  1. Actually, Mac, all three schools (Howard, Brainerd, and Tyner) have quality guard play returning. Well, I should say guards that played significant time returning. Correct me if I'm wrong, but Howard only loses Quick, Brainerd doesnt lose any guards, and Tyner doesn't lose any either. It's all academc though.
  2. You're correct Oak HIll does have a B-Team. It used to be referred to as the Red Team.
  3. Any team that shoots the ball as well as Livingston has a chance. You couple that with a guard that can break down the defense and elevate the play of his teammates and that gives them a better than average chance. There may be an issue if shots aren't falling because they are not necessarily a post-oriented team. However, if shots aren't falling, any team will struggle!
  4. Classy post. I was leaning towards staying in the Chattanooga-area for a game here, but I'm starting to lean towards making that drive to see this one. Should be a great basketball atmosphere.
  5. Nah Big. Saw them play earlier in the year in Cleveland. Some players may have improved since it was at the beginning of the year. I was impressed with how they played, but guard play would be my concern vs. Brainerd if I was an Upperman fan. The teams that I think are pretty good I follow their season to get a feel of TN H.S. B-ball. I also follow the posts on here, which are mostly opinions disguised as facts. But its pretty well known who the go to guys are on that team.
  6. Brainerd: Upperman's guard play isn't good enough. One wing scores the ball pretty well and one post leads them in scoring, but if the guards don't play well it won't matter.
  7. I love your brashness! I do wonder if you would have been so willing to play them with your season on the line (like in the semi-final, instead of the final when you're guaranteed another game). You have to admire someone willing to play the 3rd ranked team in the state with the season on the line.
  8. That's an excellent point T-Mac. I would like for the supporters of both schools to stop yelling at them on the court and yell at them regarding their performance or lack thereof in the classroom. That's where support & guidance is needed most. Coach McGary & Coach High can manage the game on the court well enough. A lot of fans confuse players that (unfortunately) pay them any attention at all!!! Outside of reminding players to do the fundamentals (blockout, get back on defense, slide your feet, hands up, etc.), fans should not yell out any instructions at all.
  9. I totally agree with you on the Hixson comment T-Mac. I was at the Hixson-Howard game @ Howard when Howard pulled it out at the end. Hixson seemed to play pretty inspired that night, but I also saw Hixson play East Ridge & was wondering what in the world happened? Seems like their capable but inconsistent. I didn't catch the Howard-Hixson matchup during the district tournament, but I was told that Randy Boyd didn't play & their head coach wasn't "available" either. Probably didn't affect the outcome but may have made a difference in the the ugly score.
  10. Yeah, that was an oversight on my part, although from previous posts I get the sense that they sometimes play a little selfish at times.
  11. I think Brainerd will advance to the sub-state, possibly even host the game for the following reasons: 2. Howard, Tyner, & Hixson are in the same bracket, which means an early exit for two of those teams. While Howard has won each matchup with Hixson & Tyner, Tyner has played them well each game & basically gave them the game the 2nd time. Howard should be favored to win over either of them, but Tyner could pull an upset & face Brainerd in the championship. 3. Brainerd has beat Tyner 3 times this year & Tyner hasn't played well in any of them. Brainerd didn't play well in the 1st one, but they played well enough to win. If things unfold that way Brainerd could host a substate. However, Howard has had Brainerd's number in the same sense that Brainerd has had McMinn's & Tyner's. If the two meet up, it'll be interesting to see how both teams respond. All speculation of course.
  12. Brainerd does deserve some credit. They've competed well in big games and if it weren't for some poor free throw shooting nights and some TO's they might have won the 1st game vs. Howard and both against Austin-East. Still can't side with you on knocking other teams in the area, like Baylor, Tyner, and Central. Baylor will step out and compete. Central beat Red Bank (w/o Coach Cherne), and Tyner beat Red Bank twice (once w/o Coach Cherne). Brainerd lost to Red Bank (w/ Coach Cherne). Brainerd is better than people give them credit for but no need to knock other teams to prove your point. Just put it on the court. By the way, My vote is for Walker Valley...deep, experienced, & shoots the daylight out of the ball!
  13. I overheard some guys saying that the Red Bank/ Tyner games on Saturday will begin earlier than what's on the schedule. Does anybody have confirmation of this, and if so, what time does the boys' jv play. Thanks.
  14. I remember that with the players from City. The PG from Brainerd isn't new though. He had a broken arm or something. He played JV last year. I think the Fred situation is a lot of what's wrong with H.S. sports. No loyalty to a school. "I'm only thnking about myself and of course I know more than the coach /roflol.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":roflol:" border="0" alt="roflol.gif" /> ."
  15. BHS, I'm quite sure you misunderstood the msg. you're referring to. This topic is not about the Tyner/ Brainerd game or the Howard/ Brainerd game, but to make you aware of my stance regarding high school games: I have certain players on several teams that I would like to succeed, but I'm a fan of Chattanooga basketball. Other than that, I don't have a dog in the fight. So when Brainerd played Tyner, they did what they stepped on the floor to do, Win! So no, its not Brainerd's fault about the schedule. Brainerd also played the night before, which could have affected their play. None of that changes the facts that were mentioned in my previous post.
  16. I would say his natural position is small forward, but at the H.S. level he can move up to a 2 for a period of time and also down to the 4 without hurting ya.
  17. Representing the Chattanooga-area; Nick Ross- Red Bank Kelvin Clay- Red Bank Travis Jones- Tyner Dameion Suttles- Tyner Randy Boyd- Hixson There's also a kid from McCallie that's pretty good. Don't recall the name.
  18. Once again, I have to agree with you T-Mac. Come- on BHS. You can't pick yourself up by putting others down! The players you're speaking of are marginal at best. In the Tyner game (I was there), Brainerd played a team (Tyner)that played out of character from their previous games (at least 30 TO's) and was playing their 4th road game (Sweetwater, 21st Century, Sequoyah, and Brainerd, somebody correct me if I'm wrong) in 5 days. Not Brainerd's problem, but let's keep things in perspective. You won by 5 pts., and Tyner also missed free throws down the stretch, not to mention the questionable technical foul handed out after Tyner came back. The call was so questionable that most Brainerd fans reacted because they thought the tech was called on Fred Sturdivant, to the gym's surprise it was called on the Tyner player (can't recall his name)! T-Mac, Tyner did manage to beat McMinn Central by about 20 pts. That's a quality win in any season because of the strong coaching & tradition there (They only lost 2 seniors from last year's district championship team).
  19. You're right T-Mac, I should excuse the turnovers, considering the Brainerd game was the 1st game of the year for Howard. In my humble opinion, Fred going to Brainerd & not so knowledgeable fans are examples of how things gave gone wrong in high school sports. Players are not as dedicated to schools as in the past; only thinking about their playing time and stats. There used to be pride in putting on your team's uniform & a player would fight tooth & nail not to go to a rival school. With that being said, schools will try to adjust to what they are doing and several factors could compensate for athleticism and hustle. Not saying that I want it to happen, just being real. Howard's ability to make their own adjustments will determine their how far they go. I think you already do this, but do your best to keep those fans in check so that Moose can focus on coaching & not the opinions of wannabees & hasbeens /thumb[1].gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":thumb:" border="0" alt="thumb[1].gif" />
  20. I agree with your most important points Alex. Howard is well coached and there appears to be a high level of discipline on their team. Which will win them a lot of ball games. My reference to speed didn't imply a pressing defense. It was to indicate that they can cover a lot of ground fast, which most teams cannot simulate in practice (speed, athleticism, however you want to put it). So we essentially agree on those points. I've only seen them play twice, but your reference to turnovers and free throws isn't totally accurate, especially versus Brainerd. Jury is still out on the turnover & free throw issues.
  21. Thanks for the info. Does BEarden have a team that can compete with them?
  22. Is this game definitely on the schedule? Seems like I remember the TSSAA having an issue with TN schools playing schools like Oak HIll that didn't play under a governing body like the TSSAA. Last time I remember Oak HIll playing a TN team was around 1994 when they lost to Science HIll in Johnson City, TN.
  23. I agree. They're going to have to because teams will catch on to what they are doing and attempt to prepare for them. The problem most teams will have in their preparation is that they can't simulate the speed in practice, so alot of times it does no good.
