  1. briank@wcs.edu Veercoach you are just being nice. We lost everything. I have two sr. everyone else played jv. They are great kids though, and we are working hard. We will improve and that's our goal. Just to keep getting better.
  2. Thanks for the comments. We are down, I lost 10 seniors. All I have is a bunch of skinny, weak jrs and sophs. I have great kids, they are working hard. I just hope we can make games respectable.
  3. Great pick up for UT. I know years ago at Ausitn Peay my dad (Lake Kelly) would love to have had him, and dad had some of the best talent in the country. Dotson has a nack for little things, and he works incredibly hard. I think he will do fine at UT, just don't get homesick. Now isn't it a rule that when a player commits, he can't play against schools that begin with the letter C. I am going to check into that. Just kidding. See you soon Matt.
  4. I think that would be my son. He is not at Centennial yet, and he is 6'5. He is an eight grader at Heritage middle. He is not bad, has a way to go yet. It is neat to see that someone likes him though. Thanks
  5. Things have changed, we now need to play away on either of those two dates. So we are looking to go to a Hall of champions game on the 19th or 20th.
  6. Everyone should see "Year of the Bulls" Its a documentary about a state contending team in Miami.
  7. Wow! Excellent post. It all makes sense. Feeder programs is another factor that helps high school programs. Even smaller pools if developed earlier and in line with the high school programs can over come the numbers. Once again, just some thoughts.
  8. No one yet, we are just looking for one team Boys and Girls, JV also, for Friday or Sat.
  9. Youre exactly right. They double the enrollment. St. X is currently at 1414. KHSAA use the state BOE figures, and the state doubles the number for their purposes.
  10. I am just throwing some things out to think about, and to get some input from the masses out there. I don't imply anything. I say bring em all on. I will play anyone at any time. I have beaten some and lost to some. I use to schedule all of the private schools. We are most generally treated first class. I have alot of friends who coach at private schools. They make my teams tougher. I have had to adjust our schedule lately because of new schools in our district. There were some great comments back to me. The entrance exam is a very good point. It does cut the pool down. And the person was right about the open zoned public schools, it can make a difference in the pool. My info on St. X came straight from the KHSAA web site, I could have read it wrong however, I will check it again and correct myself when I have time. Some of you are very sensitive on this issue, and don't know me and the way I look at things. Therefore: I don't mean to offend so I will stop posting.
  11. Would things be different if private schools had a limited athlete pool to choose from like public schools do? For example, I have about 150 boys each year that come to me as freshman. That is all, no more. They come from two middle schools. I can't get any more from anywhere else. Those same 150 boys could go to one of several private schools in middle TN. From 15 min. away to an hour and a half away. As could the countless number of middle schoolers in Nashville, Rutherford, and the rest of middle TN. Imagine the numbers, Imagine the possiblities. The size of your athlete pool makes a huge difference. St. X school in Louisville has around 2500 boys. They compete at a high level in everything, every year. What a pool to pick from. Just some things to think about.
  12. We would like to host an HOC game at Centennial on the 19th(Fri) or the 20th (Sat) JV boys and girls also. Call or E-mail. Brian Kelly 615-472-4270 briank@wcs.edu
  13. Would it be accurate to say that the majority of students who attend the larger private schools, live in a proximity to the school that would logically send them to that school? In other words, do most BA students live close to BA, etc?
  14. BigDogDaddy My name is Brian Kelly, I coach on Centennials football staff. I am also the boys and girls basketball coach here at CHS. I have been seeing you slam us for some time now, and it is enough. This board is for the praise and promotion of high school athletes. I would like to meet you, and discuss this obvious hatred of our coaching staff. Don't reply on this board, simply introduce yourself to me sometime. Use this board for what it was intended. I will not reply on this subject again.
  15. You make great points. My concern is a statement that will make a kid think that high school ball is not important. cobrafans first statement would make a kid think that. The article in USA today came from the best 17 and 18 year old players in the game today. I am very familiar with and do support some AAU and other post season programs. My son is a player on a very good U13 team. I played myself. My daughter has played. My point is: Don't talk to the elite when comparing somthing to average players, which is what most high school teams are made of.
  16. What about the multitude of players who are not going to play college ball? Most high school teams are made up of those kids. AAU, YBOA, travel, elite etc. are made up of kids who are more than likley going to play college ball any way. None of these coaches take what they are given an turn it into more than what they are. They use what the players already have. The article you speak of comes from the super powers of high school and prep school basketball. Its not hard to agree that all of those guys are great and are going on. What is hard is making one of those guys out of someone just average. Which is what high school coaches do every try to do every day.
  17. What I am seeing as a high school coach, is a lot of kids not spending time in the weight room in the off season. They think that playing AAU will get the job done. It is true the more you play, the better you get. I believe in that, my players will play close to fourty games this summer. Talent and skill are out there all over the place. What is not out there is size, speed, and strength. Play all the AAU, YBOA, YMCA, and what ever else you can come up with. Just get in the weight room. I had three kids this year that were looked at by a lot of colleges, and all the responses where the same. Not ATHLETIC enough. Size, speed and strength. I played D1 ball and I remember how physical it was. It is worse now. The college game is a wrestling match. If you can't get open, you can't score. If you can't guard people you won't play. If AAU coaches want to help us all (players, parents, each other) do two things. 1. check report cards of all of you players, if you see any F's, do not let them play. 2. Get your players, who are our players also, into a weight room. If you don't know much about it find someone who does. If you don't care about it then get out of coaching. You aren't helping these kids until you give them what they need. Our weight room is open 2:45 to 5:00 every day, come and see me I will give you a program.
  18. The Perry kid is one of the best open court players I have seen since Waddy at Franklin. If he gets the outlet, or a long reb, or loose ball, somthing good is going to happen. He has the best body control and court sense. If he is back to full speed, he will make an impact in the tournament.
  19. Does anyone remember a guy named Calvin Garrett. He played at Nashville East, Austin Peay, transfered to Oral Roberts, then with the Lakers for a while. He needs to be on the list. You young guys don't know what a jumpshot is unless saw this guy shoot. When the Lakers wanted Larry Bird Guarded, Calvin did the best job.
  20. I am.........oh, you mean high school players. My bad. I do have a wicked game of horse.
  21. tknights, you are right. I will take one more second and an OT any day over where we are now. But that is gone, and we still have a lot of work to do. I don't say much on here, but I do want to say one thing to the Hickman folks. You do have an outstanding team. However you and us have to do one thing that will get us where we want. Keep on winning. Coaches in our loop do give you all very much respect. What you want is for it to come from the stands and the media. We both have to win to do that. Until we do that we will be a "concern" to the historically strong teams in the area. 11AAA is down as far as size speed and stregth. When you look at us(CHS) physically, you might think we are a JV team, but you will know we were there after you have played us. I do think the teams overall are playing harder than ever before. The simple fact remains, however, we do have to advance beyond the first round of the region before we will get the type of respect you are looking for. That usually means beating the other side 12AAA, and that is an extremely hard thing to do. You guys (HCHS) be proud of what you are doing and keep working to do more. Its going to get very interesting soon.
  22. Just somthing interesting to note. ( and this just my opinion, which really isn't woth too much ) The big difference in KY and TN. In TN, the biggest schools are usually the best. There are exceptions, however the 1800-2000 student schools are predominantly the best in each major sport. In KY you will have schools like Mason Co. last years state champs and will give it another run this year, who have enrollments of only 700-800, and gyms that hold around 6,000 that will be full for every game they play. Check the records, and I could be wrong, but I think its the bigger school in each class that traditionally wins championships in TN. It often does not work out that way in KY. Its a numbers game. Go figure.
  23. Hey leadoff, I am the coach from Centennial. I couldn't follow what you were saying about me in your post on the 11AAA topic. Could you explain a bit more. Also, the official sent our administrator over to guys. We actually thought you were very normal. Compared to the 2000 we had for the Franklin game the night before, you all were very well behaved. As for your team, they are the real deal, and they had alot to do with the way we played. A bit more time and everyone had better watch out for those guys, they can go. The Hickman Co. deal is simple. Its all Geographical. Just give it time, and I think all of middle TN will know who you guys are. I know, and do give much respect. BK
  24. I will discuss anything with parents, as long as their son is in on the conversation. Usually problems occur when Jr. is telling mom and dad wrong or exaggerated info. When everyone is present, this can't occur. So far since I have been doing this for about 4 years now. I have had no discussions about playing time, points, shots etc.
  25. The NCAA has a broad defintion of the assist. It does not matter how many dribbles the scorer takes, and it does not even have to be the last pass to the scorer. It all depends on the intent of the originator of the play. They get very technical in their statisticians manual . http://ncaa.com/library/statistical/basket...llStatsMan.pdfl
