  1. Word to the wise.... if you're not the one who was slammed, don't make assumptions about ability to continue the match. A body slam is illegal if the referee says it is illegal - simple as that. I understand that it may be hard for some of you to believe, but a person sitting in the stands has no say in the call. If a wrestler lifts his opponent off the mat, he is then responsible for placing him back on the mat without slamming him. If he fails to do so, then any resulting dq is on him, not on anyone else, regardless of what you wanted to happen. I wish both wrestlers and their coaches well - time to move on.
  2. Neither Smyrna's coach nor the Smyrna wrestler created this situation; the situation was created when one of the wrestlers chose to use an illegal and potentially dangerous move. If the Soddy kid was such a far superior wrestler, perhaps he shouldn't have slammed his opponent. I didn't see what happened, but there is rarely a need to slam, especially an inferior wrestler. This is unfortunate, but my view is that if you break the rules, you flirt with the dq, simple as that.
  3. You beat me to this one.....but only because I was laughing at the original post too hard to type.
  4. May be beyond the scope of this thread, but can someone please explain to me why we have two separate D1 individual state championships? If a kid from BGA has to beat wrestlers from Baylor, Ryan and CBHS to be crowned state champion, why can't a kid from Alcoa compete against individuals from Bradley and Cleveland (or Riverdale for that matter) ?
  5. Wow - that is impressive. Who is it and what weight?
  6. Sorry to intrude on your victimization rant - just don't see the hurtful and hateful "personal attacks" which you continue to bring up. btw, victimization is really in vogue right now, so I will just say, "you go, girl" and leave it at that.
  7. If you would take your head out of the sand and peer about, you would understand that many share the thoughts expressed by Coach Brooks. I have the utmost respect for Coach Martin and his staff, but can't say the same of Coach Maddux after watching the way the basketball program has operated in recent years. Unfortunately, that loss of respect colors my view of the entire institution, both school and church. Sorry, but that's my opinion and there are many, many others who feel the same way. You can whine at Coach Brooks and others on this board all you want, but the athletic department's actions speak far louder than do your words.
  8. Some people believe that CPA has acted properly, some people don't. What does it add to pick each other's posts apart? Have at it, but it doesn't add anything to the discussion.
  9. Ensworth is a different team this year. They had absolutely no height last year, which made them have to try to beat BA at BA's game. This year they have a very talented 14 year-old freshman who is 6'8". They also have another freshman about the same height. This allows them to play a different game than they did last year and has freed up the guards for more open outside shots. Just so the D2 haters know, both of the freshman to whom I refer were at Ensworth Middle School last year. Not saying that Ensworth is gonna win it all, just saying that there are three very good teams in D2-AA this year and things should be interesting down the stretch. Home court will be important until they get to Lipscomb. I haven't seen either McCallie or Briarcrest, so I am not counting either of them out at this point either.
  10. CBHS beat BA by 7 in a tournament in Florida over the holidays. Regardless of what you seem to think, BOTH teams, along with Ensworth), are contenders for the title this year.
  11. It appears that you are mistaken. The following is directly from the USJ web site: USJ offers financial aid for tuition. FACTS, a national, independent firm, reviews financial information submitted and determines if your family qualifies for financial aid. I have no dog in this fight - just think the discussion is more useful if it is accurate.
  12. Based on your prior statements, I'm shocked that Baylor and McCallie didn't get into a bidding war for the Georgia free-agents, offering these kids free education, jobs for their families, new cars, cash, etc.
  13. There is a definitive answer to your question - we would all benefit if people bothered to look up the rules before posting about something they know nothing about. The following is directly from the TSSAA rulebook. In your scenario (the "full ride"), if the payor is other than a parent, bona fide guardian or family member, the school has cheated and is subject to disciplinary action. Unless DaChampsAgain (and/or his unnamed "father" acquaintance) was flat-out lying, then Baylor was in clear violation of the rules. If so, they need to report this to TSSAA. More likely, this is just BS born of jealousy. Baylor and all of the other D2 schools are about far more than athletics. They are, among other things, about helping kids evolve into productive members of society and are also about furthering that goal by helping kids get accepted into schools like Harvard, Princeton, etc. If you think that Baylor is going to risk the reputation that it has painstakingly built up over decades in order to land this "hot golfer", then I suggest that you are kidding yourself. Better yet, take a look at the list of those schools that the TSSAA has caught cheating in recent years; they are almost all Division 1 schools. Tuition and Financial Aid Section 16. If tuition is charged, it must be paid by parent, bona fide guardian or other family member. If a parent, guardian or other family member secures a loan for payment of tuition, it must remain an obligation of the parents, guardian or other family member to repay the principle and interest in full with no exceptions. Any loan program, grant program, educational foundation or similar program that is established and/or administered, in whole or in part, by a school or official of a school is considered financial aid. Financial aid will be allowed under the following conditions: 1. Children of full-time faculty members may be given financial aid, but such students, if transfers, shall be ineligible for 12 months in any sport in which they have an athletic record for the previous or current year. 2. Financial aid may be awarded on the basis of need, but proof of such need must be filed in the TSSAA office on forms approved by the Executive Director. In order to determine the basis for need, all schools awarding financial aid shall use one of the following services in order to determine the basis for need: FACTS Grant and Aid Assessment (FACTS), Financial Aid for School Tuition (FAST), School and Student Scholastic Service for Financial Aid (SSS), Family Financial Needs Assessment (FFNA), Private School Aid Services, or Smart Tuition Aid. Schools must choose one of the companies for all student-athletes. A committee consisting of School Heads from Division II schools and one ex-officio, non-voting member from the Board of Control and Legislative Council will meet and make recommendations to the Board of Control on each student submitted. In addition, this committee will collect information from schools regarding financial aid statistics, grant procedures, and the overall financial aid program within the school. The Board of Control will then rule on all cases at the August meeting. The Board of Control shall have authority to reject the basis of need for students when in its opinion, or in the opinion of the school committee, the amount of need stated by the financial service cannot be justified. Schools shall remove any student from athletic eligibility whose accounts with the school are 60 days overdue. All records pertaining to financial aid or tuition assistance shall be open to TSSAA upon its request. Each school shall be responsible for securing necessary authorization to allow TSSAA to review or audit such records.
  14. I agree with you that the top of D2 is better, in most years, than is the top of D1. That said, however, I take issue with you. Please define"schollys" as used in your post. Do you even know the TSSAA rules? If so, you wouldn't be tossing that word around, because it doesn't work the way you imply. D2 can give need-based financial aid only to help cover the cost of a private education. I said "help cover", because in no case does it cover the entire cost. How much do the Bradley students pay to attend their school? Less than those that attend FRHS, I assure you.
  15. WHAT?????? This is one of the most ignorant statements I have ever seen on these boards. If this is true, then your coach better be dealing with the major attitude problem on his team and you are not in position to win anything. This statement does not accurately describe any of the teams that I saw at the duals last weekend.
  16. What about CPA? Since they would naturally fit into your AAA West (natural rivalries with Ensworth, BA and MBA), perhaps you could slide them in there and move St. George's down to AA West?
  17. Nice. Has athletic "success" trumped true Christian values at NCS? If you are representative of the "Christian" school atmosphere at NCS, I am not interested.
  18. Congrats to NCS - you have a good team and I hope your kids enjoy your success. I have not read through all 68 pages of this thread, but I have read enough that it is clear that some (not all) of the NCS supporters are willing to provide misinformation about other schools (by name) in some misguided attempt to try to make NCS "look better". First, JP2 doesn't have 100 athletes on the sidelines and unlimited linemen platooning in and out throughout the game. In reality, JP2 had about 54 kids that dressed for football this fall. NCS has about 57. By contrast, Ensworth had about 66, with 8 seniors (far less seniors than NCS according to one of the NCS posters). Most of the linemen, as well as the other players, on both JP2 and Ensworth play both ways. In fact, the Ensworth qb this year not only played on offense and defense, but often on special teams as well. In short, the NCS "excuse" on here that they have far less players than JP2 is false. Second, and of more importance, your implication that Ensworth somehow uses these kids and spits them out after their athletic eligibility is used up is completely baseless. You should be ashamed of yourself for spreading such lies when you have no idea of what you are saying. In fact, Ensworth has a rigorous academic curriculum which is the same for all students. They have very high entry standards and try very hard to not admit students who may not be able to keep up academically. You would be surprised if you knew some of the athletes who applied to but were refused admission to Ensworth. There are a few kids (both athletes and not) who start at Ensworth and discover that they cannot or will not meet the academic requirements. These students leave Ensworth and go to a school that is a better match for their intellect and/or energy level. Contrary to the implication on another post in this thread, "Tiny" decided to leave Ensworth (for reasons which are none of our business) after playing only a couple of games his senior season - the team persevered and won their first State championship without him. He was not "used" and discarded by Ensworth. Ensworth and NCS are dissimilar schools. Ensworth is a college prep school where every student who graduates is expected to matriculate at a college or university following their graduation. Recent graduates are now studying at Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Johns Hopkins, etc. (this list is available on their web site). NCS, on the other hand, is set up to assist all kinds of students to successfully attend high school. The following is but one example of a "special program" from their web site: "High school: Courses at the high school level are mandated by Tennessee state standards and college preparatory requirements, which inhibit the option for language arts and math skills. Students may be taught individually or grouped with a remediation to occur within the curriculum. Alternate courses are offered to students that may need a slower pace of instruction and/or modified curriculum. The alternate class may or may not meet college preparatory requirements. They may also affect type of diploma a student may earn. Course offerings include: English, Math, Spanish and Science. Alternate course offerings may change yearly based on the needs of the student body. For additional information refer to theFour Year Academic Plan" No mention is made as to whether the students enrolled in this program are eligible for athletics. Neither type of school is inherently "better" than the other, but it is ludicrous for NCS posters to try to imply that their school is somehow superior to any other school. This should be a good game - hope for a close contest with no injuries either way.
  19. That was 2011; Baylor won the first game 42-14 while Ensworth won the rematch in the state final 48-10. In 2013, BA destroyed Ensworth during the season 36-10 and Ensworth won the rematch in the state semi-final game 21-12. Last year, Ensworth beat MBA in a high scoring game during the regular season (I think it was 50-48 or something like that in overtime) but the Big Red beat Ensworth in a low scoring contest (10-7) in the state final.
  20. The last couple of years have been tough for me to pick a team in this championship game - attended MBA, kids attended Ensworth and now have a nephew that plays at BA. No disrespect to the Big Red, because I am confident that I would say this about any other hs team in the State this year, but BA overall has the better athletes. MBA appears to have better coaching, but not by much. As always, I think the intangibles favor MBA. My bottom line: I think this game will be much closer than the game between these two earlier this year, but I think that BA has the horses to pull it out. Whatever happens, it should be a fun game to watch!
  21. Agreed. I don't think it's fair to expect too much from a freshman in that league, no matter how tall he is.
  22. I hope you realize that he was simply replying to a post from someone who specifically asked his opinion on the matter. When responding to the direct question, do you suggest that he lie? I for one value his opinion on matters which he is in position to know much about.
  23. Not from Memphis. You must have forgotten that CBHS was up by 11 at the half of the championship game - BA clawed their way back and took home the gold ball. Great game by the Eagles, but CBHS was every bit as good and could have won that game. If you think the result of "summer games" indicates who will win a tournament game, then you are also probably one of those who brags about how well your football team did in scrimmages. I like both BA and CBHS. There is a lot of hoops to be played between now and the championship game and I look forward to every game. Should be a good year in D2-AA boys basketball.
  24. None of the above - I'll take Christian Brothers High School.
