  1. Big D, a history lesson: At the district realignment meeting three years ago, people were shocked that Milan, Union City, and Westview were all shoved in the same region. Not only that, but Trenton and Humboldt were in there as well. People could not understand why the line was not a north and south or east and west, like it had been in the past. At that meeting, one of our people from McKenzie stood up and talked about how you could not predict who was going to be a power in NW Tn football. At the time, it was pretty obvious who was; Milan and Westview (dropping down from 3A, met in the semi-finals) and Union City (fresh off a state title game appearance). He proceeded to stand up and say, "Ladies and Gentleman, McKenzie football is back." After that rousing speech, Coach Morris had a discussion with that man. He relayed that he was glad that he made that statement and wanted to know if McKenzie and Milan could play...............they still haven't. Furthermore, Westview and UC have been trying to put us on the schedule for atleast the last 6 years...............they have had to play teams in Memphis. Why doesn't McKenzie get respect? Because they refuse to play UC, Milan, and Westview year after year when it makes sense for both schools. Huge gates, good competition, limited travel. This eventually bites us in the post season. Outside of Huntingdon, we don't play top notch programs year after year. That does not prepare us for the play-offs and we get toasted in the Semi's, being shut out each year. Coach Comer has done an outstanding job with our team. I hope we can turn the corner this year.
  2. Upper 2A mix??????? Please. We can't beat top tear program. Again, barely beat the worst team in 7-2A tonight. 1999-Huntingdon (Smoked us) 2000-Union City 2001-Westview (Smoked us in the Semi's) 2002- Memphis Mitchell (Smoked us in the Semi's) All we have been is the third or fourth loser.
  3. That will NEVER happen. We just about got beat by the worst team in 7-2A. I am not looking forward to the playoffs. I don't think I can handle ANOTHER semi-final loss.
  4. I know we are beating a dead horse, but..........let's all say it together: This was not an upset!!! The only people upset were the McKenzie fans. 7-2A is better, top to bottom, than 6-2A. This was evident in by the 2-0 record by 7-2A Friday night in the two games pitting these districts against each other. Dresden has played a tougher schedule, are in a tougher district, and were the more physical team. Personally, I hope McKenzie and Dresden lock horns again. Once again, McKenzie is a very good football team. McKenzie now has a respect for the top notch schedule Huntingdon plays every year. Life is tough outside of 6-2A.

When you rely on the pass, YAC's are very important. 4 int's (and I think alot of Hays) is bad Hays was forced out of the pocket all night long. If your passing game is the dominate part of your offensive package and you got beat, something got shut down. Passing teams are supposed to put more than 20 points a game, just like McKenzie has been doing all year. We could argue all night long. The difference is that you are a McKenzie guy and you are looking through red tinted glasses. McKenzie is still a very good team and this was just a bump in the road. They will rebound nicely against a much improved Chester County squad.

Shutting down the passing game: 1) Tackles after the catch is made 2) Not giving up big plays 3) Forcing Interceptions 4) Forcing the QB to throw on the run 5) Forcing the throw into a four deep zone because the front four have stuffed the run game altogther. Please don't talk about class when it comes to Dresden. This is a sore subject in D-town. Coach Chappell is the only one who the Dresden coaching staff DID NOT have to run down after the game to offer congrats/good wishes. Don't forget about the little yellow hanky that drove the final nail in the coffin either.

Why was the Dresden win such a surprise? 7-2A is a much better district than 6-2A and it has been since the district alignments three years ago. McKenzie likes to throw out the "weak schedule" remarks all the time. Really????? 7-2A is loaded every year. All six teams are well coached and there is never a guaranteed victory. Even in a year where Westview and Union City is struggling, even those games are not guaranteed. Just ask Dresden about how easy the game against Westview was. You never know what kind of teams Trenton and Humboldt are going to have; and we all know about MILAN. 6-2A gets to play Adamsville and Riverside. Camden and Chester Co. are much improved, but it has been recent. And the johnny come lately's of McKenzie can only boast of two extremely successfull years. Huntingdon.....enough said. They are the only team in the district with any kind of successful tradition. The only thing is, it is more than the rest combined. McKenzie, utill this year, has refused to play tough teams outside of it's region. The only game they have had to get up for is Huntingdon. Huntingdon has always stepped outside and played Union City, Martin, and Milan; even when they didn't have to. This year McKenzie has only picked up one of the three. We have heard about how they are chomping at the bit to play Westview after they "ran up the score" two years ago......................in the state semi-finals. It wasn't Westview's job to stop Westview. Maybe this year McKenzie can stop the dive. Dresden did stop the passing game. Hays is a very good quarterback, but his 4 INT's were a result of pressure by the Dresden defense. The dropped passes were a result of routes run accross the middle and the shots that were waiting for the WR's. He had an uncharacteristically bad game. I doubt he will have one like that again in his High School career. The game wasn't even as close as the score. This comes from someone who wasn't playing or filming the game. Just someone who came to watch two top rated teams in the state play each other.
  8. Beave, I was wondering the same thing?!?!?!?!? Willie Trevathan is the answer those boys need to get over the hump. It would not be wise to replace Slack with Schlict.....just my opinion. [Edited by TheWarden on 4-19-03 10:34P]

    Westview-Martin

As for now, Paul Slack will be the coach next year. There are several teaching positions open at Westview. If one is filled by a football/baseball coach, Slack will more than likely be left out. This will be the case unless something out of the ordinary happens because Coach Coady is short 3 people on his staff. If not, the job will probably be his next year if he wants it. The door is still open for Coach Tritt at Humboldt if he chooses to return next year. If not, Coach Scott will replace him.
  10. whoami is obviously one of the players he mentioned. I just hope this group of players work harder for Coach Dilday that the group of boys the past few years worked for Coach West. One more thing, if the parents will keep quite, Dresden could have some pretty good years. If not, it will be more of the same. To many chiefs, not enough indians.
  11. The only people who said Mitchell was going to win it all were their fans after they were beaten by Greenfield in the sub-state game. Good luck to you guys. I hope you have saved your best for last. Either way, we are very proud of you.
  12. I think Tyler Porter from Greenfield has to atleast be considered. He runs the team. Great poise, and he has saved his scoring outbursts for the state tourney. Without him, Greenfield would not be in the state championship game. [Edited by TheWarden on 3-22-03 3:55P]
  13. Sorry OS91, I had Rowsey on the brain instead of Hall. I had the opprotunity to see Beechboard play 5 or 6 times, Cavin and Rowsey quite a bit. I was really impressed with Cavin in the State Tourney. With all the talk on here about the teams in West Tennessee having weak schedules, I was wondering of Cavin's stats and Westview were overrated. I was looking for a Westview/Livingston Academy game for validation. What I got was Westview was and is for real, and so is Cavin. If I am not mistaken, she averages anywhere from 4-6 assists a game.
  14. 1) She and Rowsey are the two best players in the state. Rowsey is not up for it, the nod goes to Cavin. I've seen all three play, all are worthy, I still give it to Cavin. 2) Led her team to the state finals this year, averaged 22 pts a game in the tourney, guards the best player on the other team, leads the point on the press. Like the rest of the Westview Lady Chargers, hustle, hustle, hustle, hustle, and a little more hustle for 32 minutes. 3) She deserves it.
  15. Thank you for providing Weakley Co. with another in a long line of very talented girls basketball teams. Good job to Coach McMillian, his staff, and the class shown by the fans of Martin. A special thanks goes out to all of the parents, especially those of the five seniors, for dragging them to practice and instilling in them a positive work ethic and a desire not to quit when adversity struck. Also, thank you for showing that West Tennessee Basketball can play. Your march to the state championship game proved that there is no such thing as a weak schedule in West Tennessee. A few things go the other way, and you ladies are state champs. You ran into a very good Jackson Co. team and made it tough on them to become a 4 time champion. Just do us all a favor, make sure they don't make it 5!!!!
  16. Westview's blue set Gibson Co.'s red USJ's white Dresden's black Both of Gleason's Best in the state: Dyersburg's black set.
  17. I had the opprotunity to see both play tonight. What are your thoughts?
  18. Contact the TSSAA. Better yet, if you know any coach, they will be able to put you on to the name of the associations regional director in your area.
  19. I'm trying to figure out how "skyhawkeric" has 11 good marks on 18 posts. Could it be that skyhawkeric and madmancoker are giving each other bogus marks?????? [Edited by TheWarden on 2-25-03 10:40P]
  20. The fans are terrible. It is a shame that we are talking about them instead of the great basketball they are playing. Then again, that has always been the case. I hope these young ladies will rise above that and bring a gold ball to West Tennessee.
  21. If you don't like, feel free to become one. The pay is great and you get to be around great kids and good coaches. [Edited by TheWarden on 2-25-03 10:34P]
  22. Dyer Co.'s SEVEN points in the third was their lowest point total in ANY quarter they have played all year. Hopefully we will get to see Dyer Co. and Westview play TWO more times this year!!
  23. The only people crying on here is you guys. Westview played a GREAT game. I don't understand why they cannot celebrate after knocking off the 3rd best team in the state AND winning the district title and a number 1 seed in the regionals. They have not made any comments that have slammed DC fans, players, or coaches. The officials had absolutely nothing to do with Dyer Co.'s poor shot selection, missed shots, turnovers, and Westview's excellent defense. Crittendon was a non-factor and Westview controlled the pace of the game. If Dyer Co. could play man to man defense, the outcome might have been different. It would also help if DC would have pressed BEFORE Bright got into foul trouble. Dyer Co. is at its best in transition. DC's inablility to pressure Westview and the patience by Martin on the offensive end was DC's undoing. A great game to watch and be a part of. One more question, What on earth was Coach Hopkins complaining about on the inbound pass on the baseline? He should have gotten a Technical for that, but the officials let it go BECAUSE of how close the game was.
  24. Tissue anyone? Sounds like your team didn't need her anyway. Try something new, root for the players you have.
  25. They were young kids last year. Now they are seasoned veterans. Look for them to do big things for the next several years.
