  1. Started late, as a sophomore... 10th: wrestled 112, weighed 109 (couldn't beat the solid senior we had at 106) 11th: 112, cut from 120 12th: 112, cut from 125 Now: about 145. should be 130 or so.
  2. Anybody got any comment on this? Mark is a great guy, as you mentioned. This seems like a great thing for TN wrestling, and an especially good chance to make some progress towards things like the Double-Elimination at State, Better Regional alignments, etc. What does everyone think?
  3. That is indeed a special accomplishment for Zac Brown--especially for someone that never set foot on a mat in High School!!!!
  4. That would be because they also got the school wrong..... in 2001, Rusty Blackmon pinned COOKEVILLE'S Chris SHEA in 22 seconds.
  5. Do the last two combined (D1 and D2) state titles (96 & 97) not mean anything to you? Ralph Gabriel is an Excellent coach, and has the hardware and jewelry to prove it.
  6. If I'm not mistaken (and odds are, I am--58/Amnicola used to turn me every which direction but the correct one when I lived there).... There used to be a place called either "durty Nelly's" or the "Durty Parrot" that wasn't a terrible little place. I think it would be back down the Amnicola direction, going back into town from Harrison. You may have to get back up on 153 to get headed the right way. hope this helps....
  7. Hey, Everybody!!! Look at this!!! it's a Dead Horse!!! and there's a stick right next to it!!! what do you say we all take turns Beating it? The only opinion that matters on this subject belongs to Ronnie Carter. And since he isn't even interested in righting the Regional Setup or the State Tournament, I really doubt he's up for giving the Girls their own division, regardless of how fair that would be.
  8. Ozzy--Crazy Train Guns N Roses--Welcome to the Jungle Metallica--enter Sandman--For Whom the Bell Tolls--Battery (side Note--as a good full warm up song, I am weird and used Metallica's "One". something about the way that it works its way up to that Vicious Pace) Saliva--Survival of the Sickest (CLEAN VERSION) Limp Bizkit--Break Stuff (CLEAN VERSION) Eminem--Till I Collapse--Lose Yourself Nelly--Number 1 Silvertide--Aint Coming Home Buckcherry--Lit Up (CLEAN VERSION) and maybe the best one of all..... Rage Against the Machine--Know Your Enemy
  9. I'm in one of the fantasy football leagues on TheMat.com forums, and everyone has to contribute a college wrestling T-shirt as the prize (5 shirts for 1st, 3 for 2nd, etc....) Problem is, I'd much rather offer a UTC wrestling shirt, but I can't find one to purchase on the gomocs.com website. anyone got any ideas or help? it has to be a new shirt, so used ones won't work. any help is appreciated. Jason Bruce
  10. Maryland- 2 Public Classifications (1A/2A-small schools and 3A/4A Large Schools), 1 private division. Point system for entering and seeding the Regionals--Top 8 scorers Qualify for one of 4 Regions, and top 4 in district tourneys are entered by Pigtail. 16 Man Bracket for state, top 4 per Region. Double Elimination. Top 6 Medal. Virginia-3 Public Classifications and One Private. Districts,4 16-man Regionals, and 16-man State, 4 per Region. Top 8 Medal.
  11. Definitely consider yourselves lucky, guys. This is my first year as a Head Coach in Virginia, and we're only allowed 12 Dates (you all get 20). but we don't have it as bad as Maryland, who can only go to three tournaments a year. MD's Definition of a Tournament? any date that involves MORE THAN 3 Teams!!!!! That Means No quads or small dual tourneys, as they count towards your three for the year.
  12. WOW......I actually had to look this up, I'll admit it. I'll PM you with my email.....you have Gotta have some kinda VA info that (as a newly hired Head Coach out here) I want. the name you want is John Young, an assistant at Cumberland. wrestled under Martin at GB, placing 6th in 1996.
  13. Actually, While Great Bridge (and Granby) are indeed in the Hampton Roads area, Christiansburg is completely on the west side of the state 20 minutes from Blacksburg and VA tech. the schools have another connection, though....The University of Iowa. Former GB head coach (in his 2nd year at Old Dominion Univ.) Steve Martin wrestled for the Hawkeyes, (the only reason you didn't hear about him then was that he shared weights with a guy named Terry Brands) and C-Burg's Coaches Kevin Dresser (as well as assistant Daryl Weber) were All-Americans during the Gable years. Christiansburg has AMAZING fan support--they take up a full Quarter of the Salem Civic center during States. if I had to compare it, I'd say put Bradley AND Clarksville together. there are actually some questions around VA about C-burg's "amazing luck with Transfer students".....so to speak. but, I guess 4 Championships in the 4 Years that Dresser has been there will do that sort of thing.
  14. guys, I rail on this a lot, but it's because I Love Tennessee wrestling, Miss it a ton, and am now seeing firsthand what happens when you split up too much by size. JUST LOOK AT VIRGINIA. there are maybe 40-50 programs in Single A (where I'm coaching now). my current Region (which we will try and are favored to win tomorrow) has 9 teams. not one of those teams fills every weight class. Double AA is probably the toughest all around, with Grundy and Christiansburg. But, my kids don't ever care about seeing or wrestling them because THEY DON'T MATTER. think I wouldn't Thoroughly enjoy a 84-0 drubbing at the hands of Great Bridge (only 90 minutes away--my region covers up to two hours away)?? I'd Pay Them for a match. but, no reason to, since it wouldn't count. statewide, I've asked around about single A's success nationally, and am told that the most successful kid to ever go to Fargo from a Single A school "got one match from placing". there are MAYBE 3 kids in Division 1 NCAA, and all are walk-ons. I am doing everything I can to get my kids exposure to TOP wrestling in Maryland and Delaware, and I think that is one reason we Are favored to win our region. trust me, guys.....splitting Further is NOT the answer...not at all.
  15. Wow....absolutely amazing. see, that's the kind of stuff there should be stories on Sportscenter about. people have No idea how hard that is.
  16. think about the math on what Joe Warren did for a second (487 in a year). give yourself 50 matches--a heavy, if not impossible schedule. 10 takedowns a match --might not sound like a lot, but how often do you see 20 points on the scoreboard? also, factor in Close matches--he couldn't have taken EVERYBODY down 10 times. put all that together, and that is one VERY Impressive accomplishment- which is why I consider it one of the top Records in Wrestling.
  17. THANK YOU! I Knew I'd left a great one out, and that's who it was. don't think that we're slighting the older eras--I think the current kids would have bigger numbers based on sheer number of matches.
  18. I'm betting nobody has complete enough stats....but my money would be on either Brewster, McTorry (1996), or Darren McKnight in 01. however, you of all people should know, Ronnie, that only one Number matters when it comes to Takedowns...... 487.
  19. but don't most (75% or more) of the teams travel at Least 2 hours or more anyway? the teams that do this, usually miss all day on Thursday anyway, with Memphis (at least when I wrestled) missing Wednesday as well. why would an extra round or 2 change that? the teams that don't travel that far are already out of school and there- the ones that come farther have been there from the day before.
  20. I can't believe I'm actually about to say this, (since I'm WAY opposed to it) but in D-2 it might make sense.... Maryland uses a point system for Regional Qualifications and Seeding. the top 8 point scorers are in the tourney, along with anyone who is top 4 in one of the 2 districts (usually the same people.) there is No seeding meeting- it is all up to the points. Soddy used to (still does, maybe?) do this for their tourney, and when done right it can work. I disagree with it because it encourages Dodging, but I think it could fit the situation for D-2. here is the gist of it: MPSSAA REGIONAL POINTS FORMULA 1. Four Points (4) for every Dual Meet win, including Forfeits 2. Two Points (2) for every win in a Dual meet Tournament 3. One Point (1) for every win in a Tournament (points not earned for byes) 4. Points for placement in a Tournament * 16 Team Tournament (14 or more teams): 1st = 16, 2nd = 12, 3rd = 9, 4th = 6, 5th = 3, 6th = 2 * 12 Team Tournament (10-13 teams): 1st = 12, 2nd = 9, 3rd = 6, 4th = 4 * 8 Team Tournament (7-9 teams): 1st = 9, 2nd = 7, 3rd = 5, 4th = 3 * 6 Team Tournament (5-6 teams): 1st = 7, 2nd = 5, 3rd = 3 5. Carryover points for Regionals & States (previous season) * Regionals: 1st = 9, 2nd = 7, 3rd = 5, 4th = 3 * States: 1st = 16, 2nd = 12, 3rd = 9, 4th = 6, 5th = 4, 6th = 2
  21. I believe that T.J. Hill was also undefeated and a 4Xer in MO
  22. This is done in VA, which has a 3-way A/AA/AAA split. there is a loophole in the "no all-star competitions" that was found, and thus the Triple A champs (usually the Great Bridge lineup....Hahaha) meet a mixture of the Single A and Double A champs in a dual the week after states. However, there is still a "private school division", and they do not take part in the all-star match. I would say that USAW and the TWF would be the easiest way to do this--have an invite-only folkstyle tourney open to the top 3-4 in each division.
  23. I'd say the Brentwood as well, but for The Clam Chowder!!!! I went to one this year (in Maryland) that had a great idea,.....Outback steakhouse Take-out.
  24. Rampage wrestled for Peter Bolgeo at Raleigh-Egypt...still had the chain and all back then. someone mentioned the PowerBomb....I was there the day he did that in the Germantown Freestyle tourney. Amazing to see, and frightening at the same time. the fact that the kid lived through it and stood up after was the most impressive part!!!
  25. another thread gave me this idea... How many good towns and good athletic schools have NO opportunities for wrestling? off the top of my head.... Jackson (USJ, JCM) Dyersburg (sore subject) Columbia Gallatin Oak Ridge Union City that should get the ball rolling.....
