Blaze Scrimmage Shows Weakness as well as Possibility
The Blaze's methodical offense powered past Franklin County 19-7 in their scrimmage held Friday afternoon at Blackman. The Blaze starters ran the ball well at times, yet seemed to falter each time in the red zone. The game began in a thirty minute long rain storm. As the rain fell, the Rebels of Franklin County drove the length of the field on the Blaze starting defense. This drive was cut short of the end zone by a Terry Wanthalangsay interception. He returned that interception to the Rebel's side of the fifty. The first blaze drive stalled just inside the thirty. The Blaze next two drives also stalled inside the red zone. However, if this had been a game situation, the Blaze would have probably kicked three field goals instead of going for it deep in rebel territory. The game stayed locked at zero until the Rebel's tail back broke free and raced 65 yards for a touchdown putting the Rebels up 7-0 at the half-time break. The beginning of the second half was a repeat of the first. The Blaze offense moved well at times, and the defense didn't give up another big play. The score was still 7-0, when substitutions were made. The Blaze second team was definitely a bright spot in the scrimmage. The number 2 D stayed away from giving up big plays, and the number 2 O made big plays. Blackman's first touchdown came on a pass from Sophomore quarterback Matt Dawson to Senior Wide Receiver/Kicker Josh Dennis. Dennis raced 60 yards to pay dirt after catching a pass in the flat. The extra point to follow was bobbled and missed, making the score 7-6. Blackman substitutes again brought joy to the Blackman fans in attendance, when Terrell Mainer, the back up tail back, broke a long run to give the Blaze the lead 13-7. And with the scrimmage winding down, Dawson finished the scrimmage with his second touchdown pass of the day to Blake Lewis in the corner of the end zone. The extra point was not attempted and the scrimmage ended 19-7.
