  1. Greatest season in TN HS history?...that would be a good thread. Brentwood in '08 would be up there...but in my opinion I don't think any team comes close to CBHS from '90-'92 (Ross Paule, Chris Michner (sp?), Talley) they were incredible won state three years in a row... Looks like Coach Sandy and the Centennial boys watched a lot of Inter Milan videos...Congrats - wouldn't be surprised to see them win it all. Gonna stick with my pick though - Hendersonville (2-0)
  2. The cup stays in Middle TN!!! Congrats Hendersonville and Centennial!!!
  3. Centennial up 1-0. About 15 minutes left in first half. Thunderstorm delay began around 5:40. Centennial playing 4-5-1 and countering when possible. Should have had 2. Farragut getting some opportunities as well. Bristol controling the box. Crosses aren't effective...yet.
  4. I do not see Farragut falling to Hendersonville. Furthermore, I am baffled by your analysis of the Bearden and Collierville game. Bearden vulnerable to the counter? Bearden throwing all of their dogs forward? Bearden keeps their defensive shape as well as any team that I have seen. While their playing style is not easy on the eyes, they have proven to be very successful at grinding out 1-0 wins this year. Maybe I have not been watching Bearden closely enough though, but I, too, think that they will beat Collierville rather easily. I DO think that Hendersonville is capable of beating Farragut, but it is going to take an off night from Farragut and a tremendous effort from Hendersonville. Farragut WILL score, and I just can't see Muth, Wayman, and Kendrick stumbling again this year. Farragut has the best midfield in the state, but a lot of people forget that they have the best defense in the state too. Farragut wins 2-0 in the finals over (hmmm....) Bearden or Hendersonville. Now...assuming that Bearden and Hendersonville both get through, Bearden/Hville II could be a great match! GREAT TO SEE THAT SOMEONE ELSE HAS AN OPINION!!!!! Fair enough on the Bearden analysis as they did not send as many players forward vs. Hendersonville as they did against Siegel and Cordova (granted these are the only Bearden games I was able to watch) and our (Siegel and Cordova) records / reputations were no where near Hendersonville's. BTW who is #14 (red carded player) for Farragut? Hendersonville seemed to wilt under the sun...Hope there are ice baths in their future and their legs hold up for the Semi Finals or my predictions are in serious jeopardy.
  5. State Quarter Finals Farragut - 3 White Station - 0 Centennial - 1 Lavergne - 1 Centennial wins in PKs 4-2 (Great run by Coach McMillan, every elimination game for Lavergne has gone to OT - still be rooting for you 7AAA) Hendersonville - 3 Riverdale - 1 Earlier in the season I though Hendersonville and Ravenwood were the two best teams that we played all year. They possess well, finish chances, and have solid keeping...a good combination. RHS will play hard but are a little outmanned in this one. Collierville - 0 Bearden - 3 Clueless about Collierville. If you match the intensity of Bearden from the start and can counter well, you will get some good opportunities against Bearden. They committ so many players to the attack that they can be vulnerable to the quick counter. Not in this one... State Semi Finals Farragut - 2 Centennial - 0 Bristol keeps Centennial in the game. Farragut experience pays off. Bearden - 1 Hendersonville - 2 Redemption from a regular season game in which Hendersonville appeared to be the stronger team. PK was the deciding factor in the first match which saw Hendersonville control possession for long periods of time. Commandos get their revenge. State Finals Hendersonville - 2 Farragut - 1 OT Why not? Even the mighty can fall. Happy early wedding present for former Assistant Coach Lee!
  6. Goal differential: Riverdale - +5 Lavergne - +1 Siegel - +3 Blackman - +2 Oakland - +1 Smyrna - -14
  7. East / West All Star Game, Saturday, November 14 at Drake's Creek, Hendersonville, TN Wow! I probably got about as close to coaching a college soccer team as I will ever get. What an outstanding line up. After talking with many of the head coaches whose players were represented on the team we chose to play a 4-4-2 against the West. Warm ups were fun. These girls were not only some of the best in the state but they were so charasmatic, a lot of fun to be around. I especially had a good time talking with Savannah from Brentwood, Kiersten from Bearden, and Lauren from Dobyns Bennett. Katie Jones was phenomenonal. She controlled the middle of the field like it was her back yard. Very composed on the ball, effortless passer of the ball, and solid defensively. Taylor and Alexis swept up most attacks from their defensive positions and Hannah dominated from the right wing. Up top, pick your poison. Kerbi made some great runs and Jennifer Lee was awesome. Great ball control, speed, and always seemed to be in the right position in the box to make plays. First goal - Good possession from East side, ball comes in from the left flank on a pass from Stephanie Surgerner to Katie Jones. Jones ripped a shot off the cross bar from 25 yards (glad the goal was anchored). Rebound comes to the feet of crashing Lee who finds the back of the net. "Stankie Leg" celebration ensues. (1-0 East) Second goal - Hannah makes great run down the right side rewarded with well paced pass, Hannah beats defender on the dribble, Shot from top of the 18 side netting far post. Incredibly versitile player. (2-0 East) Halftime Third goal - West broke us down in transition with their 3 forwards. On a bouncing ball down the middle West forward pushes the ball into the net with outside of her right foot. Great finish. Don't have their names...(2-1) Fourth goal - I have coached Kerbi for four years and this the best goal I have seen her strike. Receives the ball on the top right corner of the 18. Cuts back to her left and strikes a bent ball around the keeper, top shelf back post. (3-1 East) Fifth goal - mirror image of Hannah's first goal. Hats off to all the parents that attended, thanks to the girls for being understanding and in some cases playing in positions that are not "natural positions" to them, and a big thank you to Russ Plummer, Bill McCloskey, and Eric Turner for organizing this event. It was a huge success, i would estimate the crowd at around 75-100. Selection for the team was made by coaches that are registered members of the THSSCA. The purpose of the Tennessee High School Soccer Coaches Association is to promote the sport of high school soccer across the state of Tennessee. THSSCA is the official voice of high school soccer coaches to the state of Tennessee High School Athletic Association and works to recognize the statewide accomplishments of student-athletes, referees, and coaches. THSSCA also works to promote the professional development of high school soccer coaches. http://www.thssca.com/ If your coach is not a member then he/she can not be a part of the process of recognizing the statewide accomlishments of student-athletes. This organization is relatively new and we need the support of all coaches through their membership. The more members and support we are able to garner the more serious other organizations will take our sport. If you are a parent and are part of a booster club organization in support of soccer, make sure to budget for dues for your coach so that your players can be eligible for these awards.

  10. Wouldn't believe it unless I saw it but Smyrna has the best field in Rutherford County. Great grass, cut short, great bleacher section. Just got to get the band to practice somewhere else...I'm kind of jealous.

Thanks to all that came out to the Siegel vs. Riverdale match. Not the result we wanted on the field but the donations from the evening made the loss a little more bearable...$3,124.56. The Siegel community thanks you!

  15. Tuesday, April 28 at Siegel High School Kickoff - 7:00 All the proceeds from the Siegel / Riverdale match will be donated to the Good Friday tornado relief efforts. Specifically to help those students (24) which have been displaced because of the tornado. We have reached an agreement with Modern Woodmen Fraternal Financial in which they are going to match our donation up to $2500. I understand it has been a few weeks since the event, however this game usually draws one of the larger crowds and we wanted to contribute as much as possible. If you're in the area stop by for some great soccer and take advantage of this opportunity to help those in need. Thanks

Not close to over. Unless you are assuming higher seeded teams are going to pull out wins and that is a scarry proposition with high school kids. Two games left for Blackman (Oakland and Cookeville) Two games left for Siegel (Lebanon and Riverdale) Any slip ups and you will be running into RHS earlier rather than later in the post season. It will be tough for anyone to catch Riverdale
  17. Any score from Shelbyville and OHS?
  18. Great point about doing your research before you leap into a camp... We have attended the UTC Camp for the past three years and have been pleased for several reasons. Great facilities and lodging. Excellent coaching. We have been working with John Ireland, the head girl's coach from Lipscomb University, and have been very pleased with his coaching. The girl's have been very receptive to his coaching style and I learn something I can bring home and use with our team as well. Prior to each camp, I have dialog with the coaching staff and specifically with Coach Ireland and I am able to give him some insight into our program and our goals for the week. This makes the experience very team specific and maximizes our time on the field. If we don't need to work on instep passing we can move on to zonal defending or something more advanced. As the camp progresses new plans often have to be made to address certain deficiencies. I meet with John and the other coaches each night and talk about different activities, ideas and coaching philosphies. I like this and it works for us. Rooming accomodations and food are great. Plus, we like being in downtown Chattanooga. We regularly walk downtown to check out the river front and sometimes over the pedestrian bridge to Clumpy's for ice cream. UTC camp offers us a way to get away from Middle Tennessee which is great for team building purposes. This is the best time for most girls because of the opportunity to explore a city as a team. We always come back with great memories and a greater sense of camaraderie. Can you get this from attending other camps? Maybe, but this works for us. Are all the girl's on the team recruited by college coaches? No. Some girls don't want to play college, some girls want to play college but don't want to admit it because if they don't get a college scholarship they feel like they don't deserve to play. Whatever the scenario, I do know this. Several of my players have been approached by the coaching staff at the camp and had meaningful discussions concerning the prospect of playing soccer in college Though there has only been one player on my team, Hayley Sloan - UTC signee, that ended up playing college soccer as a result of this camp I am glad that other players at least left with the confidence to openly consider playing soccer at the collegiate level. though their future conversations with these coaches from camp did not result in scholarships, I am glad the experience allowed them explore this option. Will an assistant college coach or high school coach that is working a camp be able to offer this experience, no. This is what sets UTC apart from other camps and appeals to our program. If cost is your only concern then this might not be the camp for you. There are other less expensive camps to attend that may fit your needs. But we've tried it and it works for us. Team camps were some of my fondest memories of high school soccer. As a player at Oakland, we went to the Western Kentucky team soccer camp each year and it was the high light of my summer...guess this explains why I am coaching now...so I would be careful about saying that it is a waste of money. Often the players take things away from the camps that they never anticipated. Great learning experience, chance to experience a little bit of what college life is like, learn soccer, and have fun!+ well worth the money.

  20. A total of 405 soccer teams (150 boys, 255 girls) from throughout the United States have earned the NSCAA Team Academic Award for exemplary performance in the classroom as a team during the 2007-08 academic year. Among these programs are 59 schools receiving honors for both their boys and girls teams. To qualify for the award, the team must have a minimum grade point average of 3.25 for the entire academic year. The team GPA is determined by adding every player's GPA, then dividing by the number of players. 23. Reason for change is correct, but wrong school. Riverdale moved it's football game. Game is at Riverdale. Funny how we just figured out that October 31 is Halloween last weekend. Guess that's what happens when your football team is out of the playoffs... not to say that it wouldn't have happened at Siegel if we were in the same situation.
  24. Add Holy Cross, Maryland to the preseason.
  25. Back in the day Western was the only D-1 soccer program close to middle TN. Holmes was always one of the coaches that (as a player) you wanted to catch the eye of. Class act from all of the experiences that I have had with him as a player that attended two of his camps and a coach that escorted my teams to his camp. In the same breath that I use to condemn the actions of Western, more pressure should be place on the Sunbelt to add men's soccer. That would include adding men's soccer to MTSU as well. God bless the day that a soccer dad or mom is named AD at any of these schools. Sad, Sad day.
