New grad requirements starting this fall are 4 credits of English, 4 credits of math (students must be enrolled in a math class each of their 4 years), 4 science credits, 2 foreign language credits (some wiggle room here but too involved to discuss), 4 social studies credits, personal finance course, 1.5 credits of wellness (various ways to earn the .5) plus electives. Also, the Gateway tests are a thing of the past beginning with this freshman class. They will be required to take 8-10 end of course tests before they graduate. I'm guessing these things have changed the look of many master schedules across the state. Not only will this freshman class have a new set of requirements, but schools will also have to be sure they are meeting the requirements for the other 3 classes in their buildings. Could mean some thinking out of the box to make sure everyone is getting what they need. Best of luck to principals and counselors everywhere!

Houston County is on a nine weeks grading system. The first and last nine week periods are PE II and the players receive a letter grade; they fall before the season/official practice begins and at the end of the year. The second and third nine weeks are during the season, so no letter grade is given. The kids receive grades of Pass/Fail, and these are counted as "in house" elective type credits used to help meet the 28 that HC requires for graduation. The P/F grades do not count toward athletic eligibility. All that will be changing this year though. Because of new graduation requirements, 4th block for basketball will only be offered first semester. The kids will be taking 4 classes during second semester and all practice will be after school.

Coach Young has told his team that he is staying with them. No knock on the guys' program, but I think Coach Young has enjoyed coaching the girls -- not to mention that he is returning 4 starters from last year's team. Only he knows his reasons for not taking the boys job. I'd have to think he was considered for it. I know he went with the guys team to camp; I think that was just to help out more than anything. As for Coach Moore and his kids... they're not living in Houston County. If he were hired as the coach and they opted to enroll in Houston County but not move, would they lose any eligibility? His sons have already established athletic eligibility at Montgomery Central, and his oldest daughter will be a freshman.

Aren't Coach Moore's kids playing at Montgomery Central? Wouldn't that be a conflict of interest or something -- especially if Houston County is still playing Montgomery Central during the regular season?

Good luck to McEwen from Houston County. Does anyone know if it will be broadcast on the radio and if so, what station? Can't make it to Eagleville tonight, but would love to keep up with the action!

I was at the 10A tourney. I witnessed the filmer being approached and questioned by the tournament director. I also have it on good authority that there is a tape in Houston Co. with 2 quarters of the 10A consolation game on it. It was reported to the TSSAA, and maybe nothing will be done, but why cast suspicion on a program that could end up hurting it -- especially at tournament time? Just doesn't make sense to me. Maybe there was nothing to it, but why risk it?

The road runs in both directions. Wasn't it just a couple of years ago that WHH hosted the district? It's no fun for us traveling to WHH either. Guess we should just be thankful that both our teams are still playing and that we're both healhy enough to make those long trips. Thanks. When will things be finalized as far as seedings go? I saw that the tournament is scheduled to start this Friday. Is that true? I don't think 10A tourney starts until next week.
