  1. To be honest, neither team looked that good. Gonna be a long season for Avery. Don't look for them to win a game in their conference. I thought The landers of up more points against a very weak Avery team.
  2. Cloudland over Avery by 2 touchdowns or more. Avery finished next to the bottom of their conference last year and are not as good as they were. No line.
  3. I hear that Cloudland is backing out of the football contract. Don't quite understand the ethics of that. You do not have contracts for basketball because you play each other twice during the season. Basketball schedules are made year to year depending on what coaches think is best for their teams. Don't really see what baskertball has to do with football.
  4. The loss to Avery County was at Avery. After trouncing them in Tennessee, we knew we would have a fight to win at Avery. It is much like Greene County, with their own set of rules and referees. The only thing I need to mention is that there were 33 traveling violations called. And we lost by only a few in overtime. I was at the Avery game. If we had game film i think we would find that the most of the traveling calls, by both teams, were legit. You can't shuffle your feet before you take off. I thought the biggest difference was that they had their 6 ft. center back that did not play in the first game. Friend of mine told me that Avery was 0-4 to start the season without her and 11-1 with her back.
  5. As far as the traveling calls; we did not get the calls we get at home. Seldom do the refs call the shuffle before the dribble. The refs in nc evidently do. just need to learn to dribble before we move our feet.
  6. Marc Campbell - Tennessee High. Played with Derrick Hord. Campbell went on to Clemson and led the ACC in 3 pt. % the first year they had the 3 pt. shot.
  7. Unfortuately, I had to play against Coach White's teams back when. If you think the man doesn't know talent, you don't know basketball. Coach White never fielded a team unless he had the best players on the floor. (beat the crap out of us more than once) One thing I gaurentee you though; you will earn your playing time in practice and with your attitude.
  8. Have any other Carter County programs been hit with fines for rules violations?
  9. "Foul langauge is a strong way to express a weak mind."
  10. But the only fact you proved is that anyone can beat anyone on a given night. That's why they play the games. I didn't say that Hampton couldn't hold their own. Just that they would be an average team in that conference which doesn't have any standout teams this year. Very average year for them. Of course the whole thing is mute. It doesn't really matter what they do over there. Those NC teams will all be beaten by some really good teams when they go off their mountain.
  11. What on here isn't opinion. I can say "I think Hampton will beat Grace" or "I think Cloudland will beat Jellico." It's all opinion until they play. You can only Become a fact after the game is played. Who would have thought App. State would beat Mich.? I held the "opinion that they would, Then it bacame fact. As far as the Avery/Cloudland match up; my "opinion" is that if Avery's starting qb would have played, it would have been worth 2 more TD's. Same for Johnson Co. Just my opinion, and we all know what opinions are like.
  12. Thing of it is, Mitchell apperently will play for 2nd or 3rd in the conference and Avery will play for 3rd or 4th. Whole different world in 1a and 2a over there. & teams in the conference, 3 1a teams and 4 2a teams. My prediction would place Hampton finishing 3rd or fourth. The real amazing thing here is that we actually agree on something. By the way, how's your mom and dad?
  13. I never played against Etown or UC in football. we did play them in basketball. We were pretty even with UC. Elizabethton killed us. I wanted to beat them so bad, not because I hated either team, but it sure did make you feel better when you ran into them at Pizza Inn. I think you could call it pride in what you had accomplished. I think that is what is missing from sports today. Parents send their kids to schools where they think they will get noticed by some college. No pride in the community anymore. If a kid can play, a college will find them. Doesn't matter where they are.
  14. Thanks for really making me feel old. You know, the competition in the county was good then. Not many blowouts. Any team could win on any given night. Not as predictable as it is now.
  15. Jeff was the quarterback. Good one, too.
  16. When I played, I chased Tim Davis. Or was ran over by him.
  17. I always looked forward to playing Hampton. They were the team to beat when I played. Not just because they were good, and they were, in all sports, but because I played for Cloudland and they were Hampton. Same with Happy Valley. And Unaka, for that matter. But I would have to say that as intense as the rivalry was, we left it on the field. Had good friends at all the schools in the county, even Elizabethton.
  18. Pujo, I read your posts with great interest because, even though you do have your bias, (and should) you are generally very candid and respectful and accurate. True athletes will always respect their opponants. The only reason someone would want to bash another school as is being done on this board would be to compensate for their own inadequacies and shortcomings. "being from hampton my whole life and playing for the dogs I can honestly say that there is no such thing as the blue alliance hampton and cloudland are and have always been bitter rivals and happy valley is the most hated school in carter county not unaka because you only hate teams that have a chance to beat you from time to time and that's not the creekers." Olddawg, having played for Cloudland, I must say, Amen.
  19. I said that Avery was down, not out. Lost players over the past 2 years that are starting at App. State, Tusculum, and Mars Hill. Just do not have that kind of talent, so they are down. Also, yes they will be fighting for 3rd and fourth. Owen beat Mitchell Friday night. Neither team will beat Polk Co. With some big help from other teams, Avery could possibly finish second. And there is only one conf. winner. The rest play for seeds. You are correct in that the playoff system has 8 div. (2 for each classification.) This is purely for $$$$. Gotta hate a playoff system that allows teams with losing records to make the playoffs.
  20. Not worried about measuring up. Avery and Mitchell will probably be fighting for 3rd and 4th in their conference. I just noticed that when we beat a team by 3,4, or 5 touchdowns, what does that say about the condition of football in our area. Avery is considerably down, Mitchell up a little. Just a reality check, I think. Thank goodness we have 5 classifications now instead of 3.
  21. I think we need to start rethinking the definition of muffin. After watching us play the NC teams, I guess we're their "muffins". Sure we'll beat these teams over here. But the 2 NC teams are the only good teams we've played. Face it; football in our little place here is not so good.
  22. I know what you mean. I know that athletes now days are bigger, stronger, faster, etc. But I think that the overall competitiveness was much better even in the 80's. Especially in 1A. That's just my opinion and yes, I know what opinions are like.
