  1. I believe the year that South Greene was runner-up to Jackson Co. Sharee actually tore her ACL in the first few minutes of the game. The rest of the game was quite simply dismal. The next year they lost in the first round to Gibson Co. after giving up a big lead. That's the last year they have been to the 'Boro.
  2. I hope you didn't travel to Del Rio tonight. If you did, you probably missed the game since it is in Cocke Co. Here's to a good game.
  3. Actjng coach tonight was Shawn Jones, boys' assistant coach. Amy Hawk is still active assistant. This is an unfortunate situation for all in the SG community.
  4. Refs miss calls all the time but to claim bias is absurd. When a team has been as successful as SG's over the past two decades, it's natural for the other teams to become frustrated trying to find excuses for their losses. Granted they're going through a down period not being in the state tournament for three straight years, let's not downplay the hard work these girls have put in to still average 29 wins per season which is their average over the past two decades as well. Teams such as Shelbyville, Oak Ridge, Jackson Co., Livingston Academy, Clarkrange, et al who share similar traditions field similar complaints every year. Maybe when you establish such tradition, you'll get the calls too.
  5. Actually the main point here --stop blaming the refs!! Your reference to ref-bias is unfounded. Last year your suspicions were directed at South Greene specifically; now you include all Greene Co. schools as a smokescreen. Let's just face it somehow you need to ensure that only refs from Sevier Co. officiate your games from now on.
  6. Yeah I guess those refs who show bias towards the Greene Co. teams showed up in your regional semi last year with Elizabethton. The whining continues.
  7. South Greene won. 61-50 second hand info so no details.
  8. In reading the local newspaper, I didn't see any mention of Manuel. Didn't she play? Is she injured?
  9. South Greene beat Oliver Springs by 4 and lost to White Co. by 2
  10. I thought the tournament SGHS was participating in was being held at Knox Central.
  11. Barb--You are correct that SG has had girls on the team from many parts of Greene Co., two of which were coaches' daughters at the feeder schools for Chuckey-Doak. In addition, three girls from Cocke Co. have opted to play at SG in the past decade. In that time, there was also a young lady from GMS who was integral to a state championship and runner-up. But I remind you that through the years GHS has also benefited from the talents of young ladies who played at multiple county schools--Devoti, Pesja, Harmon, Richardson (transfer from SG) and many more. Coach Ricker does not have a monopoly on all the talent in the county as most of the area believes. He is a proven winner and that draws players. There have been many teams in the county and at GHS who have had more talented teams in the past and have lost simply due to poor coaching. Now you have your man. Coach Burkey is great. GHS should be thankful for his arrival so not to waste their excellent talent. We will see if South Greene's talent truly diminishes because of his presence. Maybe accusations of recruiting can be directed toward Coach Burkey. If he continues to be successful, I'm sure there will be. BTW I overheard a county high school coach in Murfreesboro whining over the fact that the best player from a neighboring county was headed Coach Ricker's way.
  12. Got to see the Seymour-SG game tonight. Must give props to the Eagles. Johnson with 4 fouls early in the 2nd but Seymour maintained the lead. Game stayed around 8 until mid-4th when Seymour extended the lead to the final difference of 17. Johnson is a great player--strong hands with soft touch, but the players #10 and #55 (the sophomore I think) were just phenomenal tonight. They are not just a one woman team. Great balance, athletic, and tall--looks like a winning mix. After seeing LA play at Christmas, I would definitely give the nod to Seymour if they were to meet again. #55 for Seymour actually reminds me some of Katrina Beechboard. SG played hard as expected and relied on their speed and penetration but Seymour's bigs were TOO BIG. Good Luck to Seymour. This SHOULD be your year.
  13. Elizabethton 58 South Greene 50 final
  14. JGarrison--the officiating argument is getting old. 600+ victories in coach Ricker's 20 year career---not due to the officiating. He's been T'd up more than any coach in history; perhaps, the only coach thrown out at the state tournament. Usually he deserves what he gets--not the most cordial guy in the world!! Good luck to PF. Play the game and let it go.
