  1. Pretty obvious, they got tired. McMinn plays the same 5 the entire game, Cumberland switched in 8-10 players. I have a feeling McMinn won't make it past WV 1st game of district. It's pretty obvious they don't play like a team.
  2. And then there were two as Baylor names Massey head coach. Anybody heard anything on the other two?
  3. You are right, I should give coach Tarver more time. They do have better athletes than almost everyone they play though. I hope he can learn to utilize them. Maybe another year is all he needs. They were one of youngest teams in region last year.
  4. For that matter, Bradley-McMinn-and Walker Valley are all very good. Cumberland has been a little lucky in the fact they haven't lost a region game sooner. That is no knock on them, just a testament to this region. Any of these 5 teams are good enough to win the region tournament, only problem is that one of five won't make it. As it stands now WV and McMinn would play in 1st round of district with loser being done.
  5. Howard probably has the most talent, but until they learn to run more than 1) Iso 2) Sweep 3) FB Dive 4) Throw it as far as you can then they will lose several games. The games they won last year were won on talent alone. This is a program that could be more than a sleeping giant if the right coach took over.
  6. jb is right, job was not offered to Lamar. He's a good guy and a good coach though, I hope he gets his shot soon- if that's what he wants.
  7. I would like to add 1) officials please call the jump stop a walk- it is and always has been according to the rules. I hate seeing this, now you even have players do a jump stop-head fake, take a step and shoot the ball- walk, walk, walk, walk. 2) Add a shot clock to high school basketball. 3) Get hot, young women to do Super Bowl halftime show- not raggedy, old men.
  8. I agree with you, Meigs overachieved last year. My picks are 1)Notre Dame 2) Polk 3) Howard 4) Meigs 5) East Ridge 6) Grundy 7) Central 8) Tellico 9) Sequoyah
  9. It won't even be close to as good as last year. polk lost way too many seniors including the entire starting backfield. They may be more versatile, but they won't be better.
  10. who takes longer to find a coach McMinn Central or Baylor...or for that matter, throw in Tellico Plains. Supposedly Central is choosing between Brandon Derrick and Heath Davis. Supposedly Baylor is choosing between Massey and Jones. Supposedly Tellico interviewed a guy from Miami, Fla...talk about opposite ends of the earth. Anybody hearing anything new on these fronts? Any different names? What in the world is taking so long to name coaches? The difference in winning and losing is the work put in during the offseason. We are running out of offseason daily.
  11. I think that post about staying was in reference to Holtcamp not Dunkle.
  12. Each school is allowed two volunteer coaches, just call the head coach at high school and see who would like some help.
  13. McMinn won, I listened on radio.
  14. I guess Tellico is better than all these teams as they beat Central by 17 last time out.
  15. Each school in state is allowed two non-faculty coaches. There is a loophole however. If a person has coached in this state for at least 3 years or has been a non-faculty coach at your school for three years- then he doesn't count against your two non-faculty coaches. This is how some schools seem to have several more non-faculty coaches. I don't have a dog in the fight, so I don't know how many years Ron has been coaching or been at Bearden. To be a head coach at Bearden though, he would have to teach at a Knox County school.
  16. I must admit, I missed that little dig as well. I guess since Derrick's name wasn't listed it made it easy to overlook. However, don't bring yourself down to that level just because one poster does. It just makes you look bad as well. I think everyone should just keep all negativity about either of the candidates out of the discussion. If we aren't careful then the players (who I know read this) won't respect either coach before they are given a chance. Like I said, I think both coaches are well qualified. With that said, there is something that needs to be mentioned. A head coach is only as good as his assistants and his players. If either guy can't bring in a few of his own guys to help him turn the program around, it may be a long road. There is some talent at Central and the upcoming freshmen are a good group as well, but I'm hearing they are having trouble finding a spot for one coach much less a couple of guys. This is part of the reason a coach hasn't been named yet.
  17. Who has slammed Derrick? I can't find a negative word about him. I was one that mentioned that this has become pi$$ing contest, and I was referring to people choosing between Brandon and Heath- so I guess I was referee for him. Like I said, either would be a good choice and I could make a strong argument for both. Let's just hope they get it right, and more importantly that they hurry up so both men can go on about their business.
  18. I've got it. I'll call you this afternoon on my way home.
  19. I can tell you why that one is taking a while. If you want me to, I'll call you tonight and let you know why.
  20. Well Chattcity, since you seem to have all the answers- who's going to get the job? NFL teams have hired guys quicker than this, what's the big delay?
  21. Don't know if he even applied, but Cocke County should consider Lamar Brown- I believe he is the defensive coordinator at Morristown West.
  22. tnwareagle, I think they were talking about last year. I agree the officials were bad the first game, but I thought they called a pretty good game last night. Whoever is in charge of the association should really have thought better than put the AD at Ocoee Middle School as one of the refs though. That puts him in quite a predicament. With that said, I think he did a good job. I really thought the difference in the two games were pretty easy to see. In first game, Anna Thomas missed several easy buckets that could have really helped WV to a win. She played much better in 2nd game, but A. butler wasn't her usual self as she looked pail and sick to me. If she had played as well as she did in first game, then i believe WV would have won last night. With all that said, I don't think any of the top 5 teams in district are that much better than the other. it just depends on who is playing well that particular night. I have to give Cumberland credit as they seem to do just enough to win, which is saying something considering quality of teams in this district. They are not a lock to win district or region tournament though and any of these 5 teams could win region. Problem is....one of the teams won't make it out of district tournament. We'll see who's playing their best ball at right time of year, until then.....quit hating on other teams- they are all good.
  23. Some of you are turning this into a pi$$ing contest and it shouldn't be that way. Both Davis and Derrick are good men and good coaches. They are also friends, and either would be happy for the other if they get this job. It's silly to try and determine who would stay and who might leave if given this job. Both have obviously left the area. Sometimes, that's the best thing a young coach can do to learn more about the game and himself. The only way either of them leave Central if given the head coaching position is if 1) They are asked to leave after doing a lousy job or 2) They win big and pursue a better job. Either way you can't be too unhappy. If they lose, everyone will be glad they left, and if they win- just be happy you had those good years. FWIW, I don't see either of them coming in and leaving after 1-2 years, so this shouldn't be a deciding factor. Just trust the powers to be to make the right choice after hearing the interviews. Like I said, I think both of these guys are qualified and the community just needs to get behind whichever one is selected. If the community is split and chooses sides then Central will be the big loser, not Brandon or Heath. United we stand, divided we fall. It will take more than one good coach to make Central into a powerhouse, it takes a whole community effort.
