  1. Red Bank at 2A might mean that there's finally a team in the state that can compete with Alcoa in that classification.
  2. Holy crap, this might be the most pointless thread I've ever read! I take a day and a half off, and come back to find out that Oak Ridge has suddenly joined the 10 year revolution and become obsessed with Maryville. Wow. Wasn't it just a couple of years ago when all of us Maryville folks got all excited at the chance of bringing home 3 or 4 gold balls back to East TN when OR was representing this part of the state in the 5A championship? Aren't we the same team that has enjoyed a regular, friendly scrimmage against you guys and who your coach turned to for advice when taking over the helm there? We've been friends to your program, so why the vitriol toward us? Sure, our stadium may not be the most modern, but it's also far from the top of our priority list quite honestly. We invest in the kids, first as people, then as students and last as athletes. We'd rather win championships in an older stadium than lose games on the "field of dreams." Is there any way that we can get bladerunner and brandon100 their own thread so that they can just go at each other? That would be the perfect storm of nonsense and would save the rest of us from their tired bitterness.
  3. Big Papa knows all about Binfield...there was a sweet spot foul line extended on the cafeteria side. Over at Alnwick, anyplace where there wasn't a buckle in the court was considered a sweet spot. Back in my high school days, we always referred to the Heritage version of blue as "baby blue."
  4. Well obviously WB is having a tough season. Suffice it to say that the Owls should win this game. Having said that, you can be sure that the Govs will come out and bring the fight to you. I don't think they've got the tools in place right now to win against a good team, but they'll certainly give their all. Go Govs!
  5. Good game last night. I had a couple of observations: 1. WB's young QB has a ton of potential. In all my years I've never heard of a freshman starting at the varsity level at that position. I was really impressed with his poise. I think that with some time under his belt, he could really be quite a weapon. 2. The SD passing attack was solid and the QB seemed to always deliver. My lasting impression was that WB doesn't need to call it a season just yet. They've got some tools to work with. I hated to lose on homecoming, but was glad to see some pretty exciting plays. Keep your heads up Govs.
  6. I feel the Governor pride rising up for homecoming. Govs win tonight! Fight on for William Blount, our alma mater true We'll give a cheer for all the hear just look for the orange and blue (Fight! Fight! Fight!) We'll march on to victory. We'll do it if we try. So fight, fight, fight for the Governors The pride of William Blount High
  7. On its worst night the worst team from Maryville in the last 5 years would beat the best team from Clinton in the past 8 years (on its best night) handily and on a regular basis.
  8. Not that anyone was holding their breath waiting to hear what I had to say, but for whatever it's worth I've been tied up since the game and am just now getting around to commenting on it... Great game! What I saw out there Friday night was two teams forced to play a type of game that is atypical for them. AHS has had a quick strike offense for as long as I can remember, and so has Maryville. For those teams to show so much resilience in sustaining long, drawn out drives was impressive. It was impressive that each defense spent long periods of time on the field and still yielded so little paydirt. Alcoa has a couple of incredible playmakers. The scramble by the QB into the end zone was a thing of beauty. That kid could be a running back if he wanted to be. The tight end was amazing. Maryville looked more conservative than I've seen them in a really long time. Credit the Alcoa defense but also GQ for executing his gameplan. He kept it simple for most of the game, and then only once or twice used some misdirection to make it look like more of the same while getting some much needed yardage. I have read some comments on here that I'd like to respond to: - someone from Alcoa said "next year" - someone commented on the officiating - I was disappointed in it as I thought several key holding calls were let go when MHS had a chance to make big plays - many have talked about depth, and clearly ALL the boys left it all on the field Oh, and I almost forgot...Alcoa was all that they were advertised to be. They'll handily roll through 2A to another state championship this year. I still think MHS has some work to do if they want to make it 5 in a row.
  9. Hey, don't be surprised...most folks come around and find reason in the chaos eventually. I guess I could say "I told you so..." Just kidding. I've enjoyed the banter this week. I hope you enjoy the game tonight...I just hope you don't enjoy it as much as I do. Go Rebels!
  10. hey, if the shoe fits... Just kidding. I heard both coaches give great interviews this week. I didn't know that they were such good friends. I think it's great that both men realize how blessed they are to be a part of something so special.
  11. Well, I just can't believe how much the pace of this thread has slowed with the gate opening just a little more than 24 hours away... I've gone back and forth this week in what I think is going to take place Friday night. After last week, I've worried about the Rebels going into a game more than I have in a very long time. All last season I kept saying that I thought Maryville was down a little bit, but last week I went so far as to say "Maryville looks BAAAD!" So, if Alcoa is going to beat MHS, I think this is the year to do it...and particularly the time of year to do it as this team still seems to be searching for its identity and its leadership. Having said that, I can't quite bring myself to pick against the Rebels for a few reasons: 1. Recent history - Maryville just keeps winning this matchup even when Alcoa has amazingly talented teams. The MHS players "expect" to win while (no matter how confident the fans or the players there's no way to really challenge this) the Alcoa folks have to have at least a little bit of doubt as to whether they can win. 2. Coaching - This is closer than in years past, but how can you pick against GQ? 3. Motivation - All MHS is hearing EVERYWHERE is that this is the year...that would get me fired up... I actually think homefield plays against the Rebels a little bit, since it puts the pressure on them...as if carrying around that big 0 in the L column wasn't pressure enough. Nonetheless, I can't think of a good reason to pick Alcoa. I'm sure they are a great team. I'm sure they'll win 2A again, but when it all boils down to it I'm not certain that this AHS team is that much better or that this MHS is that much worse from the 2 teams that squared off last year and didn't look like a very close matchup. MHS - 21 AHS - 14
  12. I went back and re-read my posts there....I definitely didn't say anything that remotely encroached upon even implying an "i told you so." I don't mean to nitpick, but I like to keep my reputation clean /thumb[1].gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":thumb:" border="0" alt="thumb[1].gif" />
  13. "If if's and but's were candy and nuts, then we'd all have a Merry Christmas." This is why I love these forums, there's all this great hypothesizing and speculation. I've read a couple of pretty huge IF statements over the past few pages: * An alcoa fan said "if we had beaten you many years in a row, you'd be complaining about us recruiting from all over teh state, etc." That's nice, but it's such speculation because no one has any idea what we'd do if someone dominated us for a few years...just hasn't happened. * An MHS fan said "if we turn the ball over 6 or 7 times..." Does anyone know the last time we actually did turn it over that many times? * An alcoa fan said "if you turn it over that much, we'll win by 3 td's..." Are you aware that GQ has only lost by more than 2 td's once EVER? Interesting comment by Rankin in the paper. He must be drinking that Alcoa water. However, I heard an interview with GQ yesterday and he was in his classic Lou Holtz style. He was discussing the trick play against Halls and said "well, we'll probably have to run a trick play every series this week if we just want to stay in the game." Classic. I love this week.
  14. That's a good story. There's honestly no better place in the world to watch a football game (in my humble opinion) than at Notre Dame stadium. The atmosphere there is just amazing. I appreciate the fact that you say that if Maryville wins you will congratulate us and move on. That's great, and it's also not what I've experienced over many years from most of the Alcoa faithful. And it begs the question: did you actually even read my post before responding? I would invite you to do so for several reasons. First, I said essentially the same thing about congratulating and moving on, except I said it on behalf of the majority of the MHS fan base rather than just for myself. Second, at no point in time did I say Alcoa was "way out of their league." That statement would imply being overmatched in the sense of opinion. What I stated was a fact: once a year Alcoa steps "out of their league" (2A) and plays against Maryville (4A). Am I wrong or are 2A and 4A still different leagues? Third, if you go back and read posts from me over the years that I've been on this forum, I think you'll be hard pressed to find a time when I came on and said "i told you so." (You might find some of those as it relates to Morristown West...) I am not one of those fans. I have no chip on my shoulder sir, and I'm the one who earlier in this thread announced that whatever the outcome I still believe we're talking about the 2 best programs in the state...naturally I'm proud of that.
  15. That's hilarious. I just wish you had put a timeline on the loop to show that it starts, completes the cycle and then starts again at an accelerating pace as we approach game time. In February the cycle takes about 6 days to repeat. This time of year, it replays every 6 or 7 hours. I'm sure I'll experience that whole cycle at least once in the car on the way to the game, and at least twice while sitting there waiting for kickoff.
  16. Oh, I do understand the importance of the game. With regards to schedules it means nothing. With regards to $ at the gates, it means a great deal to both teams. With regards to history, rivalry and the community, it means the world. I wouldn't trade it away for much of anything. I've not in any way contended that depth does not play an important role in contributing to Maryville's success against Alcoa. However, I find it truly unfortunate that Alcoa fans play this numbers game so frequently. Unlike every other program MHS plays year in and year out, Alcoa spends 11 months and a few days a year telling us how they'll beat us next season and how we should never lose to them simply because of the numbers. Then immediately after the game, they withhold any sincere congratulations and start talking about the next year...I suppose you should be commended for your unwavering faith in your team, but I won't commend an unwillingness to humbly admit defeat rather than carrying around a built-in excuse to explain away the loss and to discredit the win. That is tactless. I can't say for sure, because it hasn't happened in so long, but should Alcoa beat MHS this Friday night or any other time they play I do believe that the vast majority of the MHS supporters I know would say "Great game. We all knew it had to happen sooner or later, and, while we wish that it hadn't happened tonight, congratulations. You were the better team."
  17. I hope 2 things: 1. That we really ARE getting the type of apparatus you described and 2. That we NEVER trade in the big sign held by the cheerleaders for a smoking helmet to run through
  18. I'm not sure that I understand the question? I get the concept of "scoreboard," but I think I missed something here... Thanks all for the info. I've only spoken with Brandon Warren briefly on a few occasions, but he is one of the most gifted athletes to ever come out of Blount County in my opinion. I used to know Mike very well, and he is one of the classiest guys I've known. If these young men are cut from the same fabric as their relatives, then I expect big things from them both on and off the field.
  19. This is the garbage that Alcoa always spews that makes me like them way less than EVERY other team Maryville ever plays. It's a no-win situation for Maryville. If we win, then we're supposed to, there are a ton of excuses, and AHS fans grumble a congratulations under their breath while beginning to promise that next year will be their year. If we lose, then it was the most significant and meaningful game ever played. How about this flawed logic with the "if alcoa had that many students..." IF you had that many students and had gone as long without losing as Maryville then you'd probably be as sick of everyone taking shots at your program as we are. As it stands however, you're streak is littered with little L's hung on you year after year when you step out of your league and play with the Red Rebels. This year may be different. It may not. Either way, we're probably talking about the 2 best programs in the state and what should be a GREAT game.
  20. Is Darryl Warren related to Brandon Warren? Is Tahrin Tyson related to Alcoa's Mike Tyson? Both Brandon and Mike were GREAT in their days at Alcoa.
  21. Gates opened up in the 4th and MHS wins 28-7. Halls qb went down and backup had no chance of bringing them back. Halls D looked tired at the end and MHS got some much needed momentum going into next week.
  22. Rebels score and convert the PAT. 14-7.
  23. 7 - 7 with about 6 to go in the 3rd. MHS made a defensive stand in their own red zone and Halls missed a field goal. The Rebels are on their best drive now on about the 15. the clock's been out and it just came back on saying 6 minutes left in the 3rd. they've corrected that now and it's actually the start of the 4th.
  24. The Rebels look BAAAAD right now...
