Tihlee played in the blue and white game Saturday. So I think that one can be put to rest.

Volunteer scored 5 times and GC scored 4 times, so I suppose you could say Volunteer "won" but it's hard to judge anything when you're switching different players in and out every couple of plays. It's also difficult to say how GC will do this year, considering they've only been in pads for 2 days. I'm anxious to see how they do against somebody other than their teammates. Should be fun.

I'm "spewing my opinion" because GC was brought into it. I'm sorry your home town paper puts us on the front page more than they do you, but we have no control over that. You shouldn't let that cloud your vision. Not sure how many got scholarships, but their QB was a freshman and is awesome. They graduated the majority of their playmakers so we'll see how he does with fewer options.

Is Volunteer still coming to GC on August 8th? I had read somewhere that Abingdon was coming also and wasn't sure if it was a 3-way or what. Very good scrimmage last season and I hope for the same this year.

Not exactly sure what "embarressing and compair" mean, but I wasn't making a comparison between a scrimmage and a state championship. My point was, a scrimmage means absolutely nothing. Whether it's in 1970 or 2008. A scrimmage should be a learning tool and measuring stick. If we get out tails whipped in every scrimmage from now until the end of time, I can live with that as long as we have a respectful season. We took a very young team to a state championship game last year and lost 52-0 to a very very good football team. Bottom line, we were still at a football game that day. How many state championship games have you attended? This thread was supposedly about the Top 25 historical teams in Tennessee, not Virginia.

It amazes me how GC always gets pulled into these threads. Yes GC beat THS in the scrimmage. NO DB has NOT offered a game against GC. It's a no win situation for DB. That came straight from a DB coach several years ago. As for the DB-GC scrimmage, GC fans have always showed up strong for scrimmages. We love our football. There's no shame in that. As for the "DB domination" in that scrimmage, GC went on to win the state championship. How many championships have DB won ON the field? As for the comment about GC needing to play "bigger schools" because of their size...here's a breakdown of our district.......enrollment in parenthesis... Gate City (666) John Battle (641) Lebanon (570) Lee High (797) Virginia High (700) Seems pretty comparable to me. Also bud...Virginia has TWO divisions in each classification...not four as you stated. Again I'm sure I'll get battered for this, but felt the truth needed to be out there. When GC's got an open date, I always go to a DB game. I have many friends over that way, but honestly to read this board it makes a man wonder.

I'll have to drive down to watch the South scrimmage today. There was a guy there last week that said you guys wore Elizabethton out 2 weeks ago. Is that true?

lol........You might want to read over this entire thread and see where all the "trash" is coming from. So far I've seen respect between GC, Volunteer, South, and TN High. All of the trash has come from DB. I respect the DB program. If they play on a night that we're idle, I always go watch them. When the South/DB games were on Thursday nights, I was there. I support all of the area schools and the kids that play for them.

That was the hardest we've hit in awhile. We didn't have any of that last year. Kern did a very good job for us at QB. Tihlee looked great backing him up. I understand both will play QB, most likely depending on the situations. Our receivers did very well also. Our secondary still concerns me. We're in desperate need of a coach for that area. #33 for us ( freshman and can't recall the name) plays great. He made several tackles in the backfield. There were several times I think we overpursued and Barlow made us pay. Scrimmages are for seeing what you need to work on, and I think both teams saw the areas they need work in. We'll still be in trouble when we go to Richlands to open the season, but then again most teams in VA will be also. I'm looking forward to the season.

I'm not sure how you think it could've been "much worse" for Gate City. After the 14-0 lead, we subbed in freshmen with 5 on the field playing defense the next series. Volunteer moved the ball well, and will have a good season, but it was pretty evenly matched throughout. Gate City's first team offense moved the ball very well on Volunteer's D. Keep in mind this is only our second week of practice. Virginia doesn't have spring football practice as Tennessee schools do, so TSSAA schools are much more progressed than we are at this stage. All in all it was a very good scrimmage. Both teams played hard , both showed enthusiasm, and both will be fine once the season starts. The Barlow kid is going to be something to watch for Volunteer.

Ah don't confuse them with facts THS. On a more serious note, the Barlow kid at Volunteer seems to be a heckuva running back. I hope he has a great season. I enjoyed watching him. How are the Vikes looking THS?

Probably about as many as DB has Hawkins County kids. I don't recall seeing anyone say anything about DB in this thread.

Should be a good test for both teams.

Just curious if/when any teams in the Tri-Cities area will scrimmage this week. We (Gate City) scrimmage Volunteer next Friday, but I was hoping to catch some football this week if at all possible. Thanks in advance.

DB and Tennessee High have had great games in the past. Not sure how old some of you are, but it hasn't been that long ago that they were considered rivals.

I wish Gate City and Tennessee High would play each other again. I've heard we're picking up South next year though.
