Sorry to jump in here late but 1st off...PROPS from across the pond to my MIGHTY PIRATES!
2nd, to the notion that we need to jump up and play with the BIG BOYS...LOL. Everyone one we play darn near is bigger than we are. As it's been mentioned, we have about 230 kids, all of which are born and bred in SP. During my playing days(85-89) we played Bledsoe, Seq Co, Jasper, and Whitwell (depending on what year)that were all in a class above us. We had to travel the all over the eastern part of TN to play schools that were our size. Not to mention, we traveled into alabama to play the likes of Section, Stevenson (both biggers schools than us) and Bridgeport. Back then , Boyd wouldn't scrimmage us, must-less play us. SP earned it's reputation years ago going to play in the Civitan Bowl vs one the biggest schools in Tennesse. My uncle (a star DT on that team) tells the story, our boys were on the field looking around when those 4 big grey hound buses pulled up carring that Knox County team, Coach Beene turned to'em and said "Men, ain't but 11 of them on the field at one time". We went on to whip that team and many others since.
Football in the valley starts from the time you can walk. These JR high kids that just won the SVC will be kicking the snot out of the area schools in a couple of years. We aren't able to scan the city and pick and pull our kids in, we grow'em.
I'm in the military, stationed overseas and have been away from SP since 1989 and trust me, every Saturday I'm on the TSSAA site finding out what my PIRATES have done and look foward to the HUSTLER that is shipped to me (it's about 2 weeks behind).
If football across the state was taken as seriously as we take it in the Valley, you'd see far more kids from Tennessee playing @ the BIG TIME COLLEGE level.
