I've been around HS football for several years and I've had the pleasure to watch each of these two players play a few times. Mcmurray is a great running back. He could be on his way to being a great football player. Herndon IS a great football player. I believe this award looks for the best, all-round football player. If it were only about rushing yards it would be called the "Running Back of the Year" award. It's for the "Mr. Football". I'll agree, Mcmurray carries Page and they would struggle without him but he noramlly only plays offense. If you take a player that punts, holds for PATs, returns kick-offs, returns punts, has 20 + carries a game, and seldom comes off the field on defense, this is what an "all-round" football player is. I'm sure both are 4.0 students and both are great guys off the field. But if I'm not mistaken, Herndon had this same type year last year in his first year as a RB and lost the award to a senior back that had less rushing yards. Again, both guys are fun to watch and I'd have to say that Mcmurray would have to be the odds-on favorite for his senior year but looking at Herndons two year accomplishments as a senior, he deserves it.
