Tough playoff loss for Ravenwood last night, hats off to Blackman and good luck to them for the rest of their run. A great season for the raptors, but like all teams who have a season end this way, many of the seinors were devastated that their football lives that started around age 4 and 5 were now over forever. It's a shame but they now must move on with life, however I think there is a way for many teams and their players to end their run on a high note.
That solution lies in a postseason format that nobody has thought of, but I believe is the best. So how does it work? For public schools, we divide each school into one of five classifications, with each class having 8 districts, sort of like the old playoff system. Here's the twist, only the district champions make it to the playoffs. Teams that finish 2nd through 5th play a bowl game with a chance to end their seasons with a win. 2nd place teams play 5th place teams in another district, and 3rd place teams play 4th place teams. So how do the playoffs work that the champions make it to? Each of the 8 district winners are randomly drawn into two 4-team groups where those four teams play a round robin. That takes 3 weeks. The top two teams in each group make the semi-finals with the winners playing for a gold ball.
But the money driven tssaa would not like going back to only five classes. Many people do not like that. Many people also do not like that non financial aid private schools can compete with public schools. So my idea is that the 6a class is replaced by what I would call division 3, a division exclusively for non financial aid private schools. There are enough schools like that for about 4 districts. Most of those schools are on the smaller side so one classification is all that is nessasary. Just like the public schools, only the district champs make the playoffs, only 4 districts so the qualifiers go right to the semi-finals. Also like the public schools 2nd place plays 5th place in another district in a bowl and 4th plays 3rd in a bowl.
For division 2, the privates that recruit, single A works just like division 3 would. Both would have 4 districts so the format could be the same. For division II-AA, three teams make the playoffs, those teams would be the the champion and runner-up from East/Middle reigion and the champion from the West reigion. The best of those three teams gets a bye to the championship and would play the winner from the other two teams. Only allowing two teams from East/Middle could add more meaning to the already heated Ensworth-Brentwood Acadamy-MBA trivially. Whoever finishes 3rd in East/Middle will go to a bowl game and play the 3rd place team in the West. The other bowl game would feature the 4th place team in East/Middle and the West runner-up.
So that is what I think is the best postseason format. What about you? What small tweeks would you make. Would you scap the whole thing? Do you like it the way it is without any changes. Tell me what you think. I want to hear your opinion.
