  1. Bearden gave up a corner kick goal in first 50 sec so the starters got yanked immediately and replaced with second stringers, mostly freshman and sophomores for about 20 min. They actually played pretty well. Gave up two goals, one on a questionable PK. Starters eventually returned and gave up one more. We'll see if they got the message later today.
  2. Charlie, my son (from Bearden) lost to you at GIT last yr for 5th and I've been keeping an eye on you since. He's at 52 this year so won't be running into you. I'm pleased to see that you come off here as being a real gentleman. I'm sorry for what your buddy is going through. Doesn't seem fair. Maybe you and teammates can come up with a gesture of support at Regions. Just don't get yourself in trouble. Speaking of which... you're sure on the computer a lot in the middle of the school day! Good luck this wknd. Hope to see you on top!
  3. MasterBlaster, you listenin? How about a Farragut vs Bearden girls match for a fundraiser? Thursday nite before the football game next fall. Or maybe the opening act for FHS-BHS wrestling match. What are the chances of getting that by our respective principles? MB, look me up at Alcoa this wknd. Ask the Ginns, Griecos, or Manns to point out Mark B. BTW, if anybody's counting votes, I say let the girls wrestle. If I had a daughter, I'd be less worried about what your son was doing to her on the mat than on a date.
  4. These results from tssaa.org suggest it wasn't even close. Maryville wins 9 matches and easily wins on points. I assume a mistake in the tssaa report. Anyone know what's wrong with these scores or my math? 119 - Jeremiah Holt (Sp) d. Blake Ridenour (Mary) 8-2; 125 - Evan Frisco (Mary) p. Brandon Roberts (Sp) 4:39; 130 - Chaney Webber (Sp) p. Tyler Clendenen (Mary) 0:22; 135 - Nic Shields (Mary) d. Dustin Jones (Sp) 13-6; 140 - Bobby Miles (Sp) m.d. Stephen Hand (Mary) 11-3; 145 - Jeremy Hendricks (Mary) t.f. Anthony Cobb (Sp); 152 - Josh Hendricks (Mary) wins by injury default over Kyle Jones (Sp); 160 - Cody Norrod (Sp) m.d. Caleb Law (Mary) 10-1; 171 - Landon Hall (Mary) m.d. Jared Devalk (Sp) 10-2; 189 - Adam Cable (Mary) p. Bradley Callis (Sp) 1:24; 215 - Corey Jeacock (Mary) wins by injury default over Mikel Woodall (Sp); 275 - Josh Cantwell (Mary) d. Mario Scott (Sp) 3-2 ; 103 - Matt Shock (Mary) t.f. Zach Shelton (Sp) 16-0; 112 - Jantzen Pendley (Sp) d. Josh Frost (Mary) 10-5 .
  5. No argument here about Farragut's strength in many sports. But enjoy it while you can. Bearden sports fans probably aren't alone in counting the days till the new high school gets built and the Farragut enrollment gets knocked down to the size of the rest of us! Hopefully in 3-4 years there will be another new and improving wrestling program in Knox County.
  6. Too bad Farragut didn't make the 10 min trip down the road to the Knox Catholic tournament in Dec when PJP came to town. They could have met then.
  7. A brief correction to what I said earlier before someone else does. Only one of the two wrestlers in question lost their respective coin flips. Otherwise, my comments stand. I hadn't even thought of the possibility of losing in a coin flip to a wrestler that you had beaten earlier. This could have happened easily at the KIL meet had just one match gone the other way.
  8. A: Losing third place because the other guy reached the 5-match limit! Two wrestlers at the KIL meet today were "awarded" fourth place by a lost coin flip because their opponents had reached the 5 match limit. The two "losing" wrestlers both (I believe) went further in the winners bracket before dropping down to consolation bracket. Apparently, at the seeding meeting they decided to go with coin flip instead of giving 3rd place to the guy that still had matches to wrestle, which is the normal way this is handled as I understand it. Not sure who "they" is exactly since many of the coaches were at the region dual meet held the same night. I appreciate that the rule as most invoke it seems unfair to the wrestler who has fought his way back through the consolation bracket, but imagine how unfair it is to the wrestler that advanced further in the winners bracket. Solutions? How about looking at performance against common opponents in the tournament? Our wrestler and the kid he was suppose to wrestle both wrestled two guys in common. Seems like a tie-breaker could have easily been used based on those results. Or, why don't they just give both third? That's certainly better than what the KIL officials did. Probably because they don't know how to handle it in their computer system. Flip a coin for the better medal if need be, but don't tell the kid he got fourth because the people in charge are too set in their ways to come up with a solution thats good for the kids. To the credit of both wrestlers involved (one from Bearden, one from Powell), they both accepted their 4th place awards graciously, though I'm sure they lost some faith in the system. (Note: this post has been edited by the author to disguise his real disgust, which is much greater now than when this actually happened.)
  9. Young Bearden team is coming together nicely at end of season. Team has 6 JR, 1 SO, and 8 FR (8 first year wrestlers - NEVER wrestled in their lives) and has won 5 of last 7 duals with wins over Powell, Halls, West, Heritage, and Sevier County. Tonight: BHS 30 - S Doyle 42 (BHS wins 5 of 9 contested matches) BHS 45 - Sevier Co 30 (BHS wins 8 of 10 contested matches) (look for individual results in News Sentinel tomorrow)
  10. Just found this short film while surfing the net and found it quite entertaining. It is very well done and totally free. http://www.underdogthefilm.com/ Happy New Year to everyone at CoachT! (Two weeks without any wrestling to watch and I've about got the shakes. Let's get this second half started!)
  11. FHS 44 - BHS 36 Excluding forfeits the score was BHS 24 - FHS 20 (we take our little victories any way we can get them) Reveiz bros didn't wrestle, but wouldn't have made any diference in final score. Details in this morning's News Sentinel (sorry I don't remember them all). BTW, as team statistician I found out last night how easy it was to call in results to the paper. I encourage everyone to give the sports desk a call and report their match scores.
  12. Based on the equations from my son's printout which I obtained from the NWCA site, I believe your son's would work out as follows: BW = 162 and %BF = 13.00 Fat Weight (FW) =Body Weight(BW)*(%BF/100)...................... FW = 21.06 Fat Free Weight (FFW) =Body Weight(BW)-Fat Weight(FW).......FFW = 140.94 Min Wrestling Weight (MWW) =Fat Free Weight(FFW)/0.93......MWW = 151.55 Since they do take weight and BF out to 1 decimal place it could be slightly different. (You also should double-check my calcs.) Looks like he just made it! ALthough my understanding is if you're over 7%BF you can go down another 2% of the MWW which would be about 3 lbs in this case. Some claim that this 2% is already accounted for but I don't see it. Which brings up another question: Since the extra 2% is a Tennessee thing and not national (from what I can tell), how will the online system account for it? Won't the system flag anything less than its predicted min wt as a violation? I hope they use some common sense in their enforcement of this program.
  13. I grew up in Indiana back when the state basketball tournament was all one class and the largest arena in the state was always packed to the rafters for the state finals. You've all seen Hoosiers. Every school in the state (400+) was offered 12 tickets to the to the finals for there basketball team whether they were in the finals or got beat in the first round. Seems like TSSAA could do that for each werstling team in Tennessee. Coaches provide a roster and if the kid shows up at the ticket window with a picture ID he gets a free pass. I took my son and another wrestler to UTC for the evening session Friday and hoped we might be able to see the last of the afternoon session. The ticket Nazis wouldn't even let us in for the last 15 min before they emptied the gym unless we paid $6 apiece.
  14. I developed a series of Excel spreadsheets (all in one package) that keeps track of individual wrestlers' stats and summarizes them for the entire team. I will gladly send this free to anyone who requests it (the file is about 0.8MB). You enter each wrestler's opponent and the number of T2, R2, E1, NF2, etc., for both wrestlers. The spreadsheet automatically calculates the match score, but more importantly this information is summarized throughout the year for each wrestler and for the entire team. It summarizes wins and losses by fall, dec, etc, numbers of takedowns, pins, etc., and some other stats. The program doesn't calculate final match scores, but it wouldn't take much more work to add that in (maybe next year). I'm not a coach, but this kind of information is really great for identifying strengths and weaknesses, setting goals, and a handy reference at seeding meetings. I'm sure many of you calculate these kind of stats. I couldn't find any free software, so just wrote my own. I did this to help out our coach and because I'm a real numbers kinda person. If you have any experience with spreadsheets, it should be pretty easy to use. I've included a brief set of instructions. Originally I thought I would get the team scorebook after each meet and record the results, but later found that I could do most of it as each match progressed. Gave me something to do in the stands. I'm getting nothing for this. No popup adds or anything like that. I hope someone will try it out and tell me what they think. If you would like a copy, send an email to markbevelhimer@comcast.net
  15. Thanks for the correction. Like I said, as the team's volunteer statistician I have trouble making out our scorekeeper's handwriting, so sometimes I have to guess. I hate to complain too loudly about the volunteer help though. As a parent I'm quite pleased with our new coach. Our team is mostly sophomores, so we're looking forward to the future. We've just got to figure out how to get more kids interested. P.S. Thanks for the kind words about Wessleman on CoachT last week. He and his dad (and the rest of us) are really disappointed that his season is over.
  16. Scores from Tues night at Bearden: Bearden 51 - Fulton 18 Kingston 57 - Bearden 16 Kingston over Fulton (score??) (not full squads for Bearden and Fulton, but still a lot of heart on the mat) 112 - Grimes(F) pinned Budd( 119 - Birdwell( pinned Sievert(F) 125 - Mansoor( dec McDonald(F) 160 - Bevelhimer( pinned Kimmler(F) 215 - Gonzalez( pinned Murrell(F) 112 - Miller(K) pinned Budd( 119 - Roddy(K) dec Birdwell( 125 - Duguav(K) pinned Mansoor( 135 - Finnell(K) pinned Cook( 160 - Bevelhimer( pinned Cowan(K) 189 - Plumley( maj Moore(K) 215 - Kwalman(K) pinned Gonzalez( notables: Aaron O'Hern( won both by forfeit. Joslin(K) is still nursing injury and didn't wrestle, but plans to be back soon I hear. (I apologize for any name misspellings. Our student scorekeeper has some spelling issues.)
  17. Bearden's 171, Scott Wessleman, broke his leg at Science Hill tournament saturday and won't be able to return before end of season. Scott won his first two matches by fall in a little over 1 minute each. He was leading half way through the third period in the championship when he hurt his leg. He limped back to the center in obvious pain for the restart and held on for the win 8-3 (I think). He had to be carried to the podium. How he wasn't awarded OW is beyond me. It was a gutsy performance. Xrays the next day revealed the break. Pretty tough luck for a senior. He was a state qualifier last year and hoped to get back with a chance to place this year. He was having a great season: 23-6, 22 pins, 3rd at Catholic tourn, 3rd at GIT. Since his story won't make Sportscenter, I thought I'd use this forum to brag on a great wrestler and a great young man.
  18. Bearden's got another decent 152. Only problem is he has to wrestle 160. A sophomore who's giving up 6-7 lbs every match and has won more than half of his matches. Good news is he gets to wrestle O'Hern every day in practice. Look for him next year. BTW, O'Hern is loooking good this year. Just lost once, 1-0, in a match that could have gone either way.
  19. Our 112 weighed in at 114 and under 7% BF, so we're missing a 112 and 103, but still looking. Lots of inexperience in some other classes. Several matchups should be pretty competitive. The BHS/FHS matchup is one that needs to be revived.
  20. The new Bearden coach is Jason Anderson. He did grow up wrestling in Iowa and has coached in Colorado. He's employed by the Knox County school system as a math curriculum developer (or something like that). We (Bearden parents) are very excited to have him. We felt like the program had really taken a turn for the better last year and were worried about who might replace Coach brown. I for one am quite pleased, and I'm hopeful that the future of Bearden wrestling is good. It probably won't happen over night. He was a bit taken aback when he heard how little monetary support we got from the school. Fortunately several parents have stepped up to help with fund-raising, etc. Re: Coach Brown. He was a bit of a character, but the boys loved him, and he them. I didn't agree with everything he did, but he was a very good motivator and a great guy. He and his wife gave an unbelievable amount of effort to the program. They left Knoxville to join a youth ministry program in Charlotte. Re: BHS v FHS. I'm all for it, too. I had heard FHS had some open datees as does BHS and I told coach. I know he called FHS coaches and left a message, but don't know if he's heard back. I'm sure they love all us parents getting involved in their scheduling Aaron O'Hearn should be strong this year at 152. He's worked hard this summer and is in excellent condition. Two other returning seniors: Scott Wessleman at 171/189 and Doug Plumley at 215 should be strong. We've also got a couple experienced sophomores that did well last year: Andrew Birdwell at 119 and Nathan Bevelhimer (my son) at 160. We've got several other returners and a few (though not enough) new guys.
  21. The district/region classifications for DI at the TSSAA site (http://www.tssaa.org/Classifications/GenClass.cfm) seem to be missing some schools, at least in Region 2. Where are Gibbs and Seymour for example? Someone told me there is a smaller school division now, but it doesn't show up on the TSSAA website that I can find. Just the DII private schools. Can anyone help me out here?
