  1. WOW..........................UNBELIEVABLE............................... THE OLD SAYING IS TRUE, OPINIONS ARE LIKE ARM PITS (OR WHATEVER), EVERYONE HAS THEM, AND THEY ALL STINK.......................... I guess this is like when you are married for a while........everyone thinks your wife is hot but you. I dont have a dog in this race....My kids are long gone, and I dont even live in White House....but all I hear is how good their coaching staff is. I wonder, what do fans base their opinion on when they make such statements? Practice everyday? Film? Unbelievable!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Is this #12 the coaches son, nephew, or grandson. Is he related to the principal, another teacher, what? Is there some nepotism, or favoritism that we don't know about? Do you honestly think the coaches randomly make such decisions? They obviously based this decision on something they have seen. Isnt this the same coaching staff that has won countless region championships? Isnt this the same staff that has led them to 20+ consecutive playoff appearances, including several semi finals, and a state championship? Has there been a big turnover on the coaching staff? I know Gallatin has, maybe there is something here you know, that I don't. Please tell me!!!!!!!!!!! To me, the most accurate statement in your quote would have been "I dont know why White House has chosen to pass so much", and just left it at that. Because the fact is, you dont know. Your knowledge of football probably consist of coaching some pre-adolescent pee-wee league, or worse yet, listening to analysis of football on TV, where players are recruited or drafted. Im sure standing around the water cooler at work, everyone thinks you know a lot about coaching football, because of the jacket you bought your self that says coach, or the monotonus (sp?) pompous ramblings about any and every topic that is mentioned. I'm sure you are glad that coaches cant come to your work, and stand in your little cubicle, and belittle and ridicule every decision you make. My daddy taught me, "Better to keep your mouth closed, and people think you an idiot, than to open it, and remove all doubt." Too bad you arent my brother. No, on second thought, thank god you arent.
  2. What does this mean? Only read the paper, in what way were the coaches intimidated?
  3. My advice, if they are gonna keep a 32 team play-off format, would be to allow the top two teams in each region keep the top two seeds, then go to somekind of mathematical formula for the next 16 places. Points by class of the teams you beat, A-6 AA-9 AAA-12 AAAA-15 AAAAA-18 (for example) and then add bonus points for teams they beat in their class or bigger. Total, divide by games, done. You could then win your way in within the region, or win your way on strength of schedule. Many states use a formula something like this, and if Im not mistaken, Tennessee did at one time too. I guarantee, it would eliminate the bottom feeders, and perhaps reward the strongest regions with more than 4 play-off spots. It would also make for some great early round inter-region games. Just a thought
  4. If the only reason you dont fly to away games is because there arent enough 1st class seats for your entire staff, then you might be............................................
  5. Ok, I know there were a lot better ones, but I tried, and was growing weary of a great room gone bad. Thought I might try to spur the creative juices of those truly talented at this
  6. If your offensive coordinator scratches off plays from his call sheet each time they score, then you might..........................................................
  7. If your man in motion just continues laterally to the sideline, to get the x-point tee, then you might be a ......................................................
  8. If you go to the officials, and self report any penalties they might have missed on a play, then you might be a ......................................................
  9. If your coaches trade your game film, complete with cut-ups, and a self-scout breakdown, for fuzzy polaroids of some of their plays, then you might be a..........
  10. If your coaches in the press box invite the opponent's press box coaches to sit with them in the press box, then you might be................

  13. ok, great responses and I appreciate them. However, my first initial question revolved around it being "obsolete" for lack of a better term. Saw alot of defense about teams that won with it (ie Cleveland), but my question was not could you win with it. If you win the state championship, you have horses. My question was, if it is so great, why dont the college or pros run it. I've always heard the pros dont run option because the QB takes a beating, and is too valuable to lose that way. But in the Wing T, he doesnt really. So why not run it? Speed of defenses at that level, too easily schemed and read? Somebody help me, I still dont really understand.
  14. Thanks! I realize that alot of teams are successful with it. But Ive heard that Goodletsville ran the Single Wing into the 80's, and was successful with it. I realize that with the right talent, anything could be successful. I guess what I am saying, is that so many teams in the state run that offense, like it is magic or something. Doesn't Hillsboro run the Wing T. And they are successful. But, I guess my question isnt can you be successful with it, but doesnt it seem like a lot of teams just roll over teams all season long, then, struggle in big games? Im pretty old, but I remember playing against single wing, Straight T, the veer (the Wing T of the 70's), wishbone, etc. But everything runs in cycles, people see how to defend it, and then kinda goes out. I guess my point is great teams have success because of good talent. I dont know, maybe I should just stick to being a casual observer (ex-jock), and leave the opinions to the experts.

    Wing T ?

Just a question? Does anyone consider the Wing T an "obsolete" offense? I understand the concept of misdirection, and concealment of the football, but it seems to me that it has its greatest effect against the poorer teams, (don't know if it is coaching, talent, or a combination of both). I know Trousdale has abandoned it, and Portland is 0-3 with it versus Livingston. I guess coaches coach what they know, but if it were such a great offense, wouldn't SOMEBODY in college or Pro's run it. It seems very predictable (the guards take you to every play), and seems that you always start running laterally with your best players. Also, it seems most effective when you have two great running threats on the outside, a good fullback, a great TE, good lineman, and an exceptional talent at quarterback. Given this personnel, wouldn't any offense be pretty effective? Im no coach, but would some of those who make their living coaching offer an opinion.
  16. Am i missing something? Are they how good? What started this thread? Somebody help me here!
  17. Heard a great quote once, seems appropriate: Willie Shoemaker couldnt win the KY Derby on a Donkey, but a Sumo wrestler couldnt win it on Secretariat. In my humble opinion, one is no more important than another (coaching/talent) Takes a combination. I think that is the point of the quote!
  18. Don't have a horse in this race, but I couldnt agree more with the praise heaped on these two men. From an outsider, who loves HS football, the most impressive thing about these two men is their longevity as assistants, and their ability to change with personnel, and their opponents. For years, a 50 slant and angle defense. And the two tight end and power I running game was infamous around Middle Tennessee. Now, I gather from what I read, that they are more of a spread it out, open it up philosophy. A guy at work tells me that they have thrown it more in games the last 6 or 7 years, than they did the previous 10 or so, including practice and warm-up. Glad to see quality coaching for young men, especially since my sons are grown and gone, and lost interest in football after Jr. High.
  19. Not to appear totally ignorant, but unless the state grant for the position of energy czar is less than the $15,000 saved, wouldnt the state of Tennessee be ahead to just write a check for the $15,000 to the school board? I don't know, but most administration positions are 40k plus. I had accounting classes in college, seems to me that doesnt quite add up.
  20. Wow Joe Namath: You think George Bush is responsible for Cheatham County's unwillingness to fund public education? Wow! It sure seems like if that were the case, there would be a lot less football being played in a lot more counties across the nation. Last time I checked, this situation is unique to Cheatham County alone, at least in this state. But hey, what do I know. With reasoning like that, I can see why you are so proud to be part of an educational system with such great leadership in the central office. by the way, great superbowl versus the colts
  21. Gerry Bertier: At the risk of jumping on the pile here, I think you know not of what you speak. I love to hear guys who have signed up for military service talk about what they will do, or how they will react in the heat of combat. Although I believe you truly speak from the heart, until you are in the situation, you don't know. Alot of people say they will never get divorced, but there sure are a lot of them happening. The Christian walk line was totally inappropriate, but I'll just let that go. I think the point you miss, and I think Truline danced around it, is that All teachers and coaches know that they will never be justly compensated financially for their hard work. However, I feel that it isnt the loss of the supplement that is the point here, but the total lack of recognition, no, the TOTAL DISRESPECT shown toward these coaches who have, thru great personal sacrifice, committed themselves to the ideals of which you speak. Im sure this decision isnt easy for these men to make, however, you cannot condemn them. It is much easier to make hypothetical decisions, then to actually make them. As for your final question about why older people question 18, 19, and 20 year olds, remember asking that question, and then 20 years from now you will laugh at yourself for ever wondering. When I left for college, I thought my father was the biggest idiot in the world, and had no idea how things were "now-a-days". When I was 30, I knew who the idiot was, and marveled at just how smart my dad was. It is basically the same reason car insurance is higher for 16 year old then for 35 year olds. No substitute for experience. And we know we arent 10 foot tall and bullet proof. And every now and then, we shut up, listen, and learn something. I know these examples are kinda lame, but I am trying give you something tangible that you can understand.
  22. My first post, done alot of reading, but never felt the need to contribute: My college coach told me, when I graduated and he knew I wanted to coach for a living: Defensively, if you have one player, head and shoulders above the rest, play him at Free (eraser). If you have two, play them at end. The biggest mistake he saw HS coaches make was to put the best player at LB, so he could run the field. However, in his opinion, to turn in or stretch the play was most important, or that is exactly what your best player would end up doing, running the WHOLE field. If you felt your ends were solid, play your best player at LB. Offensively, according to him: 1) Tailback was a priority - Had to Have a quality back 2) Quarterback - If you had two, you should play your best here 3) Tight End - Secure the off-tackle hole, hook the end to run outside, hardest to cover of all the receivers (play action passing) 4) Fullback - allows double team at the POA, one on one blocking between FB and defensive man (off-tackle kickout/Isolation) 5) Center - take your best blocker and he becomes your worst, the minute you put him at center (his quote, not mine) Few can step and snap the ball simoultaneously, and for a split second, you are blocking 1 handed, especially to your snapping side. I know alot of people thought the question stupid, So they will probably think the answer was just as stupid (or the guy making it). However, hope this helps.
