is and put the blame of SParta losing on different people. I have heard enough about Slatten. I wish him and the boys the best of luck. Beleive me, I have got plenty of reasons why people are talking nasty about him, but those things people are saying he has done or said, I still don't and will never believe them. I saw him about six months ago, and he was still the same person I knew a few years back. So I just think people have done their share of bashing him on here but it is a chat board, so feel free to carry on.
  19. Look guys, finally McEwen has a winning boys team. It happens every now and then, but they are not going to dominate or anything. I am glad to see a small school do well, being from one myself, but let's get real, are ya'll going to ask if every team they play can give then any competition? Thats a little much. Let the scores speak for themselves. I do not want to sound like I am bashing them, I just think people in Humphrey's Co. are getting a little too excited.
  20. Well, if you're going to get on here and shoot your mouth off, why not reveal yourself? You mock them, but you are obviously just as bad. Hey- maybe I'm Slatten's wife or something? I sure do take up for him! Makes you wonder! I'm just joking though, I'm far from Slatten's wife, but seriously, lets get back to bball and away from bashing people and their programs!
  21. When will everybody get off Slatten's back. Hasn't he been talked about on here enough. I know him very well and the person ya'll talk ugly about, doesn't even remind me of the same man. Let's drop this thread, and maybe you can start talking about someone else. Basketball only has 2 possible outcomes, you win or lose. If White Co. was winning, would you all still be talking so nasty about him or would winning satisfy you?
  22. Glad to hear about the win. Was Tummins helping coach before she graduated from college? I thought she graduated in 97 or 98, she must of finished fast. Good luck to ya'll throughout the rest of the season. Keep us on here posted on how ya'll are doing. Me myself, I enjoy girls basketball lots more then guys.
  23. I just wanted to drop a line about Cory Brown. He was the pt. guard for Perry County 95-98. He was a great ball player and we were so unlucky to lose him in a car wreck this May. Just want to make sure that no one forgets him. He is dearly missed. [Edited by Hoopngal on 12-17-02 7:13P]
  24. Well, I am glad you gals are have a good season, just curious because I have heard so much about guys and no one seemed to post anything on the girls. I do not have a team because I am not a player anymore. I do kmow what its like to have a great boys program overshadow the girls program, so just don't get discouraged, girls are just as important as boys. Keep us posted on how you are doing. Kacy Tummins, is this her first year coaching? I just thought I remembered her playing in high school, not that long ago.
  25. In the pre-season I heard a lot about MCHS boys, then they lost a few games, won a few, whats up with them now? Are they the high calibor team I heard, or going to struggle this season?
