  1. Looks like the TSSAA rejected Fairview's admittance to join District 11-AA for the 2011 & 2012 seasons. As things stand right now District 11 will have 7 teams and District 12 will have 9 teams for the next 2 years after Summitt HS joins the varsity ranks. Something tells me that the TSSAA is going to move East Hickman to District 11 when all is said and done. They moved Sycamore away from both Harpeth & Cheatham County based on location. I see them doing the same to the schools in Hickman County as well. Lyles is geographically closer than Centerville.
  2. 2004 David Lipscomb lost to Greenbrier in the opener and then went on to advance all the way to the state semifinals where they finally fell to Alcoa 2005 David Lipscomb lost to Greenbrier in the opener and then went on to advance all the way to the state title game where they finally lost to Livingston Academy 2006 David Lipscomb lost to Goodpasture in the opener and then went on to advance all the way to the state title game where they finally lost to Knoxville Fulton and if you want to go a little bit further in depth............. 2009 Giles County lost to Cookeville in the opener and then went on to advance all the way to the state title game where they eventually captured a state championship by defeating Greenville.
  3. Smith County: 21 Gordonsville: 7 The Owls are not going to sit back and allow Woodmore to rush for yards on them. The Owls can put 8 and sometimes even 9 in the box to gang up on the Tigers running game. Their DBs are very good and can play man-to-man on the Tigers receivers. Unless Gordonsville hits some long passes down the field it's going to be a long night for them in Carthage.
  4. That Week 3 clash with Westview should be a really good battle. I look for those 2 teams to be the favorites out of west-TN in Class 3A this year.
  5. I like taking the Top 3 out of every region and then having "wild card" spots after for the final 8 teams (makes up 1/4 of the playoff bracket). If you take the top 4 and make them "automatic" qualifiers then you'll see some awful records of teams in the playoffs no question about it. Especially in 6 classes!
  6. East did beat Stewart County 13-0 in the jamboree. I would not be quick to judge them based on 1 BAD SHOWING in the opener. Hope they can rebound and pick up a "W" here!
  7. Both teams won 27-0 last week over Greenbrier (Springfield) and Sycamore (Northeast) respectively. I find it funny that week two pits Greenbrier vs Sycamore & Northeast vs Springfield. It will be interesting to me if the outcomes to each of these games are very similar and show a pattern of which team is truly better. If I had to make a bet I would pick Northeast to win in a 27-21 type of game because they are the more experienced team HOWEVER the homefield edge does go to Springfield and the score could very easily be reversed.
  8. OFFENSIVELY QB: Jo Byrns RB: Jo Byrns WR: Smith County OL: Jo Byrns Jo Byrns is more physical up front offensively and has a better ground attack with Holt and Traughber. I also think that Adkins is a better player at the quarterback position at this stage then Smith County's starter (Scurlock). I believe the Owls have better playmakers on the outside at the receiver position in Johnston, Nuss, & Hackett. DEFENSIVELY DL: Jo Byrns LB: Smith County DB: Smith County Jo Byrns is again very physical up front. The Owls are a team that relies on lots of slanting & pinching with their linemen up front. I believe that the Owls are better at the linebacker position. Shawn Pinson is about as good as they come at this level. In the secondary it's hard to go against Smith County as well. Johnston has been all-state each of the last 2 years and Hackett fills the alley very tough from his safety positon. SPECIAL TEAMS Kicker/Punter: even KR/PR: Smith County In matchups with both teams each team's respective placekicker was fairly accurate on extra points but in both the jamboree and in the opener of the regular season each team's placekicker also missed a short field goal opportunity against the Cubs. Smith County gets the edge in the return game. Nuss and Wakefield are excellent in the open field. MY TAKE ON THE POTENTIAL MATCHUP It would be too close for me to call because I think both teams matchup very well with one another. I think if these teams did meet up 10 times that it would be very close to a 5-5 split. I look for both teams to make very deep runs in the playoffs this November. The advantage that Jo Byrns has over Smith County is that fortunately for them...............ALCOA IS NOT IN THEIR CLASSIFICATION.
  9. Last week the Cheatham Cubs & East Robertson Indians opened their 2010 seasons. The Cubs fell at home to Smith County by 20 points while the Indians went on the road and fell to Fairview by 35 points. I am sure that both teams are very eager to get back on the field after starting off the season in the loss column. These 2 teams have had some good battles through the years. Last season East Robertson defeated Cheatham in Ashland City. That victory snapped a 3-GAME losing streak for the Indians against the Cubs (2002-2003-2004). What are your thoughts on this one?
  10. David Lipscomb nor Goodpasture could stay within 30 of Alcoa this year. Both teams are very good football programs with great coaches but Alcoa would name their score against either of them. Pearl-Cohn has athletes but they are not a championship caliber team in terms of discipline at this point. Alcoa would beat them by 30 points if the teams met today. I would love to see Alcoa come to middle-TN and play a very good AAA school like Riverdale, Oakland, Smyrna, or Brentwood. I believe it would be worth the trip for the Tornadoes. I don't believe any of them could beat Alcoa this year but I still think it would be a game worth actually attending. When Alcoa was in 2A and White House was in 3A in 2007 & 2008 the Tornadoes beat the Blue Devils very badly each time those teams met. During those 2 seasons White House was a 3A Quarterfinalist & a 3A Semifinalist. In each contest they weren't in the same universe as Alcoa. Outside of a strong Class AAA program there is really no team that could provide the Tornadoes with any type of realistic challenge this season. That is just a fact of life!
  11. Heard they defeated Clarksville-Northwest 6-0 the other night in the jamboree. I don't know how their scrimmages went with Rossview, East Literature, and Clarksville-Notheast.
  12. Thank you for the kind words imallin. It was a great night for sure. Smith County is once again going to have a very good season. They have 3 outstanding receivers, a dynamic duo at running back, and a player at QB who is both athletic and can throw it. The Owls main strength is their play up front. The kid playing TE/DT is an amazing high school football player who will dominate all season long. The linebackers never seem to miss tackles when plays come their way. I look for the Owls to likely win District 8-AA and make another deep run in the TSSAA State Playoffs. Coach Maynord and his staff do a great job and the people of Carthage support their football team like crazy. I love that about the SCHS community! Best wishes the rest of the way!
  13. Smith County Owls Defeat Cheatham County Cubs 27-7 In Season Opener For Both Teams Here is the recap which was posted to the Cheatham County Cubs Football Fan Page just a few moments ago. It was a great night for high school football to open this 2010 season. Hope both teams grew from it and find a way to move forward and go on to have solid seasons. Only time will tell us that answer!
  14. Alcoa: 28 Maryville: 7 It is THE GAME as far as high school football in this state is concerned.
  15. Mike Jarreau Field was full tonight as the 2010 Tennessee HSF Season began for Smith County & Cheatham County. The Owls came to Ashland City and left town with a 27-7 victory. The teams traded defensive stops throughout the first 16-17 minutes of the contest and then after the Owls stopped the Cubs and forced a punt Nathan Nuss returned a punt 50+ yards for a TD and the PAT by Adam Johnson gave the Owls a 7-0 lead. Smith County would add to that lead in the final 2 minutes of the half when Lucas Wakefield eluded the Cubs defense and ran into the end zone from 4 yards away. The big play of that drive was a 30+ yard run by Jameson Stevenson. The Johnson PAT gave the Owls a 14-0 lead at halftime. The 2nd half saw some serious action in the 3rd quarter. The opening play sa Gage Scurlock connect with Joshua Johnston on a long pass & catch. The drive ended however when the Cubs defense forced a Smith County turnover. Each team went on to trade punts and then it was the Cubs turn to shine as runs by Shaun Montgomery and Mitchell Potts set up a long touchdown pass of 43 yards from Devin Conner to Thatcher Brinkley. The Mitchell Potts PAT made the score 14-7 Owls with about 2:30 to go in the 3rd quarter. The Cubs did a great job covering the next kickoff when Desmond Swett tackled Wakefield at the 30 yard line for about a 5 yard return. Wakefield was not to be denied though as he took the handoff on the first play of the next drive and raced 70 yards to the endzone for a score. The PAT gave the Owls a 21-7 lead after 3 quarters. The Owls added to the lead in the 4th quarter on a Gage Scurlock TD run and wound up winning 27-7. I do believe that both teams will know that they were in a FOOTBALL GAME tomorrow morning because there was some big time hitting taking place tonight in Ashland City. Congrats to the Owls on a great win! I believe that the Owls fans who made the trip to Cheatham County were very satisfied with how they were treated tonight and I also think that they left Mike Jarreau Field tonight with a new found respect for Cheatham County Football.
  16. I dropped by practice this evening and saw the guys get some good work done in some nasty conditions. It has rained like crazy the last 2 evenings and more is expected to come. I stayed around after practice and helped the coaches stripe off the field. It is holding water really well right now and is actually in decent shape. It's really amazing considering that the final 3 contests of 2009 (Camden, Waverly, & Creek Wood) were all played on that same field and all 3 games were played in some absolutely horrible conditions which destroyed the old surface and led to the re-sodding of the new surface earlier this year. I have seen some very big crowds in past years against the likes of Brentwood Academy, Hendersonville, Smyrna, White House, Greenbrier, Harpeth, & Sycamore and not yet have I seen the seating become a major issue. The stadium behind the home sideline is very big and holds a large capacity. It is unusual for many who have never experienced it because there is nothing but woods behind the visitor sideline and it makes life very lonely for opposing teams. In our own unique way it is what makes Mike Jarreau Field a special place to witness a high school football game. The last time Smith County played at Mike Jarreau Field was either in 1975 or 1976. CCCHS opened in the fall of 1970 and the current stadium has been what the team has played on since the 1971 season. This season will mark the 40th in which the Cubs have played their home games at Mike Jarreau Field. I am glad Thursday has finally arrived. Tonight is the OFFICIAL START of the 2010 High School Football Season.
  17. If PJPII covers #1 that plays receiver for the Wildcats then they will win. Clarksville has some size but they are at their best when he is making plays. I would have to see them establish drives by running the football before I picked them to do it against a school like PJPII.
  18. Well year in and year out Sycamore & Greenbrier usually play very tight football games with the outcome usually being decided very late. With that said if you logic of "NE better or it will be a long year" holds true then I would certainly also say that Springfield better beat Greenbrier this week or they will be in for a long year as well.
  19. Fairview: 35 East Robertson: 21 I think this one will be a shootout but I just can't go against the Jackets. Their defense relies on turnovers and their offense is loaded with big play potential. Hand will put up his usual big numbers for the Indians but surely the Jackets will eventually make someone else beat them.
  20. Pearl-Cohn did not allow a score in scrimmages against Hillsboro & Pope John Paul II. They then backed that up by completely shutting out Hunters Lane in the jamboree. The Tenessean picked the Firebirds to go all the way to the State Championship Game and meet up with Alcoa in December. Their schedule is brutal this season. MBA, Clarksville-Northeast, BGA, David Lipscomb, Maplewood, and Fort Campbell (KY) will all be very strong. CPA will be very well coached and no pushover either! I don't look for East Literature, Stratford, or Whites Creek to pose much of a threat to PC this season but those other 7 games are going to be wars!
  21. I see a very similar game as to what took place back in 1997 between these 2 teams. The Firebirds are LOADED this year and they have dominated in all of their preseason tests. I agree with the Tennessean's prediction that they are in fact Alcoa's biggest challenger in Class 3A. MBA is going to be a powerhouse as always. Thoughts?????
  22. Smith County Owls at Cheatham County Cubs Game Notes The game notes are now available for everyone to view. Just a little less than 75 hours away from Kickoff!!!
  23. Last season's matchup was a shootout where turnovers played a huge factor in the final outcome. Who takes this season's opener?
