  1. I don't think you'll see many yellows. The past two years of Brdn-Farr soccer is nothing like it use to be. It's a lot less brutal and IMO better soccer than it used to be 3-5 yrs ago. Most of the yellows have come from stupid fouls not mean fouls. As far as Brdn's defense, their backline rarely gets the credit they deserve, especially the two srs, Cooke and Wyrick. This is true for all good soccer teams, farragut included. Most 1-0 soccer games are won by the defenders not by the one guy that gets a score, but those backline guys rarely get the credit. I suppose partly because it's difficult for the stats guys to put a number on it. Just my 2 cents as the father of a defender.
  2. No. My soccer son tore his ACL at end of wrestling season (during practice) and is just now getting back on the pitch after surgery in Feb. He may be ready for D1 state championship and should be ready for regions end of June. His team has already qualified. This has been a tough season for him to watch because he probably would have been starting. We're planning to make it to the championship on Sat (but we're already looking fwd to next year). I've had to rely on Coach T for score updates. Boy is that painful! But I'm grateful to the guys that report scores during the game. Go Dawgs!
  3. Brentwood might very well beat Bearden tonight, but I don't think it will be in a shootout. Bearden won state last year in a shootout and nobody has a better goalkeeper than Walker. The Dawgs will be extremely confident if it goes to a shootout. Should be a great game.
  4. Last year they played every one of those games on the road. When you play the schedule Bearden plays, you're bound to have some tough games at home where you can take advantage of the home field.
  5. Nice analysis Dins8. Exactly what they did to Hendersonville in the state championship last year. Hv took shot after shot from 20+ yds but got almost nothing inside. It looks like it, but in the Bearden games I've seen they only play three defenders (last year they played four), but they've got 4-5 midfielders that don't mind working their butts off. The two outside mids almost always beat the opposing fwds back down the field essentially creating a flat five at times. By the time the opposing offense has 4-5 players down the field Bearden has 6-7 standing at the 18. Yes, but what too many overlook is the transition defense. How does Turner get his midfielders to work so hard? Easy, he's got enough depth that if you don't run you'll be on the bench in a hurry. And that's not an idle threat.
  6. Cody must be a pretty decent player because I thought Mo West was easily the better team against Knox West. They controlled the ball, made nice crisp passes, and won most of the 50-50s. They had several chances to score another goal or two but couldn't finish.
  7. I'll throw in another name. My vote for MOW would go to Nathan Bevelhimer (Bearden) who finished 6th at 160. Why?? Because he's my son and he wrestled his guts out. One OT win and another win with a takedown in the last 3 secs. Congrats to all the wrestlers for their accomplishments and for putting on a great show.
  8. That's certainly the case at Bearden; we get virtually no money from the school. We've got one mat, but we had up to 25 out at one time this year. We've been getting progressively better and this year had our best showing ever at regions w/ 4 qualifiers. If we're going to be as good as we should be given our size, the coaches are going to have to get more kids out and keep them out. Re football. The football players rarely last. Three of our starters came from the state champion Bearden soccer team. It helps that our soccer coach wrestled in h.s. He even commented at soccer practice last year that he wished the rest of the team was as tough as the 3 wrestlers. As far as poor publicity. The problem is region-wide and the schools and coaches can take a large part of the blame. The Knox News-Sent will print scores as long as someone turns them in, but there were very few teams that called in scores his year. Not even results for the KIL; I suspect no one turned them in. Besides the story in today's paper, there were no results, nor any mention of who the qualifiers were except for first place. Luckily, the weekly Farragut Press does a great job of covering results for Farr, Brden, Webb, and Catholic.
  9. I don't guarantee this is 100% accurate, but for those that can't wait for a more official post, here are championship matches: 103 Miller (Grnbk) over Farinella (Farr) (Maryvl) ...also Hopps (Knx Cath) & ? 112 Sluder (Grnbk) over Drollman (Wm Blnt) ...also Little (Beardn) & Tackett (Gibbs) 119 Long (Grnbk) over Harless (Karns) ...also ? & ? 125 Holley (Wm Blnt) over Frisco (Maryvl) ...also ? & ? 130 Ridenour (Maryvl) over Coffin (Beardn) ...also Tisdale (Karns) & ? 135 Burns (Wm Blnt) over Birdwell (Beardn) ...also Farinella (Farr) & ? 140 Shields (Maryvl) over Legg (Seymr) ...also Greene (Gibbs) & Smith (CAK) 145 Shields (Pign Frg) over Blackford (Alcoa) ...also ? & ? 152 Burchett (Grnbk) over Reagan (Seymr) ...also Metcalf (Pign Frg) & ? 160 Bevelhimer (Beardn) over Al Khaleifi (West) ...also Watson (Seymr) & McCartt (Stn Mem) 171 Shurina (Knox Cath) over Miller (Grnbk) ...also ? & ? 189 Hall (Maryvl) over Campbell (Pign Frg) ...also ? & ? 215 Morgan (Union Cty) over Raveiz (Farr) ...also ? & ? 285 Evans (Wm Blnt) over Leonard (Halls) ...also ? & ? ... and Bearden was 5th place team with 4 state qualifiers!!
  10. Goldminer, you are the man! I've been watching a lot of Reg 2 wrestling this year and I could never come up with a list this complete. I think I would add Gunter (halls) at 152 and Bookie Al-Khelaifi (west) at 160.
  11. That's how I had it except that I apparently missed the NF2 at the end, though I'm sure you'll agree that those pts were immaterial. It looks like I was at least correct that Coffin was still ahead 7-6 after giving up the escape and just needed to last out the remaining 10-15(?) sec. Congrats again to Ryan. I look fwd to the coke regardless of who buys. BTW in case you didn't know, my son is the Bearden 160. His match with your 160 was also quite exciting (at least for us). Good luck with the remainder of the season. You guys are doing a great job. See you in Feb.
  12. Not according to my score book, which I usually trust more than the scoring table. (Either way King won.) There was quite a scoring flurry at the end. Since it's on video, we can check it out when the DVD comes out. I'll gladly bet you a coke that the final score wasn't 11-9. if you've got the period-by-period scoring, I don't mind being corrected. I keep these stats for the team and do my best to get them right.
  13. Yep, Junior's doing great with the boys, but it's not like he started with nothing. 3 of the guys were state qualifiers last year and most everyone else was back. We could have done a little better at Halls (but who can't say that). We're looking forward to a strong showing at KIL. The correct score of the 130 final was King (Sey) 9 - Coffin (Bearden) 8. It was an even and exciting match. Coffin went ahead by 2 with takedown twd end of third and gave up an escape with 10-15 sec left. Except he thought he was down by one instead of up and took a risky shot giving up the winning takedown with a couple seconds left. What a heartbreaker. Those are the kind of losses you hope the wrestler AND the coach learn from. I bet it won't happen again.
  14. Other Bearden scores this week: Bearden 45 Webb 28 Bearden 51 Austin East 18 Bearden 45 Kingston 24
  15. Junior doesn't teach at Bearden but his assistant Morgan Shinlever does. You could reach Coach Shinlever at Bearden. I'm a Bearden parent and if you want to give me a phone number I can pass it on to Junior.
  16. Pretty much so. 7 guys went 2-0; 2 went 1-1; and 5 went 0-2. Bearden picked up some forfeits (5 on the day from 103 to 119).
  17. Wednesday in-school at Karns Bearden 48 - Karns 36 Bearden 48 - Union County 36
  18. Jr shouldn't have any trouble getting the Bearden program running from the get go. Coach Andersen had a very young team wrestling very well at the end of the season last year. Add to that a handful of new (both very experienced and inexperienced) guys and the team could be two deep at almost every weight class (including 4 returning state qualifiers). The boys are chomping at the bit to get started. This is as good as I've seen the program at the beginning of the year in four years. (If we can just keep Rigger under control. Look forward to talking with you soon, Rigger.)
  19. BigG, Just heard you and other knoxville state champion coaches on the radio. Nice job! There's not enough (hardly any) high school chatter on the local radio talk shows. Too bad the broadcast is about 80% commercial/news breaks. I haven't had a chance to drop off the bracket sheet to the school. Any chance you'll be in west Knoxville after about 5:30 this evening. Would be happy to meet you someplace. If not I'll drop it at CAK next week.
  20. I'll drop it off at the school or get in touch with you through CAK.
  21. I too thought the center ref during CBHS and BGA game left a bit to be desired. My biggest complaint is the anger he shows at players when he gives them cards, especially the red. It's like it's a personal afront to him that someone commits a foul. What's up with that. I've seen him do it in other games, too.
  22. Congrats BigG. I've enjoyed reading CoachT comments from a coach's perspective all year. Thanks. Your boys played a great game yesterday. After the Bearden win I grabbed the laminated bracket for the AAA tournament for our coaches and noticed the A/AA laying there. Decided it shouldn't just be tossed in the trash so I brought it back to Kville. It's yours if you want it. I just live 5 min from CAK. Let me know how I can get in contact with you or someone else at CAK that might want it.
  23. Bearden scores in first 10-min OT and hangs on to win 2-1. That's all I know. Go Dawgs!!
  24. How close are these two teams? Here's the results from 6 common opponents: S. Doyle FHS: W 2-1, BHS: W 2-0 Sevier Cty FHS: W 6-0, BHS: W 7-1 Chr Bros FHS: L 0-3, BHS: L 0-4 MUS FHS: T 1-1, BHS: L 1-2 Knox West FHS: T 2-2, BHS: W 2-1 Maryville FHS: T 0-0, BHS: L 0-2 Records --- FHS: 2-1-3, BHS: 3-3 GF/GA --- FHS: 11/7, BHS: 12/9 Pretty close. I think both teams are playing better lately and sounds like both may have some sick and injured starters returning for Friday's game.
  25. Right score wrong team. Bearden wins 2-1. 1-1 at half. Bearden scores midway through 2nd and hangs on. My guess is possessions were fairly even.
