  7. ok, some one has to explain this to me. in the past high school coaches would get an email from the THSSCA to nominate players for all-state from their team or teams they played. Then a list was sent out of the nominees to coaches to vote on and that is how the all-state teams were picked. now for the A-AA team, they allow each team that makes the state tournament an allotted number of players, and then they pick up to four players from the entire state who were not in the state tournment and coaches dont get a vote or say in who is nominated. this seems unfair to really deserving players whose teams don't make it to state. having watched many games from around my area, there are a lot fo deserving players who are not even given a shot at this if their team is not a state tournament team. and this is crazy. in AAA they picked a team of 48 players. in A-AA they picked 19 players. in AAA they picked more forwards than A-AA picked for the entire team. I know all-state should means something and not be a particpation award, but 48 is a little high and 19 probably isn't enough.
  8. here's my bold predictions for next year: Jackson Christian, CAK, ND, CCS, Knox Catholic, CPA all make it to state. The final two spots will be one magnet school and one public school, one from middle and and one from west tennessee. It is the same as always until they do the complete splitt or follow the 4 class system purposed by yAxis on here in a different thread. semi: KC over CCS, ND over JC final: KC over ND
  9. i like the propoasl from yAxis for the 4 class system and then the 3 classes for the current A-AA and AAA sports. this sounds like it would work by keeping the private schools happy by staying away from d2 and the publics happy by not having to play bigger schools or the smaller school having to play as many privates. TSSAA should like it as well as it would give them most postseason games to make money and more games at the state tournament to make money as well. could also cutdown on travel for some schools possibly.
  10. * So let me throw out a possible solution. Continue districts as is. Once region tournament is over separate A/AA into A and AA. Privates go into the AA sub state brackets. Publics are given the option of going AA if they qualify at region OR dropping into the A bracket which is composed of all small public school teams. Some type of power rating would have to be devised to put the 16 top small publics into the A sub state round. The devil is in the details to come up with a way to do this but it should pass the TSSAA test because you will have another set of games to collect $$ from. And privates can compete with best privates and the top notch public AA schools who want to put their game at that level. I am thinking Greeneville this year/they were upset by CAK but should have been at state and would have been very competitive with ND and Catholic. AND, the small publics have a shot at a ring in A! This idea was thrown around by the TSSAA but with a slight change in the past. They would keep districts the same for regular season play as they are now, but once post season started all privates would be placed in division II and all publics in division I and then split into classes. Problem was deciding who played who and where in a short amount of time according to a source that was in the room so it was left to the side. I find the mention of magnet schools and open enrollment curious. Magent schools choose their students by a lottery, everyone that puts their name in has the same odds of getting in. if you name does not get pick (its actually a number and not a name) then you dont get in. They do not know who they are admitting or denying when the numbe rcomes up. I see this different than private schools who can examine a student for every angle before saying yes you can come in or no you cannot not. They make the decison based on the student unlike a magent school who makes a decision based on chance. Open enrollment is another thing. I am not an expert on open enrollment, but i think if you go to an open enrolled school you have to at least live in the county the school is located in. I also know if someone crosses county lines to go to school they can pay out of district tuition which to me is the same as a private school. TSSAA could make a rule that says if you let out of district students attend by by tuition like this, then you play in the highest public school class or you play in division II, wonder how that would change how schools do open enrollment.
  11. To address ladymustangcoach's statement of cost, I actually think it would be the same or less travel for the privates. Here is why i say this. Right now in DII A and AA the middle tn schools travel to chattanooga and knoxville to play games in football and other sports as their is not enough DII schools in their area. Examples are BGA playing at Webb, McCallie playing at Ensworth and so forth. If you took the private schools that play in DI, add them to the DII groups, their is actually more teams in your area to play and you would not have the travel you currently do for games. Also, A and AA exist in the private school division so you would be grouped with similar sized schools. It would also allow for more money for the T$$AA if you think about it. Right now they only take 4 teams to the girls state tournament instead of 8 like in public division. they could expand that to 8 and add two more games per class for more gate money. And in football, it could add more 1st round games at close schools and not give first round byes to the top two or three teams. If the TSSAA thought of it that way, they would jump at the chance as they usually look at dollar signs more than anyhting. as a lady mustang supporter, I assume you are from Lipscomb Academy. If i were you, I would be against the split as well. This would mean you would have to play CPA, Ensworth, USN, BGA, Brentwood Academy, Father Ryan, and JPII instead of the aweful public schools in Nashville and who would want to do that.
  12. 2013-14 state championships in the classes affect by private schools: Baseball: A-Jackson Christian AA-CAK Girls Soccer: A-AA Knox Catholic Volleyball: A-Goodpasture Boys Golf: Lipscomb Girls Golf: Boyd Buchannon? Boys Soccer: CPA Girls Tennis: CAK Boy Tennis: Knox Catholic Track anf Field: 10 of the 18 events were won by private schools in the girls side I would say from just last school year (2013-14) it is definetly not just a girls soccer issue. If i had more time i am sure it would look very similar going back even further. Just curious as well. In TN, if a high school coach goes to a middle school or elementary school during recess and picks out athletes they think would be good at their sport and steers them into a particular program, is that not the definition of recruiting which is strongly against the rules to play in division one in our state?
  13. ND competes with Texas and Michigan and other big schools because all those school have one thing in common. They all give 85 scholarships in football and give the same number in each sport. Doesn't matter how many students you have if you pick the number to fill out you roster like colleges do. Better example would be for notre dame to be told they could not turn away students for any reason and they could not talk to students about coming there to play a sport and see how well they compete.
  14. Siegel was awful last october during the girls state tournament which was before the harsh winter. Downs is always bermuda and never seeded over in the fall. It is brown every winter and early spring and takes a good beating due to all the games played on it. Never seen the others in the spring. My point is if you don't plan for winter weather than you field will look brown and dead during the spring. Yes the weather was worse than expected but could be prevented if done correctly. Just look at fields that were green in the spring and yes there was plenty of them and it as a field that took the correct steps.
  15. Now that the season is over, thought I would turn everyones attention to a new topic to debate until next fall (or until a decision is made). It seems to have been put on the back burner during the reshuffling of football, but does the committee the TSSAA formed to look in to the complete public-private split make a decision soon? If i remember correctly, they were going to discuss this around November/December back when the TSSAA didn't vote on it but decided to form a committee to look into it. If you want more data try this out: I will not include AAA schools because they are not affected, but just look at the A-AA state tournament. Since the state tournament expanded to 8 teams in 2003, public schools have won a grand total of 3 games at the state tournament. (White House in 2012, Greeneville in 2009, and Chucky-Doak in 2005) No public school has won a semifinal game in the same span. Ridgeway, now a AAA school, won 5 straight championships from 1998-2002. Take those out, and private schools have won every state title in A-AA since 1997, a span of 17 years. Is it belly-aching by public school who cannot compete with private schools or private schools who cannot compete with other private schools? Complaining? Is it fair and fair to who?
  16. First off, most golf courses plant bermuda and let it go dormant in the winter, that is why they are brown until the first 80 degree day in the spring. They do not over seed it due to cost compared to who is going to play on it in the winter and then having to spray it in the spring to get the rye out. Second, of course you have to do more than just plant the rye. Many fields use a subsatnce called potash, which is a fertilizer that works as an insulator during the cold months. You also let the rye grow slightly higher than bermuda to help it out as well in the spring. Facts are if you want to play on a green field in the spring, you have to plan for it in the early fall. It doesnt happen overnight. It also helps if you have someone who knows what they are talking about helping you work on the field and not relying on the city or county to take care of it because they don't want to or can't afford to. If you dont believe what i am saying, which is fine with me, ask a baseball coach how they get green fields in the early spring and they will tell you the same thing and they play in the same weather as boys soccer in the spring.
  17. There were several fields that had grass last spring. All you had to do was plant winter rye in late September or early October and the field would have been green all spring even with the hard winter we had. As far as fields go three a-aa schools come to mind. Columbia Academy has a great playing surface but the field itself is small. The other is Fairview. Their field is always in great shape in both fall and spring and is one of the larger fields around. But if i had to pick one Lipscomb Academy would be at the top of my list.
  18. JC over CAK (upset pick) ND over Spring Hill CCS over HFA KC over Chester Co. ND over JC KC over CCS KC over ND (3-1) final
  19. District 11 A-AA Semifinals Fairview 4 Richland 2 Columbia Academy 4 Montgomery Central 2
  20. I absolutely do know there is a difference between brown bermuda and dead grass. When bermuda turns brown it becomes very unstable and is easily tore up with divots. It doesn't take a genius to know that late September/early October if you know you are going to play sports on a field in cold weather, you overseed with winter rye. It allows the grass to stay green and playable throughout the colder months. If i know a tournament is going to be held in November or early spring, this would make sense. It also provides some insulation to the dormant bermuda in the cold months. Ask any one who work son ball fields and they will tell you this is a no brainer. How do you think that in February and March soccer and baseball and softball have green grass?
  21. so you guys are complaining about a few dead spots on a soccer field. did you all see those fields in November when they had the girls state tournament there? all of the fields were brown and not a single piece of green grass. no one talked about moving those games.
