1. No direspect meant, but in two games I have not seen anything out of this group of young men that would support your statement. They were scrappy and well coached, but not all that athletic. I would put most of your players in the same league with McEwen, Cloudland and a couple of the Perry County starting five. They are better than average ball players, but not super athletes. Several of these schools have boys that play multiple sports and their programs have done well because of them. IMO the most athletic player in the tournament other than those on BTW and Lake Co. is Jacob Tucker, sorry he just is! In addition, I didn't see anyone on your team that I would mark as a true finess basketball player and Perry County also has some of these. Not saying you can't beat them at this point anything is possible, but if FCS plays like they have been and Perry County continues their run of this week this one COULD be ugly! I just hope that your coach finds a different way to get the edge in this one, cause if the Vikings are rowing hard I will be one angry fan when FCS holds the ball for 30 minutes and the score is 2 to 0!
2. I am not sure if they have changed the concept of Mr. Basketball or what? Newby is supposed to be the best in 1A this year, and Fountain is the best in all of East Tennessee? I thought Mr. Basketball was supposed to be a standout, someone who carried their team, who couldn't be replaced. I actually figured that this was the reason that Perry County didn't get a nod! They are such a good team that no one player always shines, but I was curious how players like Mullinicks from McEwen, the boy from Mt. Pleasant and Clarksburg were overlooked. Watching them all play this week I am even more confused. Tyler was good, but not Lake County's best, Fountain was invisible, and except for a highlight reel Newby was not impressive. Now before you all get upset these boys are all good players and deserving of respect, but none of them seemed irreplaceable! In fact I wouldn't even say any of them were the best on their team. Call me crazy, but if we are just going to randomly handout the trophy to someone then lets give it to the whole Perry County team they can put it in the trophy case next to the gold ball!
3. I would agree that this was not a well-played game by either team. McEwen failed to put together four good quarters and it cost them the game. They also fell into the foul trouble trap and they are just not the same with their subs on the floor, not bad but they play different. As bad as I hate to admit it because it irritates me holding the ball is a viable option. FCS coach used it wisely stopping the momentum of a better McEwen team, McEwen blew it by allowing it to last so long fouls or not. McEwen also waited entirely too long to press which gave FCS fits in the fourth, it was just too little too late. McEwen got beaten tonight by the bench, I almost would rather it had been that scrappy Cloudland bunch. FCS coach had better repack his back of tricks (or strategies) for tomorrow, because from what I saw today Perry County can put together 4 great quarters, they do a good staying out of foul trouble, and Coach Haston doesn't need a bag of anything he is prepared and so are his players. Congratulations to the young men from FCS, and the McEwen Warriors you had a great season. Fair warning to FCS, a ship full of trouble is headed your way, Row Vikings Row!!!!
4. Think the two crowds were pretty close, the gym was empty before and after those two games for sure! As far as McEwen being in the cheering section take a chill pill Guru, the PC faithful sometimes forget some people haven't ever been there and don't know all the rules. When those McEwen fans got there that section was pretty much empty because BTW had very few fans, when told about the rule several rows of McEwen students did move. There was no disrespect intended just a bunch of super excited fans showing up early to enjoy the tourney experience for the first time.
5. I have thought since the field narrowed to 16 that Lake Co. was the best overall team headed toward the state tournament. They are West Tennessee athletic, but are somewhat disciplined and very well coached. They managed to knock off the "favorites" today, and return much of last year's gold ball team, so they have proven themselves. However, this is one of the most unselfish and well-rounded Perry County teams in recent history. They are also seasoned veterans from last year, had the most impressive win today, and they have a great coach. The question is not can they beat Lake County, the question is will they. This will be a great game and the team ahead when the buzzer sounds will determine who wins, certainly not you! Anyone who counts out a good Perry County team in the State Tournament really ought to just pack up and move to far west Tennessee, you know around Memphis they tend to count Perry County out too and on more than one occasion it has come back to bite them!
6. The Cloudland team played with a lot of heart, and that kept them in this game. McEwen is a talented team, better than what they played tonight. Each of McEwen's starters, and their main subs brings a different skill to the team, but they tend to need a big night scoring from one of the Mullinicks boys to seal the deal. If they could all play well on the same day they would be able to hang with anyone in the tournament, but so far that hasn't happened. Could a McEwen team playing at their best blow out Cloudland, maybe...maybe not, doesn't really matter they didn't! What does matter is that ugly or not they won, the jitters should be gone and tomorrow is a new day. I personally hope this is the day we see McEwen put it all together good defense, solid shooting, and most importantly good choices from the whole team. If they do that they will be playing for gold on Saturday! Congratulations to a good Cloudland team on a great season and best of luck next year!
7. I rarely post, tend to find alot of posters on here long on mouth and short on good sense, but enough already. How can any west Tennessee basketball fan think they are qualified to judge anyone east of the Tennessee? I watched all four single A games today and have drawn a few conclusions: 1. All of the boys on that floor played with heart and deserve everyone's respect. 2. Today the three Mr. Basketball finalist were no better than anyone else, maybe just a fact this year. 3. Not much in Tennessee basketball ever really changes. The teams from Memphis and the surrounding area are naturally athletic and their bench is usually full of talented subs. However, they tend to have little discipline, basketball IQ, and in many cases are poorly coached (Lake Co. current coach an obvious exception)but many times they win, go on to play college ball and fit well in the NBA style system. One reason I personally don't watch the NBA honestly no game to in IMO. Anyone who tries to say they aren't good is simply lying to themselves. That being said the rest of the state plays old school Indiana style basketball, where you out play, out smart, and out coach each other and the best team wins. For me that is basketball, and no one has the right to say I am wrong, it is my opinion. Our state tournament is and always has been a competition between these styles. Sometimes talent wins, sometimes heart wins, but usually they best teams get there. You can have the talent, I will keep what I am sure you would call boring basketball and judging from the size of the crowd in Murphy Center watching those boring games I'd say I am in good company!
8. can anyone give me a score on tonight's championship game?
9. Where we live in western middle TN basketball is GOD!!! We don't care about anything like we do the roundball. Out of curiosity, how many of these recent champs from the East will still be playing single A ball after this year? I know several of the region 5 teams will be moving up due to the new factoring for private schools!
10. Just goes to show you that you don't have to be a boy in Perry County to win the coveted title of best player in Class A..
11. Look, anyone who is nominated for Mr. Basketball is deserving. Puckett is a stand-up kid who is smart enough and atheletic enough to cut it at Tulane if he wants to! Anyone who watched McEwen play ball knows they did not get the chance to play the caliber of teams necessary to prepare for a run at the state. That doesn't diminish his abilities or make him less deserving of the award. He would have been a stand-out anywhere he played and those who know him are proud of his accomplishments!!!!!!!
12. Does anyone know have an update on the McEwen game?
13. Apparently you have not spent much time looking at region 5 if you are so sure that CPA is the best there is to offer. They have been beaten by a #8 ranked McEwen and district 12A has #2 Wayne County, and #3 Mount Pleasant. All of these teams play harder than CPA and have easily as much talent. I would not count any of these schools out. Just because they are almost all public and from really small counties doesn't mean they aren't competitive. Just check out the season records, and district finishes. McEwen has a Mr. Basketball finalist. Don't COUNT on seeing CPA in the boro!!! quote=ChrisBurr555555,Mar 9 2004 - 11:42 AM] Quarterfinals Rockwood 64,Christ Presbyterian Academy 32 Grace 55,Greenfield 20 Unaka 52,Franklin Road Academy 25 Temple 99,Halls 98,4OT Semifinals Rockwood 87,Grace 86,4OT Temple 94,Unaka 93,4OT Finals Rockwood 112,Temple 111,4OT 2004 Boys Class A State Basketball Champions:Rockwood TIGERS 825201989[/snapback]
14. This is a young and very talented group of girls. They also have a deep bench that can come in at anytime and take over where the others left off. Just how good are these girls and how good can they get before this group of juniors gets to be seniors? Can anyone stop Weatherly? She's big, and she's tough. Lookout tourney, here they come..
15. I attended the McEwen game last night against Heritage and I do believe that this was the worse display of officiating I have ever seen in my life. I don't see how these three officials slept at all last night. The gate receipts are how they are paid so I hope you all fell good about your admission fee when you walked in last night.
