Exactly what I was thinking while reading that except the drop to 1A does not ease the pain like 3 down to 2. Elite 1A teams can play in the 2A league right to the top. '16 Dresden '22 McKenzie, & that '19 or so Lake County team could have won gold in 2A as well. It don't work that way in 3A There are several entire 1A Regions wouldn't have what Union City has within it's boundaries. But it is what it is.
-
Still think it's funny there is more talk about all this on the 1A/2A page than the 3/4 as everybody knows this is where they'll be next re-align to get away from the bigger dogs. We've seen this show before.
-
Yeah they played each other 2 years in a row and that's impressive in itself for both teams. MBA came to Martin this time & they are a well coached group. Martin probably played their worst game of the year. Especially the second half, but mistakes just kept feeding MBA the ball & they took full advantage of it. Should have been a closer contest but, but it was MBA's day. 42-17?? I can't remember for sure but it didn't come down to a play or two.

Where does this leave Camden? They have rather nice facilities, they are a larger program, etc. Just conversation piece here, but why can't they attract a coach that can take the program to where they legit challenge their neighbors on a Friday night: Huntingdon, McKenzie or the like? Beating Bruceton is just not as impressive as it once was. Money doesn't seem to be a problem, just asking? It seems Martin is gonna have a parade and chalk off an annual McConnell Day holiday on the calendar because of the hire. Why can't Camden do this?
-
Well, on that second part, Going toe to toe with MBA this year lasted all of about 5 minutes. After dismantling Dyer County MS to get to the finals, MBA completely dominated MMS that game to win by 40-ish? But I do agree with Westviews overall program being in a better place now than his first tour. Lots of excitement around the new coaches and thats good for kids.
-
I'm still a little confused. No offense to the kids here, but Camden was not a good team. They would have lost to Dresden by 70 if they had played an entire game rather than a Jamboree 2023. It was the same way (or worse) in preseason scrimmages the 2 years prior to that. I just don't see what all the heroics are with the McConnell hire. Hope it works out for them. GAURANTEE they slide back to 2A. Chris Coleman on the other hand is the real hire to me. The kids loved him. Offense or defense, he was the one they ran to on the sideline excited after a big play. That says something about the respect he commanded & got from the team. He really put the energy into them & it showed.

Absolutely correct top to bottom.

Southtowner: This That & The Other III
SpottedGoat replied to Southtowner's topic in Class 1A & Class 2A
Just for conversation, & NOT trying to stir the "who's a cheater" pot. Class re-alignment throws everything around in NW Tennessee when a school or two changes class. Is it just here? How many schools from Class 1-2 or3 does this affect in middle or East TN? Are they in constant shift around mode too? -
Lexington is 4A, correct? Seems like an awesome position for a coach to me. Just seems like it would be. How does this affect Hardin or even Westview? The last big openings around I can think of.

West Tennessee Head Coaching Openings
SpottedGoat replied to SSHawks12's topic in Class 3A & Class 4A
I wish them well, but this is funny. They are only 3-6 against county rival 1A Dresden in the past decade (didn't play in '20). Those 3 wins were Ty Simpson. So, lets see who they've hired and how it works out before claiming they're gonna win the SEC or be enshrined in Canton. -
Probably all true. Especially pertaining to how much unity it takes from everyone for a program to get on the right path & stay on it through the thick & thin. Coaching and the associated management are very important, but lets put all that aside. Just for conversation sake; why would McNairy not have kids that could play? Showing 698 kid's at school from the last Classification, should be plenty to pick from, right? Is basketball king there? Being a school that size, do they offer SO many different things (sports, organizations, programs, ???) that it spreads the kids thin in football?

It'll be 2 weeks tomorrow for Westview! Saban was replaced in a mere 2 days. Seems like the center of the HS universe would be filled by now. Hmmm.....
-
Um, any sport at any school, a 3 year run of 4-23 would never support the player buy-in bit. Nope. Followed that with paragraphs of mostly gibberish on how the Principal, AD & coaches neither supported nor were truthful, yet they bought in? What?? Wes Johnson is a good guy. Loves the kids & football to his core. But, he also rose to the head coaching ranks far too fast. He should have spent more time as an assistant learning the ropes of how to manage all things that encompass a HS program. It's a very hard job to balance with help, much less when unprepared, unseasoned & undermined. I wish him & his family the best wherever this change leads them.

It was about 1999 when then UT-Martin Chancellor Phillip Conn decided that the football program as a whole would be canceled at UTM due to the massive monetary drag it was on the university that was also in basic default itself. Near zero fan support or community involvement & a guaranteed losing season had became the norm; it was a business decision. A rather unpopular one, & it never came to fruition. (He was basically run out of town & hired at Knoxville) Today, UTM holds a fantastic team, community involvement & a very good overall program. Like it or not, Jason Simpson is the biggest reason for this. Somewhere in the mix, Westview playing home games in that stadium may have helped to save the football program at UTM as they could not build their own & filled that venue with more people on any given Friday night than the Skyhawks would all season put together at that time. It would be foolish beyond belief to think Westview is not a premium place to coach football. Athletes, community support, money, it's all there in piles. Any coach looking to coach at this school is going to have the next Simpson, play games on his fathers field at UTM while being under that microscope & have to balance one heck of a rabid, political fan base. Westview simply didn't have the size in the trenches this year they are used to playing with. They lost arguably the best LB in their region prior to season & to me, that & more added up to the difference that cost Neal his job.

Southtowner: This That & The Other III

Yes, I'd never seen or heard of CJ before the ALl Star game in Alamo. Kid was absolutely EVERYWHERE causing trouble on defense that night. Played great -
This all sounds like Sweetwater 2.0.
-
It didn't the last time they were in 3A. Simpson came along, they magically slid back into 2A & won it all. The next Simpson hits High School this fall. This story will repeat itself with re-alligmnet next year.
-
Wow! Interesting. Thanks, this is surprising/non-surprising. It's almost like Special School DIstricts are the mob bosses of HS sports. Honestly, I'd never even heard of Liberty until the last few years. So, with that limited scope, you can imagine the perplexed look on my face when I read about Henry County & their esteemed history. LOL. So now I have family that plays HS soccer (Westview) & they played Madison Academic this year. Again, I had to look them up as I'd never heard of them either. Kids played good soccer, blah, blah. Will they be the new "it" team in line after Liberty- JCM? With JCM maybe half mile away, will that new stadium come into play for both schools? Or is the stadium another notch in the stick of pretty much what you explained before?
-
Lived my entire life in NWTN & this thread seems to have some heavy stuff here that I honestly had no idea. Somebody local to Henry County that's on their competitive level in HS football? Then goes 0-37? Shoved down? I'm not looking for a witch hunt here, I'm just missing the season being over & chatter on the T. So, just asking what has happened there over the past decade or so to have such a turn down? Politics? Crime? Money? Does this mirror what's happened to the once powerful Humboldt? Just for conversation.
-
Noah may retire at Gleason. Or be there until it's closed & they combine with Dresden (the closest in county neighbor). Whichever comes first. But he definitely deserves a shot to coach a bigger program if he chooses to.

20 games under .500 in a decade at Greenfield over a decade. Playoff appearances by default of the 4 seed & a good class of stud athletes that small schools get on occasion. & they exited in the second round I think. Now back at the helm of Greenfield & it's been a complete disaster of fights, player suspensions & 3 wins versus teams that went a combined 2 -29. "Make him tell you no?" Really? This is the best WC can attract? I don't believe that.
-
It's a wonder this doesn't happen every other game in HS gyms everywhere. Too many energized people in too small a space. At least in football we have a good 60 yards plus maybe a track & fresh air between home & opposing stands.
-
This is not surprising.
-
This is a good hire. Not my school but I hate to see him go from NW Tennessee. I can't speak for his time prior to his Obion Central years. But OCCHS was FAR MORE well known for their band than their football team before he got there. The energy & effort from that team was night & day different the last few years. There was definitely some buy in from the players. Why didn't he win more? He took this team from nothing to respectable. OCCHS is farm boy central. Just big strong country boys that love football but they don't have a long list of elite speedy athletes. We play them every year & they were a good group of kids that played good clean hard nosed ball the right way. Nobody hangs 60+ on Haywood as a fluke. There were glances of bigtime football at OCCHS with Justin Palmer.

Who will win the state title in 4A in 2024
SpottedGoat replied to Volsfan52's topic in Class 3A & Class 4A
I'm guessing Haywood will be 5 or 6A in a few years after they get that Ford plant up & running.
