  1. Lets just have Apple create a robot referee to call all the games. Don't have to pay them and don't have to worry about cheating. But wait, if we did that, what would people get on message boards to complain about?
  2. Good question. If it truly was a punch, then an ejection is warranted. I would be willing to guess that a referee blew his/her whistle, all three looked at the table to see which way the arrow was pointing, and none of the officials saw the punch, just the aftermath. Just a guess though
  3. I think this type of thread is started every year on one of the two basketball forums. Every year there will be bad officiating, we all (Fans and Most Officials) just hope that it doesn't affect the true outcome of the games. But when it is all said and done, just remember that it is a game, and there a many things in life more important than basketball.
  4. The reason you always hear the phrase, if you don't like the officiating, go take the test and become one, is because the lack of "quality" officials in any high school district is astounding. The "bad" refs that everyone hates to see come into the gym, are there because there isn't anyone better behind them trying to get their games. The good refs move on to college basketball and eventually leave the high school arena. Thus why it is high school basketball. Pay your $5, yell for your team, yell at the refs, but keep it clean. Think about what the implications of "You Suck" and "We got screwed" really mean. Pretty vulgar if you ask me. Just my $.02
  5. Someone should create a survey to send to these transferred players and see if it truly was in the "player's best interest". The majority of the time it is the parent's best interest and their interest only. The players probably do not want to change schools and change friends. Do any of you remember being a teenager? Could you imagine trying to change schools at age 15 and make new friends all over again?
  6. You will have a tough match up with either Eagleville or Clarksville Academy.
  7. Marshall County is hitting their peak at the right time. I know atleast half the season they were missing their best 3-point shooter with a collar-bone injury, looks like with him back the 3 balls will be raining again. From what I was told earlier in the year when he got hurt, he was leading the state in 3-pointers at the time of his injury. I do not believe it was a fluke, or just a great game that led to Marshall shooting the ball so well. They've got a dominant big man that plays the point, and shooters all around him when he drives the ball. Good luck to Marshall the rest of the way.
  8. Just throwing my two cents in for what it's worth. Referring to your comment about coaches are replaced and players are benched for not doing a good enough job... Imagine trying to replace a coach when you have zero other applicants, or the only applicant was a middle school coach that had 1 year of experience, and you knew you'd be throwing him into the fire so to speak. That would be similar to the jobs the assignors try to do. Also, imagine trying to sub in for a player that's having a bad game when you either have an empty bench or the next closest thing is a brand new player that knows none of the plays, just knows a little about the game? See where I'm trying to go with this? Coaches play the best 5 players they have on their bench (atleast we hope they do), assignors for the TSSAA put the best officials they can out there night to night. The third legs are out there because without them we'd have 1 and maybe 2 officials on each game each night... Hince why you see better officiating as you get deeper into the season, with fewer and fewer games going on. Region and Substate should have some of the better officials and the State tournament will have, well, should have the best officials the state has to offer. Just something to think about. /ph34r.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="ph34r.gif" />
  9. They can appeal, but from past experiences this probably will not be overturned as it was deemed in the official's jurisdiction that the elbow was flagrant and warranted a flagrant technical (which is what resulted in the ejection). You will never see TSSAA over-rule an official??™s jurisdiction. You can debate all day the official in question, or the call in question, but it??™s not going to change anything. The ejection will go to the state office for review as do all ejections. If the TSSAA deems that the official had poor judgment, I??™m sure there will be some sort of reprimand. But again, it goes back to the TSSAA never questioning judgment calls, and as they say these judgment calls are made in good faith.
  10. This may be a dumb question.. but how can you have a sideline seat that is under the bucket? Last time I checked, no buckets were located on the sidelines unless you're referring to those practice goals that are on the sides in some gyms. /roflol.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":roflol:" border="0" alt="roflol.gif" />
  11. I guess I will just be a moron then. The good refs move on and move up in the world of officiating. The bad ones, or the so called 3rd legs, will keep hanging around high school basketball. Why? Because there aren't enough out there to cover every game, thus these guys/gals that pay their money, take their test get to go out on a Tuesday or Friday night and referee. Are they bad? Probably. Can you do anything about it but whine and complain on a message board? Probably not. Until you can convince the TSSAA to compete with the pay of college games, I doubt you will convince any of these so-called better refs, to stick around high school basketball very long. Have you sent in your money and gotten your test yet? I believe they have their camps in the summer. It's not too late for you LF. /roflol.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid=":roflol:" border="0" alt="roflol.gif" />
  12. Went to a game the other night, and saw some great play out of 4 of the starters for one team. But boy, that 5th starter, man he was bad. I bet he had 8 turnovers, went 0-7 from the field and 0-4 from the free throw line. He needs to quit playing basketball, we should replace him with one of the guys on the bench, or heck, lets just play 4 on 4 instead. Listen to yourselves. I'm not trying to bash the "good" officials, only the "bad" ones. I would be willing to bet that every "good" official that you've seen has had a few bad games in their career. I bet when they started out they were one of the so-called "third-legs" that you all keep referring too. I do not officiate any sport, but have a ton of respect for the guys and gals that put on the stripes and step out onto the floor. I've been in gyms before where it seems that people pay their $5 just to get in the gym and yell at the refs. All of the frustrations from their day/week at work or home has built up so now they just let it all rain down on a 20 something year old referee who is trying to learn how to referee the game. Are there some bad officials out there who don't know the game? Sure there are, but i would be willing to bet that they don't go out there trying to screw over one team and have a "biased" opinion as to who should win the game. The reason these guys are working high school basketball and not on the level you are saying they should be working is because of the lack of officials. All I can say is if you think you can do better, and you want to weed out those "third-legs" get out there and do it. Someone posted earlier how to become a registered ref, get out there and show us all how it is done.
  13. Johnson kid from Marshall County scored the last 2 of his 42 points of the game with three seconds to go in overtime to lead Marshall County over Spring Hill last night. Saw two great players going at it in MC's Johnson and Spring Hill's Williams. Two very talented young men. Any thoughts on the game?
  14. Great thought to suspend refs for not knowing rules or not getting plays correct, but then we would be playing games without refs. The biggest problem with the refereeing not only in the TSSAA is that there aren't enough to go around. You suspend a few officials for a night and you're now stretching to just fill the games, much less fill the games with quality officials. Just some numbers: In one association: 36 high schools, 50 middle schools. Worse Case Scenerio each high school and each middle school hosts a game. That's 108 high school refs, and 100 middle school refs for a total of 208 people refereeing that night. Now that's a little exaggerated because I do not believe that there will ever be a time when every school hosts. A normal situation would be half of the schools hosting which is still 54 high school refs in one night if there are no middle school games going on. See where I'm going with this? It would be ideal to be able to dicipline these refs, but I don't think it would be realistic. They're always looking for people that know the game and can run a little bit.
