  5. Traditionally, these inner city Memphis schools have one or two good players. The school systems really just don't focus on baseball as much as they do basketball and football. That's not to say they don't have some talent though. With that said, most don't make it out of the Friday games because of the time, money, and effort put in by the school systems. It is definatly not due to lack of effort or talent at these schools. There is a bunch of raw talent in these districts. With the right coaching and budgets from the schools, they could compete a whole lot more with the rest of the state. Also, if you look up the Commercial Appeal out of Memphis, you should be able to find some scores and information on these districts.
  6. USJ will now play Ripley, who beat Haywood Co. in the losers bracket, Tuesday in the early game. The winner of that will then play Covington in the night cap with the if necessary game to follow on Wednesday.

  12. There is no jealosy or disloyalty or anything else of that nature in my last post. I have all the respect in the world for everyone of the highschool athletes,as I myself was one. My entire point was that coming into this season I knew that Covington was not going to be the best team in the state in 3A. I coached quite a few of the boys that play for the Chargers. I'm not taking anything away from them, they are talented but beatable. I am a realist, not someone who thinks that their team is the greatest every year. That is the big difference between myself and most other people. I do bleed purple and gold, but there is no disloyalty in being real with people. As for OC beating the Chargers, like I said I'm a realist and anything can happen on any givien Friday night.
  13. To be honost, it really doesn't matter where the sportswritters or fans or anyone else for that matter thinks a team should be ranked. Case and point, an underrated OC team knocking off an overrated Charger squad. The polls are nothing but a distraction for the players as well as a discussion starter for the fans. My point is that I have no earthly idea how these coaches across the state can vote for another team to be number one when they have no idea what the team is about other than their record. Besides that you can throw the polls out once the season starts because 9 times out of 10 a team ranked at the top to start a season will not be there at the end. One last thing, these local sports pages ie. the dirty dozen as well as the dandy dozen out of Memphis rarely have teams ranked where they deserve. They are home town biased so therefore not needed especially since they are so horribly off most of the time. A poll is nothing more than a number than can easily be erased, so why not wait till the dust is settled before putting a number 1 on a highschool team.
  14. This game just goes to show that Covington is not near as good as people gave them credit for. I'm not trying to take anything away from OC, but people here thought this game was a gimmie. The Chargers have a huge problem with holding onto the football, and I've never seen a more fumble prone team in my life. The defense as well as the kicking game are the only facets that seem to show up week in and week out, except for tonight. It will really be interesting to see how Covington bounces back against a title contender in Dyersburgh next week. I really hope for our boys sake they get it together or they are really going to get it handed to them by the Trojans.
  15. Has anyone heard anything more. I haven't heard an announcement about who it is yet.
  16. That is true. I am still not up to date on all of the region swaps. They changed the formats after I got out of school. The way I see it is it should go back to the old way. You had a better quality state tournament then. Now, with the eight team set up you can lose your district, your Wed. game, and still end up as state champs. My feeling is that you win you keep playing, you lose you go home. All this is now is a way to generate more money which is a crock.
  17. Who is/ will be Covington High's new football caoch???????
  18. With USJ, Ripley, Milan, Lexington, Jackson S/S, Dyersburg and Covington all having to battle it out for the region who could argue that. As for the District thats harder to say, but a region is obvious.
  19. Speaking of the night games, how many more people do you think would have showed up for the games had they been at night. There are more baseball fans in the area that would have come had the games not been during work hours. As for the fields, people who know there way around Memphis have no problem getting from one place to the other. I know that does not help the guests, but directors do not think like that. Autozone park would have held the championship ballgames, but they would have had to be scheduled around the Redbirds games. The rumor of that is that someone who has a bit of say-so at the park did not want highschoolers playing on his field. I am from the Memphis area, and I was not happy with the way things went this year either. To be fair to all the TSSAA should use a rotating schedule for the fling so that everyone gets a piece of the pie.
  20. Ok folks, I coached against the PF head coach back when he was still coaching a traveling team from Knoxville. He ran a great ball club then minus the attitudes. No doubt he knows the game, but conduct here is lacking. Had I been the kid that was knocked out, warranted or not, I would be pressing charges if not beating him down. No matter how high the stakes these are still TEENAGE kids who need guidance. The actions here represent the coachs as well as the parents. There is no place for any of that in highschool athletics.
  21. If you could have seen the way DL dominated the first game It looked as if S/S just lost all confidence in themselves I know they are a better team than what they showed yesterday but they just did not play to their potential Also they ran into a pretty dern good pitcher from DL who this man thinks just might end up winning it all if they contiue to swing the bats like they did against S/S
